Ive lived in japan and said this a million times. In the west, the default unit of humanity is the individual. We love stories about like five skateboarders preventing a mall that would serve thousands from being built because the developers were bad to individuals. In asia, the default unit of humanity is larger. In japan, its the community. Western civilization serves individuals, japanese civilization serves communities. That means individuals sacrificing their life, happiness, and dreams to serve a community is expected and considered ideal. In japan, if all the money in a town dried up, and ive seen this, families start to “go without”, then small businesses, then everyone leaves, then houses start to collapse, and the train station remains spotless and serviced. Everyone in japan can be miserable at once and as long as the streets are clean and generally safe and there are no public scandals people will just keep on keeping on and regard things as fine.

Guy youre replying to and yeah I agree. Its just not compatible with my way of navigating life. I find it fascinating but never truly clicked with it in my time there. Its the source of immense individual suffering. Of course, its also a key reason why Japan is so amazing to visit. They suffer and sacrifice to make one of the biggest cities in the world also one of the safest and cleanest and best developed… and then westerners can come in and reap the benefits of such places with no payment into the system. The japanese political system, regardless of what western sources tell you, is generally happy and optimistic despite all measures of individual success and happiness being in freefall. Its just a doomed but wonderful society. Visit if you can, wife up a japanese lady, theyre worth the hype, but for the love of god dont raise kids there.
