putting this out there, many of the games officially sold for the playdate are really not that great. Although no one is making the big bucks from playdate games, the market isn't saturated so if your game is half decent you will actually have people see and buy your game. The catch is the average game price is around 5 bucks

Thinking about those saving systems.
I have a bunch of unique interactions and the game should remember all of that between scenes. Now I have to write something convoluted that remembers if things were interacted with successfully or not, keep an end state for a bunch of items and remember to rewrite everything to not repeat anything that was already done.
Too much for a shitpost

Nah, just something from one of my artists. It is for the project, but "hey look, some paragraphs" isn't the best visuals.
I'm looking forward to seeing that Harpy, once it's ready. Is the plan for them to really fly or are they just going to be 'offset from the ground', as it were?
>>725588453
Ah I only say that because it looks a little more 'mid game'. If you've played Mario 64, you can sorta tell how dangerous an area is by the number of safe spaces to stand. Bob-Bomb battlefield doesn't have any falls that kill you in one hit, for example. Lethal Lavaland is 50% fire that hurts you, and Tick Tock Clock is all platforming and narrow walkways.

They fly for real! They do it in a basic way, and would love to expand it with actual 3D A* pathfinding. But for now, the current logic is fine

Sometimes I wish I could when certain things are difficult. But then I manage to power through. It'd be fun working with someone but making my own singular vision is also fun.

My most recent "I wish someone else would do this part" had to do with writing, I had some ideas of events I want to occur but linking them up had its difficulties. Putting pen to paper (metaphorically) is difficult for me. But then there was a breakthrough; what if character x was related to character y? It solved the problems and added a new element to character x that made complete sense and rounded out who they were. I'm happy with where it ended up. If someone else wrote their own solution, would I have been content with it?

Now that our men and women have been shown the proper respect they deserve for defending the free nation, it is time to continue our regularly scheduled posting.
Here's something neat: certain Gremlings now grow a pair of testicles and will actually attack the player. At the moment I am thinking of just having only Gremling Majors (Pot Gremlings with completely fireproof armor that throw their spears at you instead of to the side) turn into these devious monsters, but I began to think: what if, by some minuscule chance, regular Pot Gremlings do the same as well?

Yeah but her artstyle doesn't match the rest of the game, and she's just floating there. You have that big, almost empty square at the right corner that says "Shop" and has 3 icons. Couldn't you fit her there? Maybe turn that into her actual shop, kinda like pic-rel

My 2 plans
1. I have this concept of "ephemeral realms" where a random or scheduled server instance spins up, and is shown in the public server listing for a time period. It might be a dungeon for raiding, or a full map where some players might log in to do anything else like PvP or grind skills during that window of the realm being up. This would all level your yggengine.com "persona" which will be a global character of sorts
2. Its your forum avatar, and interacting on the forum will also yield some xp to the persona
Other than that individual server spawns people have, people will have their individual character stats for those. The idea will be we will have cosmetics recognized between servers.

Turns out Windows 10 had a service where you could buy 3D printed models you design on the computer so I had this abomination turned into a cool statue; the first time it arrived, the arms were broken off the pauldrons so I requested a replacement; the same thing happened the second time so I decided not to ask again because it just meant my model was shit (thank God for Krazy glue, though). While that's very cool I noticed that in your previous webm you barely hit anyone until you land and the enemies start pilling up together. Anon I've been seeing your game for a while and it looks super cool, but lots of 3d movement + slow bullets is a recipe for frustration since you are bound to miss most shoots and the power fantasy gets lost. Even Descent had the courtesy of having one hitscan weapon and that game wasn't as fast as yours. I'd say at least give hitscan a go as a test. You could still try and replicate the portal stuff with hitscans, maybe not painting the bullets on screen, but their traces? Oh and sorry for the long rambling, I love this game design shit.

You won't because it doesn't happen anymore. Valve changed the algorithm in 2019 and now every new release flops unless you quite literally sell a hundred thousand copies in its first week, only then do you get any kind of promotion by Steam.
Unless you already have an established audience by the time you start, like a Youtube channel or a discord server that's filled with retards who'll buy your game on first notice, AND have connections to streamers and youtubers day one to shill your game on release (which you are not, let's be real), you're shit out of luck.
>But muh nextfest!
It only helps a little. It may get some eyes on your game but it's not a guaranteed success. It's all fucked.

