I feel sorry for Arnell Hallowleaf. He was crucified and tortured for 40 years, and the one thing that kept him from killing himself was that there was a slight chance that he might one day get to see his daughter Jenvelle one day. Imagine enduring the worst tortures the mind can come up with, your own daughter being mindwiped so she is the one to administer the tortures, which is a level of torture that goes beyond the physical. Yet you endure, because you see that she is conflicted. You hold on to hope for 40 years, because Jenevelle is not dead, and there's still a slim change.

And when it finally happens. You survive, you endure, for those 40 years, and she walks into the room. You finally embrace your Jenevelle.

Only for her to say "Actually, I'm going to go by Shadowheart, my cult code name. They're the ones who did this to you and did this to me, but you know what? You can't cast light....without a little shadow :)"

So now you have to call her by her cult codename for the rest of your long lives because her writer thought that line was deep, or perhaps because it was more coding work to have two recorded lines for her for the rest of the game depending on yuor choices. Your Jenevelle, the reason you didn't kill yourself, just says "Don't call me that. Call me by the cult codename".

Well, there's the obvious issue that they would have to re record every line with companions now calling her

instead of Shadowheart.
The next issue is that for once, people see that it's just obvious political pandering and move on, rather than dwell on it and argue about it.
Besides Nocturne and the obviously questionable backstory there, it's easy to see that this decision wasn't made because it made narrative sense but rather to collect points on social media.

The best alternative one can provide is the fact that Shart was originally supposed to be more edgy and retain more of that edge even on her Selune route, where her keeping that name makes some sense, especially the part of

I guess the influence of her VA also plays some role here, Jennifer English seemingly can't do an "evil voice", or they didn't even bother to give her directions to an evil one for the Dark Justiciar path, hence all of those lines come across as extra cringe.
I recently viewed a video from the epilogue with Dark Justiciar Shart dialogue and you couldn't tell by the voice that she was supposed to be the head of an entire Sharran Cloister as well as the literal Chosen of Shar.

I was thinking of doing something like a run where I rush to Act 2 to pick up Minthara and bring her back and play with her as the main character. Would the game allow that sort of thing to happen? I know there's the limitation of not being able to bring Minthara back to Act 1 areas (does this include the creche?) without abusing bugs so maybe I'd clear the Act 1 stuff, and then pick up Minthara first thing and then bench my Tav in Withers' cabinet. So the specific things I'd be wondering about are:

- Would the game start breaking on plot points if the Tav is in the cabinet? Can Tav be put in the cabinet? That might screw up my plans if I can't.
- If my Tav is actually the Dark Urge, would this be an issue too? Probably not going to try but I'm curious.
- What if I kill the Tav/Dark Urge and leave them permadead?
- Can I romance companions if I scrounge up enough affection points in Acts 2+3?

I think Karlach would be unromanceable since the Tiefling party is the point of no return for getting it going (don't know if they ever fixed that).
But I think the other girls' romances take off seriously after the Gauntlet of Shar in Act 2, so I just need to get enough affection before that, right?

That somewhat cringy line aside - I don't think it's meant to be that deep, but that's another topic - there's nothing inherently poorly written about Shadowheart not immediately discarding her cult name. Self-identity is complex and so are the feelings she would still hold for her Sharran past, the Mother Superior, and even Shar herself. These are not just bad memories, an abusive and overbearing "mother," and a cruel goddess, respectively. You can't just throw 40 years of even mostly traumatic memories in the trash like that, especially since they shaped the person you are today. Healing is a process that takes time. I'm sure she would eventually become comfortable with her birth name, but it's not like a switch she can simply turn on and off. I'm not so much defending convoluted writing as saying there is a basis in real life for the idea that letting go of one's internalized name is difficult.

I'm not saying she would be completely over it and healed from the experience right away, but going by the cult name is not the way people would begin their process.

