That's completely impractical and impossible to sync live. You can make backups for a file you save every 5 minutes, but the game's storage is updated several times per second. For every single player. You can't just keep a live backup of that.

If you had a remote back-up, it would have be sync'd every hour. So now you have the option of paying twice your networking costs and rolling back player progress by an hour to mitigate a crash, or just letting it happen and not lose any progress. I'd rather it just crash.

Is the magic just gone for anyone? I think I've attempted to get back into XIV since EW .1 patch and I've struggled every single time. I don't think it's really any fault of the "game" itself but more the community around it.

Ninja wasn't that bad back then. The issue people were having with Ninja was it being mandatory due to trick attack. Mudras weren't a massive issue since you could still Fuma weave instead of attempting to Raiton due to the physical damage poison still existing. Bahamut's AI was janky as hell but Summoners were still pretty happy given that they spent most of the expansion on the top of the damage meters after they got buffed. Eureka was pretty stable on its new releases. Anemos really got going for most of the playerbase after Pagos released and gave us weekly logs to speed leveling up. Omega wasn't too bad even with the memberberries since the balance was great, we got a fifth fight in Savage, and the fights were interesting for the time. Ultimates were additional content that didn't feel like they were eating a slot that casual content could have existed in since the patch cycle was short enough for casuals not to get bored with their content and they objectively had more stuff coming out for them (extra dungeons and Eureka).

I always said I preferred SB over everything that came after it. SHB messed up a bunch of jobs and as the expansion went on, you could tell they started lowering the amount of effort put into content. Storywise yeah, 5.0 is probably the best XIV has been in a vacuum, but everything immediately falls off a cliff starting in 5.1. The nuance of 3.X having three intertwined plots that all start at 3.1 is something XIV has never managed to redo, or even attempt for that matter. Instead we just get a bunch of filler until JP fanfest where suddenly they can reveal where we are going next expansion.

Meanwhile, ARR and HW were not scared at all to basically point out we were going deeper into Coerthas or Gyr Abania. Othard was a "surprise" but they spent 2.X establishing that region with the refugees so it's not like it came outta nowhere either.
