An explanation for the gen alpha anons: in the ancient times like 15 years ago when the Steam Controller game out it sucked dick but vavledrones are a cult and they famously harassed and threatened every podcast, youtuber and early streamer that dared to call a bad product bad and generated a reputation that steam fans are all schizomaxxers.

I doubt that. Valve doesn't really need to make profit on this since they have Steam. They could price it at the cost of parts which would probably be like 60 max. For reference DS4 cost like 20 bucks to produce so I doubt this is more than 3 times expensive.

Gaben and Valve don't really do low or negative margin products. We're talking about a company that not only downsized but completely killed their wildly successful Dota 2 Battle Passes citing that their hundreds of millions in profit were nothing compared to what they earn through Steam daily. Even when the Deck first came out, Gabe was grumbling about its price point being too low.

It's so you don't need to have gyro on all the time and have the camera move if you change position or something. Similar to the capacitive joysticks on the Deck, but arguably better since now the gyro won't be active unless you explicitly want it to and you can just use the stick without gyro. Also, you don't have to use it that way. You can make anything you want activate the gyro with Steam Input, or make the grip detection do something else like change control mapping layers.

>I can't wrap my head around the capacitive touch based gryo activation
the same thing was in the settings for the original steam controller. basically
>have finger on thumbstick or touchpad (depending on how you set it up)
>gyro aiming turns on
>do broad aiming with stick and fine correction with gyro
>take finger off stick
>gyro turns off so you don't do random misinputs when not trying to move the controller

>Even when the Deck first came out, Gabe was grumbling about its price point being too low.
From what I remember he said "getting it to this price point was painful" or something to that effect. Means they got it to a low margin price point.
Also, I really don't see this costing significantly more than 50ish bucks to make. As I said, DS4 was 20 bucks and I don't see this costing more than 3 times as much to make at the absolute maximum. They could sell it for 70ish bucks and still make some decent profit.
