From what I understand, Deathwatch duty can either be a great honor (you're so good you're tasked with one of the most dangerous, yet important jobs, you're at the forefront of fighting Xenos) or a disgrace (you fucked up real bad, but you can still be useful, so you're stripped out of your association with the Chapter and sent into a meatgrinder to either die with honor or survive and restore your honor). Typically, you wear your Chapter colors proudly in the first case or go with a blank flank pauldron in the other.

I think GW generally will attach an author to a chapter/ legion/ faction and they will then be the go to or main guy to reference and write for them for example the Space Sharks books are mostly written by Robbie MacNiven and I really enjoy his writing, he knows the Carcharodons inside and out and how they should be portrayed.

Entirely depends on the army you want to collect, but if you're talking about primaris space marines then it's very easy to get to 1k/1.5k/2k points with a few hundred dollars.

Mind you, I think it's better to start with Kill Team so that you only have to spend $60-80 and build/paint 10 models that can be the basis for your actual army. Don't jump in with $500 to get dozens of models without actually knowing if you like building and painting them in the first place.

Last she was seen Yvraine has become increasingly unhinged, driving her followers to more dangerous and borderline suicidal quests almost to the point of commiting outright sacrifical rituals in the hope if rousing Ynnead, apparently always failing. Every single space marine dies violently at some point.

Either they're killed in combat, their ship is lost in the warp, their drop pod or thunderhawk is shot down, or they simply die in an accident (absolutely happens).

Most marines never make it to 1 century of service. To become a recognized veteran as a space marine is a true accomplishment, and a non-trivial amount of luck.

The fact that they're willing to kill off named guys is something to be appreciated, not lamented.

There is no retiring as a marine, even for those that end up training new recruits or taking care of the archives in the fortress monastary. They all die horrifically violent deaths eventually, and usually sooner rather than later.

Don't sleep on Dark Eldar either, they're great looking and fun as fuck too. Their models are older (2010ish, with some newer units like Incubi/Archons) but their quality holds up and because they're old, they're actually *cheaper* than new kits.

Dark Eldar Kabalite Warriors are $30-40 per 10 guys but Eldar Guardians are $60 per 10, despite costing the same in game and both having full wargear options included.

A warrior of chaos had to earn it. Becoming a chaos warrior is NEVER an accident.
You can be ANYONE from ANY background, but you MUST walk the Path to Glory to gain the favor of the Chaos gods.

That means that each and every one of them EARNED the right to wear that armor by adventuring around, killing worthy enemies, conquering territory and plundering treasure.

They're 100% /yourdudes/.

Chaos marines on the other hand are still kidnapped and brainwashed children, only now daemons help do it. They may have to fight in trials as kids to earn their transformation, but that's far different than spending your whole life fighting in order to earn it.

Entire game are different campaigns to see who you're going to krump, and it's against ALL factions being stuck in their own problems akin to you playing as the 3rd actor of a campaign, so you couldd drop on a hive city that's a current warzone between SoB's trying to burn to a crisp a bunch of cultists, only for your dumbass git ship to crash and make a huge ass crater so now you're rampaging your way through waves ot screaming battle nuns and screaming spiky humies until your nonsense ends up drawing the attention of a whole Imperial Guard fleet so the final boss is a boss rush against the Guard's finest machinery, with the thing ending on you Joyriding a fucking rigged and looted Exorcist against a Baneblade. Or you directly krump a bunch of Imperial Guard sissies only for a bunch of Tyranids to show up so shit ends up with you, some of your boys (because even a warboss can only spare 3 nobs for the best fights sadly), and an Ogryn that got splattered in Tyranid guts so he looks as Green as an Ork (and as wise as an one too) so he blends in with the Ork crew and you all fight a fucking Tyrant.

Because warriors of chaos are metal album cover badasses.

You start as some regular shithead with delusions of grandeur, and you group up with hundreds/thousands of other overly ambitious idiots hoping to prove yourself to the eldritch gods.

If you live, you ascend to becoming a 7 foot tall armored knight who is still climbing the ladder, always proving yourself stronger or to die trying.

If you survive even that, your equals are whittled down by battle and death leaving your warband smaller in number but stronger in power and resolve. You climb the ranks further to become a chosen, and then an aspiring champion, and then perhaps an exalted champion or a true chaos lord.

But even then, you aren't finished. Your ultimate goal is to ascend to immortality as a daemon prince and become one with your patron god, forever playing in their great game.

To pursue this path means you only have three outcomes: Ascension to daemonhood, death in battle, or cursed to become a mindless chaos spawn. There are no alternatives, and there is no redemption. You must prioritize greed for power over absolutely EVERYTHING else, but the potential reward is literal immortality.

Genuinely no, the Mantis Warriors got slaughtered by the Space Sharks, it's one of the most decisive marine defeats in the lore.

Other rebelling chapters like the Executioners managed to defend themselves well enough to walk out of the Badab war as functional chapters. The Mantis Warriors were on the verge of extinction until Cawl saved them with reinforcements.

Lots of people engage in the hobby and not the lore. I think that goes unmentioned a lot, honestly. I had a coworker that was super into 40k. Knew the crunch well and had a very well painted nids army. He used to use free time at work shaping model foam to make his own terrain.
He barely knew one space marine chapter from another if they weren't a TT faction and he didn't know who nearly any of the primarchs were. He said something along the lines of
