Why is hard mode always an after thought? Shouldn’t it come FIRST? With all the things that make the game great and come from getting to know the game and mastering its mechanics? Then they can strip it down slightly for normal and even more for easy. Hard mode should be the reward. New objectives or bonus stages, all new enemies, exclusive areas or weapons or abilities, new art assets that reskin levels, new layouts, etc. that makes the game worth replaying. If not and the enemies are just big fucking sponges what’s the point? Life’s too short to replay a game that doesn’t deserve it, I’d rather move on to a new game even if it’s easier overall. A tacked on hard mode is never ever worth it.

One of the few games that does new game + hard mode right is dragon's crown, new enemies and variations of those enemies show up to fuck you over but new items are also available and you carry over everything from your regular run.

yeah there's a binary in modern games where you can only have enjoyable pacing and a powerful player character with the overall game being dumbed down and stupidly generous/soft. if you want a challenge you have to accept being pathetically weak and enemies being chunky damage gluttons, like going into a herd of cattle and trying to kill one by punching with your fists.
as much as gripe about souls popularity(and it has alot of bullshit besides) the basic idea of a developer making a challenging a centerpiece of the game that must be enjoyable and reasonably paced(theoretically) makes it hard not to give them a pass.

I can think of at least two games where easy mode is the actual hard mode.

The game flat out doesn't open up 3 dungeons, which cucks you out of a lot of EXP (you can store it and give it to characters you acquire later on). One of those dungeons has the absolute best wizard in the game.

Critical mode cuts your HP and MP by half and makes enemies hit 4x as hard, but it also gives you a LOT more abilities early on (a second finisher, MP haste, reaction boost, etc), and more importantly 50 extra AP to equip them all. Without accessories, on proud mode (the second hardest difficulty), you'll have 50 AP by level 50.
