Again, Nomura was writing the story with the idea that Roxas was created with Ven’s heart. So his heart would simply be put back in his original body, not a fake replica clone. Thinking Roxas and Ven would be two separate people who would coexist was a totally made up headcanon of the fandom. So Nomura appeased them, but it doesn’t really make sense narratively. And yes, Nomura stayed in an interview a few years ago that he originally had a story where Roxas would not return, he struggled til the last minute with bringing him back and decided to do so for fans.

No it’s correct. Nomura said so in one of the Ultimania books that when Sora turned the Keyblade on himself Ven’s heart stayed in Roxas. Nothing in the games contradicts this. What annoys me about this fandom is the huge level of denial. Nomura can flat out state that he altered the story due to the fan expectations, that he did not plan for full on physical versions of Roxas and Xion walking around, and that he actually struggled a lot with caving in to the fans’ version of the story. And they will still twist his words to make it out that he planned it their preferred way all along. Even with him writing self-aware dialogue with Axel poking fun at it being a plot point to iron out. Like come on people!

I've not seen fans say this. I think it's generally accepted that the original plan was not to revive Roxas; at one stage 2 was also the end of the series, still after the development of Days the direction of the story changed with Xion and then the BBS trio. KH3 became about saving them all as per Ansem the Wise's speeches about Sora in BBS' secret ending and DDD. So it seemed like the decision to bring all the characters back was made pretty early on. Maybe in the immediate aftermath of Days and seeing the fan reception. I don't believe it reached the point where he was writing a version of 3 where Roxas and Xion didn't return, seeing as it was already set up two games prior. Plus the Recoded ending with Namine.

Stories change all the time though I'm pretty confidant the original scenarios for KH1 and KH2 were tweaked as well. Like the beta trailer teasing the ending where Sora disappeared similar to KH3 after becoming a Heartless and Another Side, Another Story building off that because it was all finished prior to the game itself being finalized. So had they stuck with that the series could've gone in a very different direction then.

Also I'd add that Roxas and Xion's ends always felt uncharacteristically bleak for the series especially when one of the main themes of KH1 going into 2 prior to Days was the idea of not leaving people behind or forgetting them like what happened with Sora and also Riku distancing himself from everyone and seeing himself as a monster. So I think there always had to be some kind of resolution for the Nobodies even if that meant sticking them in a datascape together and not the replica thing. These days a lot of characters get unceremoniously offed but usually we haven't spent as much time with them as we did Roxas and Xion. Like most of the Dark Road cast or the keykids in UX, so maybe Nomura thinks he can get away with it more there. And then Strelitzia who was focused on a little more is back in some form anyway.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. I could see the original plan being that Roxas, Namine and Xion would've been put in the Simulated Twilight Town with the Hayner, Pence and Olette that existed there. Which would've been slightly more bittersweet and also means they wouldn't be involved in the plot of 3 directly fighting in the Keyblade Graveyard and stuff. But it still leaves the door open for them to return to the real world or for Axel to visit them in datascape given things can leave that world and become real like the two munny pouches.

So that works as an alternate draft if Nomura wanted to excise all the replica stuff and make the final battle less crowded. And they do bring up putting Roxas' heart in the simulated Twilight Town early on in 3 before that's completely dropped. So idk if that's a holdover idea from an earlier draft or something.

I actually think in some ways that ending might've been better for Roxas and Xion because bringing them back fully and having them participate in the war means people will be asking where Roxas is any time something goes down now. And I doubt Nomura has plans to use him or Xion much going forward. We'll see though. They might find some use for Namine in the plot given her powers.

Lea felt “familiar” hanging out with Kairi. There’s even a scene in the KH2 novel where Kairi says she feels like Axel has helped her countless times before. That’s the direction I think Nomura was going.

You even see it in the interaction with Axel and Ventus in Mysterious Tower. Axel expected Ven to have Roxas’s memories, but when he only had his BBS memories he was pointing out how confusing the story is.

It’s just…very different from what fans assumed the story would do. In that respect, they probably made the “right” decision to just go the replica route.

But then I think it gets convoluted because with Xion in the mix as well Sora would either have to have access to both hers and Roxas' memories which would be a bit weird or Ventus ends up with Roxas' memories which strengthens the bond between him and Axel going forward.

But then the connection between Roxas and Ventus was always superficial, Nomura could've set up there being more of a connection between the two personality-wise hence why Roxas took his appearance but he never did. In the end it was Xion that briefly took the appearance of Ven in Days and the only other connection is that Axel met Ven before. Also Even's little premonition/prediction that he'd meet Ventus again which turned out to be Roxas. Plus it would've become even more convoluted with Ventus' KHUX memories and Vanitas layered on top of now having Roxas'.

