It's a fantastic feature on Xbox when a game is actually supported and you can just pop in an old disc and play it at 4k 60fps but they are so limited on the games actually available with only like 1/3 of the 360 library and way less of the original Xbox offered. It's just a small form factor PC with decent specs for it's size that happens to come with a controller. There's nothing console like about it. Heck Valve even states in the description you can install Windows on it if you prefer that. There's nothing stopping you from using DLsite GOG or even EA's storefront if you want.
Now if you tried installing whatever the fuck you wanted on a PS5 or Xbox One you'd have a high likelihood of simply bricking your hardware unless you really REALLY know what your doing.

Sure there are reasons. Most of my game library is on steam. They have far better discount sales than PS store. You also don't have to pay for the online features. Over time that makes it a better investment. I'm considering the steam machine because if I have to move I don't want to haul around (and worry about) my big gaming PC if the work or training is only temporary.

I was considering the Xbox S for that, but now I think I'd rather go with steam. I'd rather streamline everything through steam since I prefer it to every other gaming client, especially for the profile customization and social aspect. Epic games is serviceable, but I still don't like it. Xbox pass I only have just to save money instead of buying new games for 60 dollars when I already a massive backlog because of the volume of games already I have on steam. In a pinch, I could just bring my steam deck with me, but the processing power is a little bit too weak for most games I'm into playing, lest I be stuck playing metroidvanias.

You also have to realize that this isn't something isolated to their tech. Proton/FEX on ARM? That means your phone and general Android devices will be able to start playing Steam libraries without the need for streaming if your device is strong enough, turning ALL those Raspberry Pis and numerous various micro devices or so forth into potential Steam hardware. Xbox is so proud of their idea of the cloud system on anything but actually getting any device worth a damn to kick it up without streaming that significantly is a gigantic step forwards and eats Microsoft's lunch in one fell swoop.

Everybody else is just going "WE GOT BRAND RECOGNITION, SEE? WE'RE SO AWESOME" and hoping to coast on that for success, meanwhile Valve put in the elbow grease to spread their influence under everybody's noses, and anyone on Linux that still goes towards Steam is still a success for Valve.
