It's so fucking bizarre. You can tell the game is trying to be earnest but the writing just can't get there. And the game's so presentation is so cheap. The lighting is shit, the environments are nothing, all the character models feel like paper dolls, most of the dialogue (which isn't good to begin with) is delivered in between levels in text boxes.

06 is a bad game that makes no sense and doesn't write its characters well most of the time, but when Shadow busts out that "If the world chooses to become my enemy, I will fight like I always have." line, the animation and the music and the storytelling, not just of that game, but going all the way back to Heroes, makes it feel earned and it feels like a great moment for the character. It feels like Shadow has arrived at his conclusion as a character in a real way. Compare that to like, the triple boost scene from Forces or the scene where Sonic is making his big friendship speech to Infinite, it's night and day.

It's so weird that they spent so long making Forces and it still looked and felt and played like a budget game that took 18 months to develop at the end.

Colors and Lost World both take place not on Earth (Eggman's park and the Lost Hex, respectively) with a ticking time bomb element present (Eggman's Mind Control Beam; the hijacked Extractor draining the world) so Sonic and Tails don't necessarily have time to go grab the Chaos Emeralds. None of that is true in Forces: it's all on Earth and there's a time lapse lasting months.

Mimic was genuinely the worst character in the series, but I don't think his concept was even that great to begin with. His entire ethos is incredibly limited when he can't actually kill anyone (or even maim them) and Whisper would still be Whisper, with or without him. He really should have been written out in Whisper & Tangle, Bad Guys at the most. Unlike someone like Starline, he really can't have permanent change or meaning to the cast, he really could only just be eliminated from the equation. And even in regards to his backstory, it doesn't quite match up to the idea of being a survivor of a WORLD WAR started by the same man that has far more info on him than any person he stuck by.

I do not like Mimic and I struggle to think how he could have ever worked beyond W&S. Some of it is on Whisper herself not being a particularly proactive or impactful character, but the dude just sucked on all angles.

To be fair, they did come up with a coherent explanation for why Sonic and Rookie were ultimately able to beat Infinite: Infinite exerted a lot of power summoning the "virtual" sun to incinerate the Resistance and so he was weakened when they tag-teamed him.
...Which the game then immediately undercut by having Sonic, Smol Sonic and Rookie take down a true Phantom Ruby-powered, explicitly-more-powerful-than-Infinite Death Egg Robot with no such conceit made. :V

I actually warmed up immensely to Sage in CrossWorld's previews and her dialogue in it. Making it clear that she's ALL IN on Team Eggman and making it seem more like it is out of genuine respect and a need for him to succeed over just "we are family" sold me on wanting to see more of her. Especially with the "sibling rivalry" between her and Metal Sonic. You can easily her jumping in a boss fight to jack up Eggman's mech or screw over Team Sonic.

Sage being the "Competent, Undyingly Loyal Minion" to Metal's "Starscream-in-Waiting" and Orbot/Cubot's "Joke Character" rounds out Eggman's gang well. She just needs to show up and do some real damage to things.

Because SEGA themselves constantly divide this franchise for no good reason. The "Classic/Modern" split is a good example, Fang and Trip are unlikely to be in CrossWorlds because they are in the "Classic Timeline".

I think the most clear example on a mechanic level is how we only just got the Spin Dash in a 3D Sonic back with Frontiers, and as a post-launch update unlockable for 100% completion. SEGA keeps slashing Sonic up to find out what works and what people want from the franchise, neglecting to consider the whole product and how it comes together. This comes down to even arbitrarily dividing characters and how "valid" their potential appearance would be. This is why the IDW and Archie fags are at war, despite them owning both sets of characters. We just want consistency from this series instead of watching it bend over backwards trying to appeal to EVERYONE.

Honestly the "plausible deniability" probably works the best for W&S's relationship.
