Okay I formatted my schizo 4 am ramblings so it reads better
I tried Rune Factory 4 as a farm/life sim game, but after 10 hours, I’m struggling to get into it. The game has a ton of systems—leveling up skills, taming monsters, growing crops, cooking, crafting, and more—but it feels pointless.
The food I make is weak, and I have to grind a lot to improve it. The crafted sword I worked hard for barely outperforms the one I bought. Crops don’t sell for much, so farming feels unrewarding.
The NPCs are charming with lots of dialogue, but random events block personal quests, which is frustrating.
Taming monsters is weird—you throw random items (sometimes their own drops or unrelated stuff) at them, and they might help in fights or drop loot. It feels like a grind-heavy game with cute characters but no clear purpose.
In contrast, Stardew Valley feels logical and streamlined. I can plan my day, identify needed resources, and see meaningful progress with upgrades and crops that scale with effort.
Rune Factory 4 might need more time to click, but I’m not sure. Dropped the game months ago, story wise I might be at the boss after the horse dude or next one after that now. Any tips to make this game more enjoyable, or does it just stay this grindy?

This is what I dislike the most about the game. SDV is just too predictable, the only hardships you have to overcome besides your own mistakes are all in the realm of RNG like an item not showing up at the traveling cart. By removing all the penalties and setbacks from Harvest Moon in an attempt to make the perfect casual game, all Ape did was make it feel less like a living world and more like a spreadsheet with a fancy 16-bit GUI. This is reflected in his last Chocolatier devblog posts where rants about the difficulty of making a game where people can't just min-max (or something).

You do something, you get more stamina/health in return. That's it. Learn to use a weapon type and you can make better weapons of that type.

You see cow, you pet cow, you give cow some good meal, cow likes you or doesn't. If cow like you, congratulation, you have a cow.

You plant crow, you water crow, they grow, you let the earth rest a bit, now the ground is a bit better than it was before.

That's the complex part. Cooking, you put ingredients for recipes you get from recipe breads, you can add filler (edible food with a higher level than your other ingredients), you use stamina, if the stamina cost is higher than your max stamina, you always fail, if it's not then you fail based on the percentage.
For crafting, you use ingredients from recipes (recipe bread again), you add up to 3 additional things which can literally be anything, items have a small description of what they do (like +4 atk). You craft the thing in the same way as food then you upgrade your new weapon/accessory with more items with description. There is diminished returns if you reuse the same item and that's it.
So if you want a steel sword, you select the steel sword recipe, pick a claw and an ore and add for example a strawberry (+3 vit +3 str), a potato(+2 vit) and an amethyst (+1 magic defense) and you get a steel sword that has +3 strength, +5 vitality +1 magic defense and +10 attack like a normal steel sword. You can then upgrade it by adding for example an iron ore and now it gets +1 def.
There's a hidden mechanic with ingredient level and rarity that give bonus stats but they don't matter if you don't play in hell mode like a moron.
I do agree that crafting could (and should) be explain better, even more so because it's also used in RF5 and not explained at all there. (RF guardian doesn't use that system at all, no freeform crafting)

The combat foundation is serviceable enough, the problem is often a lack of player and enemy mechanics to go with it. Top-down Zeldas have the same basic foundation but with a lot more enemy variety. Here, most of the enemies in the game deal damage just by trying to collide with the player, and most of those such as bats, golems, shadow brutes, etc. aren't even good at that
So we need enemies that can simply do more things so we in turn do more things during combat. They could move or warp to escape us which could make the slingshot more useful, spawn hazards under our feet Duggy-style so that entire mechanic isn't just tied to a completely unthreatening enemy, charge at us whenever they line up with us in a cardinal direction, all stuff that's been done before in other games but are simply absent here

Make the weapon swing in the direction of your mouse so the combat can actually be tolerable, I know there's a mod for that, but it's been long enough that it should be in the base game by now.
Also, the sword special needs a rework.
Daggers get a triple stab, hammers get a ground smash, but swords can block?
No one uses that sword blocking ability anyway so might as well change it to a tornado spin move or something.
SDV combat doesn't have to be too complex because that's what HC is for anyway.

You should re-download your mods and make a new folder from scratch. Several of them like CustomNPCExclusions, Error Handler, Expanded Preconditions Utility and Extra Map Layers have been absorbed into SMAPI and several others are no longer used by the community (other than compatibility with ancient mods) like Json Assets and Shop tile Framework.

First time player here as well. Already on Year 3.

