it's gotta be reasonably affordable, ram is stupid fuck ass expensive now and lesser binned rx7600 chips (which is essentially what their semi-custom GPU is) do a reasonable job.

if they chucked a 9070 in this thing you'd be complaining that it's $1000+

That's not how it works you fucking moron.

Valve can't sell this at a loss because they don't have anything else in their portfolio to offload these initial losses while waiting to gain market share. They literally only have Steam, which in of itself is just a service.

They are not a multimedia giant like Sony.
They are not a trillion-dollar value conglomerate like Microsoft.
They are not legacy IP merchandise holder like Nintendo.

Valve is just Steam, and a couple of games they published years ago.
>but most of Sony/Xbox games are on Steam
Which they pay these publishers their share. Their leverage is the fact the majority of players prefer their service, but not on profit. Sony Playstation still profits on their own store in their own console that still sells in the multi-millions.

And how much does Sony gain on every 3rd Party Game sold on their own store? How much do they gain on every MTX on their store? How much do they gain for every 2K Bundle, FIFA Bundle, COD Bundle, Fortnite Bundle, GTA Bundle etc. and its accompanying MTX?

Steam getting 30% on every game on their store isn't even an exclusive deal to them only, it's an industry standard. And you think that's enough leverage to sell their consoles at a loss to compete against PS5? lmao

It's a binned 7600m.
Look up the cost of a laptop with a 7600m, 6 or 8 core AMD zen chip and 16GB of RAM.
Then remove the OEM's 23% margin.
Then remove $100 for the screen, KB, and trackpad.
Then consider Valve does NOT get the volume discounts these OEMs get.

If they sell at cost, its like $400.

One big reason this is bad specifically is that only having 8GB of VRAM means it's going to be worse in some contexts than a PS5, which can often use more. It's okay to release a roughly PS5-level console on a more efficient modern architecture but when it starts comparing significantly disfavourably to that it's a problem

The other issue is that people will buy this and not know why the textures aren't loading or why there's huge stutters in games

That's literally it though.

Valve is just Steam.
Do they publish games? Not anymore, nor in the capacity that matters right now.

Do they own IPs? They've been coasting on Counter Strike and DOTA2 for the longest time. Deadlock doesn't even technically exist on paper as it is.

When was the last time Valve as a brand been a powerhouse in the industry? Is it the 5 million hardware selling (to date) Steam Deck?

>PC gaming market goes through Steam
That's not enough leverage to sell the Steam Machine at a loss. They share in these profits and they can't even push the envelope for a percentage share in their favor that doesn't exceed the industry standard. If Steam as a service is market-disruptive as you make it sound then the first Steam Machine wouldn't have fucking FLOPPED.

A PS5 or Xbox's unified memory is GDDR6 - not DDR4 or DDR5 DIMMs like what slots in to your desktops motherboard.
GDDR is the memory that is used for VRAM - it is MUCH faster and lower latency.
16GB DDR5 + 8GB of GDDR6 is not necessarily superior to consoles that can allocate up to 12GB of it's unified memory to act as "VRAM".

It *is* pretty weird how "wants to play RPGMaker junk" as opposed to "wants to play Nintendo stuff" makes a "completely different market" now that I think about it. Sure, the form factor is wack, but PSP was sold entirely on the back of piracy, and deck seems to quietly chug along. Is the niche that actually bothers with "portable but like pc" too small? >That's not enough leverage to sell the Steam Machine at a loss
i am again going to remind you that the VAST MAJORITY of the PC gaming market gives 30% of the profit to valve.
almost every AAA, almost every indie, and almost everything inbetween. and the vast majority of that is only available on steam.
if you think valve doesnt earn enough money to fund the development and sale of a console at a loss then im just not sure what to tell you.
>the first Steam Machine
it was a completely different market back in 2015, a device like that really didnt have a place.
but with consoles shitting the bed and a market for portable gaming devices there's actually room for the steam machine to sell well.

of course im sure none of this matters because you're just a consolewar fag.

Again, not exclusive to Steam.

Everything you mentioned, other console platform storefronts does just as much, if not more.

Case in point, Final Fantasy 16 sold OVER 3 MILLION IN A SINGLE WEEK for Playstation 5 and I'm sure Sony is happy with their pocketed share. Over at Steam though? Oof. But I'm sure that's enough leverage right?

the point is that most of them are

it adds up, valve currently sits around 200K items between games, DLC, and software thats not free.
>I'm sure Steam pocketed HUGE profits of 30% of every $20 Silksong purchase lol
reports are 4.2 million sales on steam (6 million in total)
which gives steam 25 million from silksong alone.
keep in mind that this is just one indie game.
almost every single AAA gets sold on steam, its not a negligible amount of money
i'd also like to point out in game purchases, 30% of the profit from those go to steam as well, whales are a massive source of income on their own.
then every sale on the community market gives valve 10% of the cash. combined with the CS2 market even after the gold item crash that alone is a fuck huge source of income.
>[everything in between] not exclusive to Steam.
the point is, again, that the vast majority of it is exclusive to steam.

and finally i'd like to point out that valve has a record of making niche hardware products that rarely sell well. a bit of a loss from a console doesnt mean much to them.
