The problem comes from the fact he didn't start the story that strong. They wanted to have both an MC that grows and an MC that was a super special OC who was a combo of musashi and kojiro. The gap is simply not believable. Not in that length of time.
There's also the issue of him being servant level and a COMBINATION of two of Japan's most famous swordsmen. There's no reason he should be struggling if he's already that strong. He's got a servant to help him out and 99.9999% of people even in his day aren't going to be anywhere near servant level.
It's just not a good plot, anon. He COULD have been that strong, he COULD have reasonable explanations for being that level, but he isn't and doesn't.
Him "dedicating himself solely to improving" doesn't matter when he achieves this in a mere few days because before he couldn't handle even vastly weaker demonic beasts.

It was decent, interesting story and characters (if you are into fateslop) and the combat is generally fun, but the boss fights are a massive slog. Also, no playable tardmamo.

It was enjoyable, I thought the boss fights weren't interesting enough to justify their length, or I might've just sucked, I can't remember, it's been awhile since I've played it. However that servant isn't that capable of just punching someone in the face. If they lose a one on one duel with someone, how does that invalidate all the gods that servant killed? The guy that beat them wouldn't have been able to do what that servant acomplished even if they bested them in a duel.

You can't make a fucking direct scalable line of power, we're talking about people and their skills and willpower, not a washing machine's power consumption. People can lose to someone and still be better than the person they lost to.
In Formula 1, Niki Lauda had an infamous rivalry with James Hunt. James Hunt ended up beating Niki Lauda and then retired from the sport. Niki Lauda ended up getting way more driver titles than him after that however and is considered a much better driver than Hunt. It's the best Fate game after the Extras.
There's an identity crisis between trying to decide if it wants to be an action game or a musou, but it's still more than playable. While Nasu and Sakurai may have given them the bones and characters, the real KT team wrote a much better plot than most modern Fate works.

Think of the Shell meters as the real boss healthbars, and you'll have a better time understanding the combat rather than the anons screeching on release they were doing no damage.

I liked it a lot. As a Fate game it does a great job with its story, and as an action game while it's not going to get you calling it GOTY, I think the mechanics do a good job of making it unique and making the Fate concepts relevant to gameplay.

I've played it through three times, 100%ed it, and I want to play it again before the FGO collab hits global server.

Fate doesnt even really qualify as a franchise to me. Theres no rules. Theres no thematic throughline. The characters arent meaningfully based on their mythology, doubly so for “historical” ones. The only "rules" that truly matter are the ones in which hard numbers are either explicit or implied, and those numbers must be fundamentally inviolable. Excalibur's raw output is lower than Ea's. Thus, there has never been a recorded instance of Excalibur defeating Ea. God Had has a cap of twelve lives. It can never have more than this.

"Humans can't defeat Servants" isn't a rule.
"The Holy Grail War takes place every 40 years" isn't a rule. It's just an assumption based on how the leylines work. "40 years" isn't an inviolable number in the same way as God Hand's twelve lives. There is no way to increase God Hand's number of lives, but there are ways to decrease the interim between Holy Grail Wars.
"Seven Servants in a Grail War" isn't an absolute rule. It's a cap placed on the Grails as that is A) the theoretical maximum number of Servants necessary to complete to ritual and B) to prevent unnecessary damage to the leylines. It's also not an inviolable number.

Only absolute physical limitations matter in Fate. There are loopholes and ways to get around some limitations, but the base limitations will always exist.
