Even if the initial reason is it's true (I'll grant that it probably is), they're still gonna do the same shit they did in 2022, 2018, 2014, etc. and slow-roll out consumer RAM as slow as they can to extract as much profit.
Selling more goods at a cheaper price doesn't make rational sense when you're an oligopoly with little to no outside competitors and total control of the supply. And they'll blame AI the entire time they do it so the bad PR falls on business consumers rather than on their shady practices.

there is no such thing as healthy market competition
the invisible hand has its counterpart, the shadowhand, just as the government has its counterpart, the shadow government.
neither are calculated conspiracies or cabals but people acting in their self interest within a larger structure.
Its dangerous to start attributing things causes to coordinated maliciousness rather than general human behavior compounding over many people in many situations making many individual decisions.
The rise of ai like bitcoin mining has affected computer prices. There are always also forces of corporations trying to maximize their profits as well, and their internal calculations and decision making are also done by individuals who have certain incentives based on corporate politics so you cannot even trust a company to ruthlessly try to maximmize profit.

you shouldn't in theory, but cartels don't operate under the same logic. which explains their behavior through standard prisoner's dilemma keeping everyone else in line.
maybe they overdid it, but they'll eventually find a sweetspot price to more comfortably price gouge you on.

Trying to figure out intent aside, that still doesn't change the overall outcome. Or the explanation that memory manufacturers collude with each other, and that's the ultimate reason why prices are so shit long-term.
Fluctuations caused by AI are just that, but price fixing has been decades in the making, whether you think it's because they're evil douchebags or it's because it's in their ultimate rational self interest as long as no one punishes them for it.

It all depends on their profit margin. RAM has been really cheap a decade. I cant see profit margin being much more than 10%. If you triple the price, you go from 10% to 210% profit margin - even if sales drop by 95% you're making a bigger profit than before. And while consumer sales may see such a drop, AI companies are buying the stuff in bulk so the massively increased overhead will more than make up for the loss in consumer sales.

These arent random price hikes, but very carefully calculated operations to maximize profits. Companies arent your friends. If tripling the price leads to even slight increase in total profit, they'll do it.

there's a more straightforward, realistic and simple explanation;

https://cybernews.com/tech/ram-prices-skyrocket-as-ai-demand-grows/

>Samsung and other major manufacturers suspended DDR5 DRAM contract pricing in October, and their supply strategies are expected to become even more stringent in the future.

>Industry insiders expect prices to rise further in the fourth quarter of 2025 and reach new records in the first half of 2026, as manufacturers gradually shift production capacity towards more profitable HBM products for AI computing.

>In just one week DRAM spot prices jumped 30% amid tight supply, according to the latest TrendForce report.

>”Buyers are snapping up quotes immediately, sending spot prices soaring,” the report reads.

>The market is experiencing severe hoarding as buyers purchase the available module supply immediately after receiving quotes. This exacerbates short-term supply issues.

>TrendForce also quotes “zero availability” of NAND products on the market, driving prices for storage and also end products, such as smartphones.

plenty of articles like these when you look it up, and this isn't a polarising political issue either that would incentivise journos to lie like BBC CNN and Fox reporting on latest shitshow in America

It's not like LLMs are just pretrained on all the data and then released like that, lol. That gives it a good foundation for learning generalised attention and prediction patterns but they do then refine it on high quality data

I don't use LLMs for conversation but i have been using GLM 4.6 for code and it's impressive how it holds up to about 32K context length. The biggest issue is that you do need around 130GBs total for a model that's any good... the issues you describe sound more like say a 32B or lower parameter model, which admittedly are all shit
