GK and an offensive MF feel like the best combo to me, especially if you utilize a formation that puts that MF up with the FWs. tension is mostly just gained from focus battles, and spent on special moves
the blue bar is for hyper moves (turning into demons, summoning stands and shit)
elements are mostly just for basic RPS and give +/- multiplier on interactions.

but then focus battles themselves, which seems pretty simple, are mostly just vibes based. there's no way in the short time window to calculate them accurately, the mechanics seem inconsistent, and it often just feels like a coinflip.

reading the guidebook in game and playing a bunch of the other modes like chronicle will teach you more than the main story, in much less time.

lots of ways, that's the sport really. you could blast right through the defender in your way with a focus battle to make his own shot (obviously the defence activating Zone counters that, which is why they do it), or stretch out wide to a winger who runs in deep, and cut back a cross into the area (not a forward pass, so no offside).

reading the situation once put into Zone mode is a skill that will come with time. like if you are on the wing and don't have a defender immediately running into you, you have an absolute age to just watch the players move in slow motion, and quite often your forwards will break a few yards away from their markers. which is enough to send a pass or shot chain into them for an open volley.

you can even pass backwards to break out of Zone, and if the defence already started trying to set up walls and running out of position, you can switch your point of attack to a now open area.
