Unfortunately Valve has sort of historically fucking fumbled it with Source 2 games with any sort of development tools by making them windows only and/or getting kicked in the nads because of the google holocaust and people not actually having people to share shit with.

It's a good game, followed by another good game that also had good tech. The reason so many people talk about it is due to the same reason people lose their minds over FF7. As gaming has moved more and more mainstream the overall community has become.... well, like sheep. People hear about this wonderful game that those who came before them loved so they parrot that without ever having played said game, this builds into a hype wash cycle that feeds into itself.

At this point I don't want more half life. I want a spiritual successor to it.

The actual half life story wrote itself into a corner in so many ways, arguable even with half life 2. I want a 90s military game set in a massive lab of sorts with various aliens running around. Make a brand new setting that's a shameless rip off of half life 1 but centered around modern controls and game mechanics.

Even if HL3 does happen, I'm not sure what they were doing with the Alyx ending. Did they just go back on Eli dying because they thought they could write a better story that way and regret killing him? Unless they address it as some AU and HL3 opens that can of worms, I feel like it's gonna confuse the fuck out of a lot of people who never played Alyx, which is probably the majority given VR.

Half Life was one of the best games ever at the time, like Halo for PCfags, it took over everything for years. Except because PC it had a fuckton of mods both SP and MP and its dominance was even stronger. It was staggering the kind of value you got from a single game purchase. That one game indirectly spawned steam, TF2 and CS.
It was so big that there was no way HL2 could compare, but somehow their sequel still blew everyone away. It didn't become as absurd as HL1 because the scene was bigger then, but it was still a huge deal. Living up to that level of hype is very rare.

I did that recently. Played 2 as a kid it was pretty alright but didn't finish it, played 1 and didn't see any appeal. Earlier this year I played through all of 1+Blue Shift+Opposing Forces as well as all of 2. Liked them way better than I did in high school. The guns don't feel great still but they're still fun, solid games.

The issue with the Steam Machine isn't Linux.
It's that there's no market gap for it.
PC gamers will get a desktop with better specs and play whatever they want and Console gamers will get a console because brand to play the big blockbuster AAA slopfests.

The only way to attract consolefags to something like the Stean Machine is by marketing heavily with, ironically, exclusives, like Half Life 3.
