That's fair, but still a new PC should either cost $40 000 USD and play state of the art shit or it shouldn't exist. That's the only appeal of the PC, it's more expensive, sure, but it's a billion times better. What is the appeal of a capsulated shitbox that may or may not cost less just because it has a Steam sticker on it? It's quintessentially a worse PC, it has nothing going for it and it's a useless product in today's time. If this was done by anyone other than Steam nobody would even give it the time of day. PCs should not compete with consoles in that regard. Everyone loves to bitch and moan at consolefags when they do this cult shit but I've come to find out Steamies are literally exactly the same, they just didn't have the avenue to reveal their true colors until today. it's a product for casuals to get them to swap to pc gaming. then they can upgrade to a big boy pc later on if they like it. pc owners aren't the target market, it's designed to get people to become pc owners by offering a cheap alternative that developers will most likely optimize games for(like how sony made sure all their games ran on the deck)

Honestly it seems like a great little machine but it all depends on the price point, if they pull a steam deck and price it super competitively its a strong move from valve

This puts Sony in an awkward position, not only does Valve get Sony games on Steam and their own hardware, while Valve port nothing of their own games to PS, and now they are moving against Sony on the hardware front as well. Sony needs to wisen up and leave PC ports, or lock everything of it down to only buying from a PS storefront on PC. It makes no sense to have business dealings with a clear rival, which Valve is to them, just like Nintendo understands, Valve is no lesser rival to Nintendo and Sony than they are against each other. So Sony releasing games on Steam makes about as much sense as releasing their games on the Nintendo eshop. Not only is Nintendo taking over the console industry and NS2 has the rocket start but Steam could possibly start eating up PS sales as well, even though I think this looks like a shit buy just like steam deck was/is. I could easily see casuals buying it because they don't know any better

Current console competition uses AMD RDNA2 SoCs.
The PS5 Pro one has some RDNA3 features and RDNA4 raytracing cores awkwardly and inefficiently stapled onto the side of what is essentially still RDNA2.

Steam's new little box (Oh god; I'm going to have to start calling this the "Gabecube" aren't I?) is literally the most graphically advanced living room console entering the market now. They only shat the bed on the actual horse power backing the architecture. Even the base PS5 has 36 CUs - the Pro has 60. Steam's stepping forward with a not-very-competitive 28 CUs in their machine. The RDNA3 architecture vs the RDNA2 one is not going to close that gap.

This is so fucking dumb. I say this as someone who loves my Deck.

It's obviously designed to target console players, and not PC enthusiasts, because PC enthusiasts can build something better for cheaper.

I doubt console players will embrace this as they love competitive multiplayer games, and due to this running Steam OS, those are not going to be available.

Console players also don't like to tinker, so i doubt they will want to bother dual booting windows. Also, many of them fucking hate windows, and for good reason.

Good news is, we may be able to get these used for dirt cheap in a couple years.

Unless Steam is about to drop Half Life 3 and Portal 3 as Steam exclusives, these really have no appeal to a normie. Also, most gamers these days havent even played Half Life or Portal so even if they did, it might not move the needle

They definitely need to iron out something with the steam updates. I've used my Deck as a daily driver, I'd leave it plugged into a dock and play at my desk when I'd be home, and I noticed if I apply updates while it's on a dock and the screen is turned off then when I use it as a handheld again the touchscreen occasionally stops working until the next update.

For the Steam Frame.

The Steam Machine runs on a custom AMD Zen4 CPU.
It's basically a Ryzen 7000 series CPU made suitable for a SoC.

Quite possibly, because it's designed as a SoC together with its GPU counterpart, it may be able to pull off the same unified memory trick Sony used in the PlayStation architecture. Which means you get basically non-existent bus-transfer from main RAM to GPU for uploading meshes, textures, etc.

Basically, this might actually fix the one thing that gimps most naive PS5->PC ports and was one of the reasons MS came up with DirectStorage as a sort of slapdash fix: the data-transfer rate over PCIE to/from the GPU.

You have to also look at the RAM in a different way than normal, however; Windows will just eat the fuck up out of your RAM like a hog to run telemetry and extra processes most users will likely never even know exist, while Linux and the SteamOS setup inherently has more advantages and overall performance on many games by default because it gets to draw from its components with a lot less overhang. There's a reason why something like Bazzite is pretty much still dominating the PC handheld space and routinely used as a point of comparison against Windows 11 machines, even swapped onto them for extra demonstration.

16GB of RAM is basically fine by most metrics since it doesn't NEED the excess.

You're forgetting that this is a SoC housing both CPU and GPU.
AMD has experience designing those with unified memory architecture.

Basically, the fact that it only has 8 GB dedicated VRAM is of no concern when transfer times from main RAM to VRAM are basically non-existent because you can temporarily page part of the VRAM as main RAM for direct zero-latency read/write access.

The PS3 through PS5 architectures do the same thing.
And it's the lack of this tech in general desktop PCs (and the patchy DirectStorage bandaid not cutting it) that causes most of the problems with stutter and load times on the PC platform as well as the need for exorbitant amounts of VRAM because EVERYTHING has to be preloaded and crammed in there to avoid loading stutter midway through.

Windows hasn't had a release in 25 years. NT, which the marketing department labels "Windows" even though it has more in common with VMS, has always used a compatibility layer for so-called "legacy" win32 software. None of Microsoft's attempts to have a "modern" replacement of win32 have ever caught on.

NT used to have other compatibility subsystems, but they all died out too. If you're confusing the WM with the OS you at least used to be able to replace the default interface with more minimal UIs like blackbox. I'm not sure that sort of customization of NT is possible anymore without Microsoft's sign off. If it was I'd imagine the handheld NT machines would be trying it.

This is another stepping stone away from windows. If this plays out in our favor, those companies will have no choice than to bend the knee on SteamOS support. Next best case scenario after Steam Box makes waves, is official driver support from GPU/CPU manufacturers for SteamOS linux flavor. Valve is no doubt working on a full-fledged OS beyond their hardware. Notice that this is coming out shortly after Win10 EOL. Discord roasties were already jumping on steamdeck as a budget PC, if this is affordable, normies will absolutely jump on board.
