I don't hate New Vegas but I think it's wrongfully put on a pedestal. I quite enjoy the first portion and the arrival at the Strip, but after you're expected to leave for a time and the focus lands outside adventure and the pursuit of an ultimate goal (Revenge/Chip) that the quality fades a little. The game is banking on your caring enough about House/NCR/Legion to stick around and do their chores for them but for me personally I just kind of didn't want to do that the first time I played. Benny really should have persisted as a Villain for much longer instead of being killed upon your arrival at Vegas, to give you more of a personal impetus to want to play sides.
The thing that 1/2/3 all share is the overarching sense of Journey. 3 absolutely bungles the execution but it's the correct spirit. Where New Vegas and 4 ironically both fuck up is that they kinda just give you your main destination halfway through and then you're caught up in faction disputes where everyone is just acting like total retards.
The simplicity of 1 really hasn't been trumped for me. I think it's sort of important that the Vault you're trying to save is pretty much the best place to live in the whole world and your journey through the Wasteland only enforces that.
