SMT V has these in its dungeons. You can even see on the map that there's nothing there because treasure is marked. It's like they were trying to emulate older SMT design but forgot that they removed random encounters so these little detours do nothing. That was mostly just a 7th gen shooter thing. Usually games put contextualised boundaries in place. The only exception is in open world games where they’ll put an invisible wall at the map boundaries because the game has to end somewhere.

DS2 has a door before King's Passage with a round top in front of a short corridor that is shaped just like that door. Due to its design it should only open towards you but instead you open it just like every other one and the top half simply clips into the walls.

One is immersion breaking and the other isn’t. The latter is the more popular solution because its more stylised and keeps you in the game.

I think the only solution more elegant than that is games that are broken up into areas with room transitions, but that isn’t suitable for certain types of games.

I honestly don't remember nothing that was that overt, but it was never something that really bothered me, as long as it well comunicated to the player that you may not pass. It's onnly a problem insofar as you're wondering if you're doing something wrong and you think you might be able to pass through it.
I understand that indeed it is stupid, and it's preferable if they should find something that looks like a believable barrier, but I'm mostly concerned with game logic and not too autistic about having something not look realistic, it never really mattered to me, maybe because my first games on the 80s were all pretty abstract looking to bein with and the barriers were just amorphous color blocks or something.

An area in my town had one of these, I think it was a mission (basically a century+ year old Spanish outpost), and I "snuck" over it by simply climbing the uncovered steps behind it, then ran to the top. It was the most my heart had ever beat in my life at that point, as though my juvenile brain saw immediate, effortless dopamine by breaking the rules.