Oh, and to top it all off - the average retarded steamie considers a game that sold 200 THOUSAND copies and made 3 million dollars in revenue an "obscure hidden gem". So there's also that working against you.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. I remember hearing about twine/sugarcube being a huge pain in the butt to deal with to the point that people said to not even bother, but I'm not really sure if they found something better to use. Maybe Ren'py? Not sure when you tried out doing it yourself, but the way AI is now you can get away with a lot with it helping you out, though it'd have to be a final resort since it still requires fiddling around with it, and you'd have to do research into what's better to use than twine.
I do think that you'll be able to find someone though, your chances go up exponentially if you provide proof that you've been working on it and essentially have proof-of-concept. Make mock-ups and stuff like that while you work on it to share around when you look for a coder. Really, the hardest thing will be getting them to stay, people are really flaky.

There are a bunch of text adventure engines with different approaches, limits, and scripting capabilities. If declaring twine variables is too much "code" for you then you won't find anything easier. You will have to properly team up with a programmer-designer fellow, because the real pain starts when managing variant dialogue and ensuring coherent order of progression. CoC relies a fuckton of text substitutions, which is plain if/then/else logic, but anything bigger than a 20 minute CYOA (much less an "actual game") will quickly spaghetti out of control.

How much information is too much information in combat? And how do you determine when you’re making decisions in that area designed to massage your own ego rather than helping the game (because you worked hard to design something, you want all of its complexity to be somehow reflected to the player, so they can appreciate how cool and intricate it is)?

I’ve got this power-and-poise system where an attack’s ability to stagger/hitstun an enemy is contingent upon the attack’s inherent power number and also the enemy’s poise number. But the enemy’s poise number is a dynamic variable that changes based on their state (idle, in windup frames, how long they’ve been in a juggle, whether they have arrows stuck in them, etc). And the power associated with an attack also changes (the more frequently it’s used, the less power it has).

I was thinking of adding a small bar below the enemy’s health bar that showed their current poise level, and a little dash would appear on it whenever the enemy was hit to indicate the power of the current attack relative to the enemy’s poise. It would be a very compact and concise way of conveying a lot of gameplay relevant information. But then I started to wonder: am I just drawing the hitboxes here? Does this kind of system spoil the magic? When are you revealing too much to the player? When is it better to just let them deal with the ignorance and maybe make sub-optimal decisions?

I think the most important thing is retard-proofing the system. No matter how intelligently you design a system, if a retard can't understand it in a few seconds they're gonna say it sucks.

Think Mortal Kombat. You can go into the moves list and see the exact frame data for every single attack, practice frame perfect combos, and study the counter-pick meta... Or you can spam the same special move until you win.

What I'm saying is: let players who want to dig deeper into the mechanics see everything, but don't scare off retards by showing an overwhelming amount of information and expect them to follow it

Anything else is because of the open nazi stuff he posted on twitter. I've literally never seen anyone give a shit that he used /v/

the part that takes a lot is the content creation and balancing but im not focused on that at all. it's just systems design but ill end up doing some content and balancing eventually and use this version for free to market the one i actually put more into.

the systems design is pretty straightforward, daggerfall unity existing helped a lot to begin with

Players are shit. If there's any information, they want a spreadsheet of all that information, however they don't want to read anything.

You could probably keep it all behind the scenes and just say at the start of the game 'an enemy's poise will change based on their action or if theyre weakened'

>What I'm saying is: let players who want to dig deeper into the mechanics see everything, but don't scare off retards by showing an overwhelming amount of information and expect them to follow it
I think my fear is that when you're an unknown indie game, there's a tendency to assume that there ISN'T technical depth. There isn't going to automatically be a wiki breaking down every single system 2 days after release for people to dissect. I think a lot about a game like Transformers Devastation, where it had all these really subtle and interesting technical nuances that made the combat deep and fun, but the action game community took 15 minutes of it a face value and went
>shovelware, no tech, safe to ignore

Devil May Cry can get away with burying the lead, technically speaking, because its reputation for complexity will all but ensure SOMEONE is digging into the frame data to find all the silly shit. But how can an unknown, unproven developer/title expect that anyone will take its own technical complexity for granted?

Which I think is part of the reason I want to have these little UI elements that convey this information, because it's a wordless, not-25-minutes-of-tutorial way of showing the player "hey, there's something subtle worth paying attention to here". But I also worry that video games are about imperfect information, if I tell you everything then gameplay can sort of be cooked down to "do you want to perform the pbviously correct action? If yes, then deal damage. If else, then take damage". Because that's all the gameplay actually is, the challenge is in the assessment.