Pay attention to the hints and tips in the books and the tv.
Get the upgraded inventory space as soon as you can.
Buy the magic book that makes you run faster as soon as you can.
Make enough money so that you always have coffee/triple-shot expressos to drink when you need to go on the town or your farm gets big.
Lastly, get the horse whenever you can.

Going faster and having full inventory space are the most important things in order to enjoy the rest of the game, in my opinion.
It is sandbox with no ending so there's no walkthrough. Just do whatever you feel like while learning things as you go and looking up the wiki if something seems too cryptic -there is always a book, a note or a line of dialogue that is a hint for everything in the game as far as I know, but some things can take time to find even with hints and you may want to just get done with it.

The "main quest" of the game is the Community Center. It unlocks new things and places to explore. But you have no time limit to complete it so don't worry and enjoy the game.

It seems it makes its own folder called "Stardrop Installed Mods" but then launches SMAPI to a folder in appdata called selected mods.

I assume with the mods I already have I place them in stardrop installed mods then select what I want and launch from stardrop.

Like for starters you'd probably have a smoother time if your bar here had your pick, weapon, food, staircases, and bombs accessible without as many filler inputs in between like the scythe and fishing rod

I really don't like the way secrets are implemented in SDV. Most of them are the opposite of rewarding, in terms of exploration. You're supposed to find something in the world, except it only unlocks after an arbitrary trigger. And since you checked those parts multiple times, you may oversee that it's now available.

A few examples.
The prismatic shart and the obelisks in the desert. The hint is in the middle of Pelican town on a tombstone that you probably clicked on many times. Oh, but if you collect the 0.00000000001% drop chance Dwarven Scrolls the text becomes legible! If you don't autistically re-check every interaction point in the game every now and then you won't find it.

The sewers. You get a scene hinting that Marlon has the key, and he may have lost it somewhere. You get a second scene where Marlon is snooping around the sewers. Can you find the lost key? Can you get it from Marlon or the adventurer's guild? FUCK NO, you have to complete the Museum collection and Gunther just gives it to you. The game misdirects you, and frustrates you if you try to use the hints to find the key.

And of course all the stuff that only unlock after the community center is complete. You have to recheck every corner of the game's world.

I like Grandpa's Farm that's an optional download for Stardew Valley Expanded. You should try SVE anyway if you've been mostly playing vanilla.

Grandpa's Farm is pretty similar in scale to the standard one, the other two SVE farms are ridiculously large so I wouldn't recommend those unless you want to do mass farming. It has some little secrets and hidden paths you can find that lead to some convenient shortcuts and a small quarry cave that doesn't feel cheaty. Also has some pre-placed fences for ranching that you can just quickly close off with a gate and 2 fence segments, but you can remove them in the mod's options.

I watched a podcast with this psychiatrist guy who said depression isn't this magical limbo that people somehow get stuck at, it is a consequence of your actions and people get depressed because they do things that make them depressed, usually out of escapism and comfort seeking, like a fat guy who can't say no to ice cream everyday because it is his comfort food, it makes him temporarily feel less bad short term at the cost of making him feel much worse long term and it compounds

At least to me, this was really true. Changing my habits and dropping what made me feel good short term, even if it sucked for a bit, actually made me regain my will to live, my ambition and made me feel purpose in life again. I said 'fuck this' and brute forced my way out of the pit I was in.

Alcohol (entirely), garbage comfort food like pizza, hamburger, sweets (not entirely but almost, like 95%), videogames (also not completely ofc) and porn. I also started to do things I didn't before like exercising and keeping a schedule, as starting new, good habits is just as important as dropping the shitty ones.
In-game Kent mentions that having a routine is good for you, and it really is. When you are a NEET like I was for a while, it's hard to keep a good sleep schedule or follow through with tasks because you feel like you have "infinite" time, this is subconscious thing, and this is fundamental because it will either compound into your good habits and make them better, or make your shitty ones worse.

Say you have a shit sleep schedule, as a consequence you're definitely not going to be eating well and healthy because some days you'll wake up late or sleep all day after spending the night pressing f5 on some internet forum reading about useless garbage or playing games, but then you're also not going to have energy or feel ready to do the things you know you should be doing and have been procrastinating on, because you sleep like shit and eat microwaved pizza (I did a lot, just like Shane).

I know it kinda seems cliche to tell people to stop eating fast food, sleep well and do some exercise like going for a walk, but that is because it WORKS, at least it did for me and lots of other people. It's not easy though, you'll have days you'll feel like going back to your old habits, but you'll have to force yourself through it until you no longer want to go back. I also think it's important to have to something to look forward to and realize that if you actually take charge you can turn your life around.