So they could've gone the route of having Ventus remembering being Roxas, Kairi remembering Namine and Sora remembering Xion but then you'd wonder how that effects those characters present relationships and it could get weird. The more I think about it the less it works. I think it only fit back when KH2 just came out and it was just Roxas and Namine, because that relationship can easily be carried forward via Sora and Kairi. So yeah in the end reviving them via data or replicas was the better call.

This is my thought basically. Re: Coded came out before BBSFM did, which hammered home the concept even more. The idea of them returning was obviously cemented years before 3 was a concept or DDD came out, so to see people say that it was a last-minute decision is just eye-rolling. I'd believe that Roxas wasn't going to return, but really only for 2 and maybe Re: Coded. Same for Xion and Naminé. Blank Points spells it out that everyone was going to be saved and I don't think being stuck in a data version of a world really constitutes that. It's more like purgatory which is really undeserving for them.

I do feel like the replica stuff in 3 is a bit clunky and they dedicated too much time to it. And it also feels slightly unnecessary when previous games established that the other norts can exist in the future without them like in DDD because YX is acting as a portal for them and ferrying them around during that game iirc. And like I said if objects and beings can leave the data world as established by the munny pouch and Sora's Heartless in Coded (nearly) then recreating Roxas, Namine and Xion in data and bringing them into the real world could've worked since their hearts were real and that could've made the rest of them so. Granted we don't know much about what happens when data beings leave their own world, maybe we'll find out with Strelitzia in 4. But there was precedent with data becoming real prior to 3 and it would've been less complex than all the replica shenanigans. I think it became too technical when it didn't need to be.

Roxas was a fragmented part of Sora. He tried to find friendship and the best he could get was an unhinged adult with a shady past who lied to him (no offense Axel). And a fake simulation of real kids. Going back to Sora and having a real connection with Namine (through Kairi) was what made him whole. I liked it. I dunno. I don’t really want KH to be this series where only 100% perfectly happy fairy tale endings are allowed. I don’t think that mentality is gonna work in the new story arc, either.

Probably. I think it was planned for Vexen to be working on the replicas as early as when DDD was being written because he's one of the two apprentices to not appear so he can disappear and rejoin. And we know they planned the same for Dilan/Xaldin but he was cut from the Real Organization for some reason. So they could've explained that more in BBS Vol 2 seeing as DDD never mentions the replicas and Dark Riku inexplicably appears in Monstro.

In fact I checked the wiki and it doesn't confirm that is Dark Riku in Monstro but who else could it be? His eyes aren't yellow but still. Maybe an Ultimania mentions it. But that would lend credence to Vexen already working on the replicas if he's there alone because the other norts who were replica-less as of DDD like Xemnas and Ansem needed Young Xehanort with them to appear.

The issue was that by the time KH2 came out...it was Roxas' first outing with just the prologue and ending stretch to his name. We knew he's Sora's Nobody, was in the Org, left, then got intercepted by Riku, and that Axel was his friend, but that was it with barely any depth. Well 2's ending left it ambiguous as to whether either of them remembered being Roxas and Namine. It was the subsequent games that settled on Roxas' memories being locked away so Sora couldn't remember them. I think part of the reason they avoided that was because they didn't want to write Sora with that baggage. Although KH2 already made Sora angrier which I thought was a side-effect of Roxas returning to him. But that didn't carry over to other games because he accepted his fate and went to sleep inside him again once he reunited with Namine I guess. I think they try to avoid changing Sora's character too drastically. Like there's that one concept art of Roxas where he's identical to Sora, which I actually believe was going to be Sora without his memories as a Nobody rather than Sora and Roxas being more like separate entities.

It'd be interesting in KH4 if Sora does pick up some more of his Roxas-isms again. He seems more serious in the trailers and images so far, we'll see how much that sticks. It'd help hammer home that Roxas was the other side of Sora and they aren't the polar opposites people think. I've always thought that Roxas is what was within Sora, not so much his darkness but an alternate version of him had his life been tougher.

I'm not sure that they are. Ansem the Wise and the Master of Masters both distinguish between data and whatever unreality is. But it's a little weird that MoM claims Quadratum was a world he couldn't conceive when it does exist as a data world of sorts in Toy Box. And Yozora's weapon has that data-cube effect too unless that's a coincidence. But I don't think Unreality is a realm so much as it is a whole other universe on the opposite side of the Kingdom Hearts one, which consists of all those realms including the datascape. The only realms that overlap with Unreality are the Final World and the Astral Plane. Those places do seem to be connected, they may even be the same place under different names, not the first time that's happened in KH.