Same way Portal did it.
You make 3/4 of the game an hidden tutorial, and force the player to use all the cool tech one by one in relatively foolproof setups.

I am at least satisfied that I can explain the concept in about 3 short sentences if I need to just tutorialize it

>Whether an attack will stun the enemy depends on what the enemy is doing
>An attack will be less able to stun enemies if used too often
>The longer an enemy has been stunned, the harder it will be for the next attack to keep it stunned.

Maybe it's the sort of thing that makes sense as an optional UI element for a training mode. I kind of wanted to include various training-mode-type UI elements as postgame "upgrades" you could unlock.

I'm currently remaking my entire first level in Trenchbroom as it's exactly what I need and it has an add-in for an easy pipe-line into Godot. Just started the other day. I never used Trenchbroom before, it's really neat once you get the hang of it. The textures are only used in Trenchbroom. When I get it into Godot I have shaders that replace each of the textures in specific ways (changing UVs, etc.). So, this is probably going to be what I'm doing for the next week.

I spoke with many idea guys and they legit have no idea of anything.
>go to "meet up with local game devs" meeting
>schedule to meet up with certain devs
>can personally code, sketch art, do UI or write
>meeting goes awry, none of them show up
>get thrown into another group with "idea guys"
>they all want me to do their project
>decide to humor them and start asking questions

(all my dialogues are "")

Idea guy #1:
>oh it's a post apocalyptic survival game
>"does it play like other games? any examples?"
>... it's a survival game, you know, crafting and stuff
>"there are a few variants of it, which one? Ark?"
>no no, too difficult
>"ok... so what would be better? Animal crossing?"
>that's not a survival game!
>"what's the lore? why is it post-apocalyptic? does it matter?"
>oh it matters a lot! like a big nuke went off and it's post apocalyptic and the fairies are back and fighting humans
>"oh fairies?? what about zombies?"
>no, that doesn't make any sense!

Conversation went on and he basically saw an ad for a game and wanted to make the game but had no idea what it was about.

Idea guy #2:
>I want to make a souls-like with a female protagonist like wonder woman
>"Oh, what's the plot? what are we doing? why a female protagonist"
>he blank stares me
>it has to be wonderwoman
>he splurges on how the wonder woman movie was so good and she was so cool and he needs to make a game about it
>visibly erect
>"can it be a generic person? I don't think we can easily get the rights to-"
>no, only wonder woman

Idea girl #3:
>I want to write a romance
>"ok, so how would we do this? 3d walking sim? 2d top down like pokemon? VN?"
>oh, I don't know, I just want to do the writing, which is a lot, you know!
>"ok, tell me about the characters"
>has no characters or anything prepared at all
>insists she is a good writer and I just don't get it

These people should write books or something. They have no understanding or even concept of what games are.

damn that sucks. The implementation I have for screenshake is quite standard, the usual slight camera rotation. I think I got it from some GDC talk but that was a long time ago now. In any case, you can disable screenshake (or increase it!) so I hope you still have a good time when you get to play it
>>725621553
there's a strong attack, higher damage and is able to slam weaker enemies into the ground, disabling them for a few moments. It's also useful for other stuff like exposing weakpoints or, in the case of the armored goblins, breaking the armor in just one hit

Today I finally got letterboxing and stretching working after wanting to do so for months. It should be simple but I'm retardo and couldn't really figure out anything in this engine that wasn't just rendering everything to a texture and doing things with it which doesn't really work with my setup.
Right now I just render at an internal 4:3 with the parts I don't want and then letterbox and stretch the output from the center as needed. Pretty dumb but... whatever.
This is basically the final piece of the puzzle for making things look more NES-like. Usually people don't actually play those games in true pixel perfect form. Personally I prefer NTSC style which is a good middle ground, literal 4:3 looks way too stretched for my liking. I was going to actually make the game proper 4:3 but that means more work and it's more authentic this way anyway.

Rotation about the character is a bad way of implementing screen shake. Best practice is to positionally offset the camera up-down and left-right, if you do any rotation at all, make sure it’s in conjunction with that, VERY subtle, and centered on the camera itself (so the camera “rotates in place” rather than orbiting the player as yours seems to). The issue is your screenshake shakes the environment more than the player, but it’s the player that we’re supposed to perceive as bearing the brunt of the impact. It makes the screenshake seem to only affect our periphery which is very jarring.
