I truly can not understand anyone loving GTA4 over the majority of the rest of the series. Its so bland with no customizable vehicles, extremely generic weapons and very few world pick ups. It feels like a game thats ashamed it used to be an arcadey game. The intense desire for realism creates very boring missions that often have you doing the exact same thing over and over. Stores are easily the worst in the entire series by a mile. Protag doesnt engage in his own story until half way through the game.
At the end of the day it feels like a full game made out of a tech demo.

There's some good parts of RDR1 and 2 but yeah the VA work in GTA IV is really really good lots of little nuances from multiple different characters and it was also at the point in vidya tech where you can start to see facial mocap acting more and more in some scenes

There's that great bit where Pegorino starts bargaining with Niko to work with Dmitri again which Niko refuses at first and then it escalates to him trying to threaten Niko and Niko just gives him a death stare which causes Pegorino to back off and try appealing to Niko's want for cash instead

All GTA games up to this point were kinda dark and gritty in some way. This was just the pinnacle. RDR was similar. GTA 5 was more light hearted and sitcom-ey, and RDR 2 was this shit attempt at some emotional feelsbad story but they completely fumbled it. Should've stuck to what made them best and made Micah the protagonist in RDR2 instead of Arthur "all I do is complain" Morgan. They turned John into some pussy too.

GTA 4 was the peak of gaming, it's been diminishing returns ever since

Driving round at night with Flashing Lights playing, driving over the toll bridge to Algonquin is fucking kino every single time, never get tired of it. Incredible for a game from 2008, hopefully GTA6 will be as big a tech upgrade compared to the rest of the industry as this was, though I expect actual storywise it'll be at similar levels to GTA5, ie a step down for the series.
