You have to look at the non-Westernshit ones for the good ones. Sword of Heaven and Earth feels like an official third Elibe entry. New Theory of Thracia is also Japanese and is better than most GBA Westshit hacks.

I'm currently on chapter 16 of Dream Of Five, I really like it so far. It's been reasonably difficult cuz I'm retarded and I'm enjoying the writing even if leans heavy into the angst. Onduris was fun.

Drums of War and upcoming Homecoming are also angst-heavy, so it's just the writer's quirk, alongside heavy use of journals as a narrative device. I personally picked Musain first, and I had fun even if the enemy roster was so mage-heavy that the wyvern I wanted to use was benched immediately. I hope you won't get stuck in the last third, I remember the last few maps being quite tough.

There's Absolution that's in an eternal WIP state but the smaller projects are starting to be released. Granted, most of them are proof-of-concept roguelites but that's at least something. Also Touhou Emblem 2

I have yet to play Homecoming but that was one of my big criticism of DoW and Do5, the fact it always needs to be all doom and gloom all the time.
Though I felt this was more of an issue in Dream of Five that felt 100% serious all the time while Drums still felt like it had some welcome moments of levity.
Even the supports I got in Dream of Five all feel pretty mopey while Drums still had some funny ones.
The other is some of the overdesigned portraits, which seemingly got worse in Homecoming
But I do like these GBA romhacks that don't go full retard with the Skill Emblem bullshit.

I really liked DLaTMoL but never finished it.
I was playing it blind ironman and there was a bit of difficulty spike around chapter 17-18.
I got to chapter 19 which was an absolute slaughter, I ended up going too slow and getting fucked by dragon reinforcements.

Drums has that slight "ragbag bunch of hastily recruited guys slowly morphing into a real force" which invites some lighter scenes while DoF's main plot is more or less Rena's show with some emotional support from side characters. The most important of route split characters being Arcus doesn't help as he also angsts a lot. I haven't played Onduris, but Musain's cast being over-the-top helped bring the mood to a manageable level.
I might be easily pleased, but I like my units getting a fancier portrait after promoting.

I hate that LT has been regularly developed for years and yet they still haven't gotten all the jank out of the engine. For fucks sake, I played a recent one and it still has the volume and screen size sliders uneven, it looks so unprofessional. At least the menus don't really have that awful lag on them anymore. But it just sucks because Tactile feels EXACTLY like the GBA engine so I know it's possible for them to do better. God I wish Tactile was open source and not locked behind a dude who doesn't feel like working on it anymore.

I played Sacred Echoes because I wanted to experience the story of Valentia and it was easier to emulate than a 3DS game. It was really fun and did feel just like an actual GBA Fire Emblem.

I will never forget the fanbase for shitting on Fates model and eating up 3Hs.
While FW shows promise with that chariot style enemy class, I dont think the game will have such an unique flair as Hoshido had.
Doesn't help 3H already had some roman influences with characters like warriors and Heroes so FW isnt really that unique.
Its was fun to see Halberdiers, Thieves, Myrmidons, etc reporpused to fit the japanese aesthetic.
Nevermind the new classes like Onis and Puppeteer.

Seems self evident, but the usual assumption is that romhackfags are into romhacks, but that doesn't appear to be the case to my eyes, seems like it's people who want more GBAFE. They "feel" like GBA because they're going off the same engine. But most hacks nowadays don't play like them at all. If somebody told me that they wanted more GBA FE and that I should recommend them a hack for that, it wouldn't make any sense to suggest something like Cerulean Crescent, but something like tacthack would be a much more obvious choice. You sound like you just don't like the GBA engine in general.

Not really no. A lot of hacks feel like they're trying to turn the GBA games into 3DS FE with all the skill bloat and inflated growths/stats. The GBA games are just the easiest FE games to make your own custom FE in.