Having said all that my theory is that the Toy Box we visit in KH3 was located in the Astral Plane which is why it was empyt and full of Heartless. And that'd explain why Verum Rex existed there because maybe it bled through from Unreality into that realm. Do we get confirmation Verum Rex existed in the real Toy Box world? Because the toys didn't seem to realize immediately when they'd been transported to the fake world. But yeah there is something weird going on with the Toy Box world, they never specified what type of world it was beyond being a copy.

Maybe it had something to do with portals/battlegates since they're so prominent in DDD and then 3. But the nature of those wasn't explained much either. Either way Young Xehanort was able to create the copy and move the toys without them noticing.

One of Sora's goals is saving Roxas, who's inside of him, but after rescuing Ventus he decides to fight Xehanort instead of doing that. But it's okay, since Roxas falls from the sky with Oathkeeper and Oblivion in hand (remember when dual wielding had rules?). Nobody is supposed to remember Xion, but Xemnas blatantly does, and the Organization somehow created a 1:1 replica of the girl from Days off of a fucking blueprint (thank God for plot conveniences!), despite her only becoming that way through her experiences in Days, especially her relationship with Sora/Roxas/Axel/Riku. It's easy to chalk these up to bad writing, but it's even more likely to be the result of last minute rewrites.

I only recall the leak saying the Founders were trying to compile an "astral record" by retrieving fragments of the Book of Prophecies from the Astral Plane because pieces were missing. Freya also says it's a place swirling with memories and emotions. Last time they used the term mental was when describing Darkness in Union Cross I think but it was interchangeable with psychic in fan translations iirc. I'm gonna be honest I did find the whole labyrinth set piece to be bland compared to the endgame environments in previous games. I mean the way it raises out of the ground is neat and I liked that there were some platforming bits between the arenas but it could've had more going on. Even just some variety between the zones where you fight the norts. I think they tried to have it so the sun was setting more with each fight but that was it.

They were already going for the whole ritual sacrifice thing so they could've just turned it into a full on temple with booby traps you have to get past to reach the top where the nort court are.

The little character book that came out around KH2’s release described Roxas as the reverse hidden side of Sora. His shadow, to use Jungian terms. Namine also calls herself Kairi’s shadow. It’s why they needed to merge back. It’s a metaphor for shadow reintegration.

FF7 also had the Sephiroth copies that yearned for the reunion with Jenova which you could view as being similar to the Nobodies wanting Kingdom Hearts and later there's the way Xehanort uses them as containers for his essence similar to Hojo injecting the clones with Jenova cells. I'm curious if KHIV will tap into any of that at all and echo the Roxas stuff from before or if Quadratum could be more of a dystopia. It would be interesting if that fight with the giant Darkside in Shibuya just ended with it being taken out by some high-tech missiles and Sora gets arrested for intervening. I’m not convinced that the whole turncoat idea was even a thing in Nomura’s original idea for the story. It only exists to help get R+X bodies, but that wasn’t Nomura’s original story route.

In the DDD Ultimania, Nomura emphasized that MX planned to control the members completely. If becoming a vessel did nothing but make the eyes yellow, he wouldnt have chosen Sora.

Plus, the idea is that they host Xehanort’s heart of pure darkness. They should have gradually become corrupted by it, not undergoing redemption arcs off-screen. They should only have been redeemed when Sora defeats them at the KG.

Agreed, splitting them up into types to unlock so you're constantly remembering to go back to old places and unlocking new moves made them great. only improvement I can think of is making the team formations into real moves that can be used wherever. Puzzle pieces were less charming but similar in requiring you to unlock moves, but the lucky emblems might as well just ask you to press triangle or open a chest.

But to be fair the rest of the series isn't interested in little quests like KH1 in general. I think the problem is that battle options are cluttered and movement too op at this point. sora showing growth is good, just wish shit like flowmotion and airstep were unlocked in the late game so there'd be room for things like this.

It’s also very possible that Dilan would have received significant development in BBSV2, since it was gonna show the events of Xehanort’s experiments. He’d actually be a real character with motivations and a personality and not a meme.

But since KH3 was literally missing half of the BBS prequel dualogy to set up its conclusion, it’s no wonder so many aspects of the story needed rewrites, got cut, or just fell completely flat and they needed fanservice to compensate.

