Thief 1 and 2, and System Shock 2 are the only games to use the Dark Engine which is a shame because I like it a lot.

Hell yeah, the Thief games are still some of the best stealth games ever made. It's all about timing and resource management, memorizing locales and overcoming obstacles. The combat isn't great, I'll admit that, but the atmosphere is fantastic!
The lore, the characters, Stephen Russell got his feet wet voicing Garret and Father Karras, now he's a regular in Bethesda games, one of the only good things in those terrible games.
If you like video games, Thief 1, 2, and Deadly Shadows are must plays.
