i know the feeling more than i'd like to. the way that the defensive metagame has evolved is so peculiar to me because there are a lot of players who can asdi down while running/moving but they don't actually do anything with it. it's like people have cheater controllers that just let them do highly advanced tech for free and they never learn how to take advantage of it. running jc shines, full galint ledge dashes, huge +7+ advantages in neutral and they just can't do anything meaningful from it.

i'm not presuming your MMR or anything, but there's a lot of shit that changes from gold to platinum to diamond/master. gold and platinum players have like no defensive counterplay beyond occasionally DI'ing in the correct direction. crawling up to diamond and getting matched with much better players ended up teaching me how to get out of combos much more consistently (except for twin stick SDI, which the game straight up does not document at all despite being the best counter to the most "braindead" combos). diamond and master players also have much more refined and interesting punish games on average. there are, however, absolute fucking drones who only do what's optimal and just play neutral by spamming floorhug, which is awful.
i'm just saying that i can see where a lot of the most consistent criticisms about the game come from, but most of them are issues with gold / platinum gameplay.

also, there are swag options, but i will say that there's less incentive to go for them when so many moves are so safe (and jab cancel into tilt exists) that you'll get called out for, like, moonwalking out of shield pressure for a cross-up grab. a lot of it is tied to edge cancels or character-specific options however.

I think it's more accurate to say that people hate the way Ultimate is designed, even if they're not aware of it. There's two halves to Ultimate's gameplay: fundamentals and functions. Basic characteristics like speed, weight, hitboxes and mechanics like movement, hit stun, recovery (frames), recovery (to stage) comprise fundamentals. Functions are just character concepts.

The issue is that fundamentals are intentionally crippled by design, but functions can't be. You can't include a character like Olimar, Snake, Mega Man, etc. and have their character concept be intentionally crippled. It has to work at a fundamental level. So Olimar has to be able to harass you with projectiles that double as disjointed hitboxes, and Snake has to have options that reward him for exercising stage control (dthrow, utilt). This is all the more true when players are paying for these characters, so every DLC character is inherently privileged except Banjo and Sephiroth. Sephiroth in particular is a case of a functional character concept being absolutely butchered by the fundamentals of Ultimate, the tl;dr being that tilts are bad and his aerials aren't safe.

Because the fundamentals of Ultimate are crippled by design, fundamental-leaning characters don't have satisfying counterplay to function-leaning characters. In a better-designed game, a character like Snake or ROB would be at a significant disadvantage the second you get in against them; but because of the way that hit stun, knockback, movement, etc. work, you're left with fewer fundamentals-based options and Snake gets to get away because he NEEDS a fucking frame 1 get-off-me for his character concept to function, just like ROB NEEDS a fucking frame 4 dtilt. If players - not just characters - were allowed to be good, Ultimate would be closer to a game like GG Strive in terms of balance, where you have wildly different characters who still work well(ish) together.

Steve is of course the worst example of this.