Hard to say. But I’d wonder if the fandom would even take it well if the series tried to “grow up”. I’d argue that one of the few times the series flirted with maturity was the KH2 prologue and 358/2 Days, where the outcomes are a little bittersweet. And both times the fandom couldn’t handle it and demanded the endings be “fixed” to be a generic shounen happy ending.

Happy endings themselves aren’t childish. But both of those two games were metaphors for growing up. The 358 story had the trio eventually went separate ways. Not because they weren’t friends but because they were changing and growing up to develop different goals for the future. Xion resisted at first but eventually did want to go “home” since she felt her essence merging with Sora. After that, Roxas wanted to explore his human origins instead of ice cream time with Axel. And Axel desperately wanted things to stay the same because he was coping with his past trauma. Sure, the story needed some closure/catharsis. But I’m not surprised that a pushing a magic reset button to revive R+X and put everyone back on the clock tower was something Nomura wasn’t that thrilled about writing. But fans can’t even discuss this criticism if the storytelling without autistic meltdowns.

I've seen a lot of people posit that the lights hitting darkside are military like in kaiju movies because unreality is realistic, but the contrails' rendering look like how they KH does magic effects. The dust particles are sparkling like in the following image in the same location.
More likely that they're shots fired by the blue and yellow gigases or them flying into it. They have similar effects which probably wouldn't be used for realistic weapons.

Wont discount it potentially being mickey and riku or their keyblades or the combined keyblade either, as the colors fit with any of these. I don't think donald and goofy though as I'm 100% they'd use green unmistakably.

Yeah they seem to be giving Quadratum a very grounded real world feel from what we've seen from the trailers that kind of clashes with the Gigas more toyetic sci fi aesthetic. We haven't seen anything fantastical from the real version of the world yet, only the video game adaptation. I've liked formchanges ever since Lingering Will. But I'm wondering if scrap and build for IV is just a slightly different version of that. If that is what Sora is going in the trailer when he creates that light drill from the Darkside. So rather than changing your keyblade you create constructs out of darkness/light which changes your fighting style briefly. Maybe the constructs you create are determinant on which type of enemy you're fighting, or how powerful they are in order to gather enough light/darkness to create a weapon. They could combine it a little with the attraction mechanic too with some constructs being more vehicular or like mobile weapon platforms.

He's a commander so he's probably just in charge of his squad, unless he holds an important political position (the JP version did call him Shogun iirc) which is fine because back in medieval times they'd send teenage royalty into battle. But given Noctis was 20 Yozora is probably a similar age and not a teenager, he's taller than Sora and Riku who are in their mid to late teens as well. So it's not unrealistic for him to be in the military at that age, most countries allow you to join at 18 or younger. Add to that he might be a prodigy born with special powers and his dad could be a high-ranking figure and it makes sense.

If it turns out all the characters are teenagers then I'd agree it's no different from Kingdom Hearts where all the keyblade wielders we see save for Odin. Eraqus and Xehanort are kids but so far it seems like Yozora and his friends are in their 20s and we have Luxord as well.

I was hoping Missing-Link would introduce more adult keyblade wielders but it seemed like a lot of the characters were still kids even thought there clearly have to be adults around for any of this bloodlines to persist unless everyone dies young bc of occupational hazards. The art style made it hard to tell sometimes. Like what age is picrel?

I tried stealing quotes from other things in the series like keyblade names, "Destinies Gather" is the quote from the end of the 2FM secret ending, "Mirror of Night" was an alternate name for Yozora's theme and "After Light" is a play on Afterlife and the fact Unreality is beyond light and darkness.

It's difficult to pick stuff that doesn't sound fanficcy because KH itself can be unpredictable with it's titles. Then we ended up with Dark Road, Melody of Memory and Missing-Link which were more tame and MoM is pretty close to Chain of Memories. Maybe we'll get another game like them down the line to make it a "memory trilogy"

What really pisses me off about this series is that it's supposed to be about the power of friendship but the party members become less and less useful with every new game to the point where they’re completely worthless in battle. KH2 was the only one that actually made good use of them since you needed your party to stay alive to use Drive Forms and Limits against tough bosses, It really matched the theme of ‘my friends are my power.’ But by the time we got to KH3, Sora turned into a one man army who didn’t need anyone’s help at all. And the story even treated him that way as he single handedly took down all of OrgXIII including Xehanort by himself. It totally contradicts the message the series is built on don't you think?

That's not why she went to get merged into Sora. Even up til the end she did everything for Roxas and Axel. Her continued existence meant that Roxas would eventually be actually destroyed.
