It's still popular, things like DotA and League of Legends are some of the most popular games ever made

The rts that was popular was playing vs the AI.
Dota is a "simplified" WC3 (or used to).
Rts pvp games are clunky messes that are impossible to get into and developers refuse to make pve single player games