You might have been right if she was actually in the middle of an identity crisis, but once she learns that her entire time with the cult was false pretenses, and she was never supposed to be a Sharran, they just lied to her, then that helps a lot with any identity concerns. If they had saved her life she might feel different, but that was just a lie. If they had become a family to her then she might feel different, but she hated them all and was abused by them all except Nocturne. Like there's just no real good reason for her to hold on to any of this identity, once she learns it was literally all false pretenses. If she chose to join the cult she might want to live with that decision, but even her initial "choice" to join was made under false pretenses. She owes them nothing, and she was never meant to be a Sharran it was all false pretenses, so I don't really think she's that confused. I'm fairly certain the real reason is because they didn't want like 30% more voice lines associated with her, since every act 3 voice line that mentions her by name would have to have two versions. This game has some parts of excellent attention to detail and effort, but other parts where they did skimp, and I think this is just one of those times where they wanted to skimp, and so John was tasked with "just give some reason why she doesn't want to use the old name" and that's the best he could come up with.

The more I play this game the more I realize that all the story and characters are completely fucking retarded, nothing really makes sense and it doesn't even try to. I don't really remember much of the story or romances of DOS2 other that there were some and you could easily ignore it and focus on the meat of the game which was the tactical game-play. I kinda wish bg3 was like that too, I even imagine that the story would actually be better if it's focus was narrower.

Secondly, people wanted the ability to recruit her without purging the grove because it makes the most logical sense. It's around that time we learn that the artifact is shielding us from being mind controlled, and we learn that cult operates through mind control. So it makes the most logical sense to start testing people for also being able to be shielded from the mind control just like we are, and turning an ex cultist to your cause opens up tons of intel they hold, not to mention someone who has a personal reason for revenge. And sure enough, that is exactly what happens, so the writers agree with what is logical. Minthara gives us intel, and is the most motivated party member due to her personal lust for revenge.

Patch 5 was 2 years ago, November of 2023, which is when they made it so you can knock her out and she'll show up in act 2. But there was actually a mod even before that that did the same thing. It had a lot of downloads, because people agree that there's no real reason you couldn't just apply the artifact protection to anyone. The emperor says it's taxing for him to do it a lot, but doing it to important people makes more sense than not doing it, so it makes the most sense to do it to the commander of the Absolute's forces in the area. Applying the artifact protection to Minthara makes more sense than not doing it, and the writers agree which is why they made it easier to do that.

There are actually quite a few messed up endings in bg3 that one should try to avoid since they're legit messed up, even if you don't really care about the character. Wyll being a lemure is another that comes to mind.

Gale is suspiciously lacking a truly bad ending, at least a unique one other than ceramorphosis. If he blows himself up, he gets to bang Mystra for the rest of eternity. If he rejects Mystra, he becomes a god. He kind of wins either way. I guess his worst ending would be to die before the heroic sacrifice so Mystra doesn't save him, but that's not actually different from anyone else's dying before the end of the game.

There are two warnings. One that says an untadpoled companion when you bring Halsin, and another one for when you bring Minthara after she had been sentenced to death. If you walk around with her after the sentencing, you have to pass speech checks giving a reason why she's not in prison. If you were with Minth and the narrator gave you the warning about untadpoled, then it was simply a glitch, and the wrong of the two warnings played.

A fun experiment would be to bring Halsin, and see if it glitches in the other direction and gives you the warning about jail.

If you never get the Karsus book for Gale in Act 3, he gets destroyed by Mystra if he tries to ascend. His fate here is terrible regardless, but it's even worse if Raphael is alive.

I've had this happen to Gale on a couple of my quick playthroughs where I didn't bother killing Raphael and didn't finish Gale's quest. If his Crown score is too high, you can't sway him away from the idea of godhood after the Netherbrain is dead

The offhand doesn't benefit from your Cha because you can only have one hexed weapon, so there's not much point in dual wielding and you're better off with Shadow Blade and shield. The only thing I'm worried about is if them showing up in BG3 and the achievement proc'ing is dependent on some quest progress or whatever that might get disabled/ended if the bubble pops at the inn. That's why I mentioned the Rolan thing because he has a quest line so it's not as simple as just keeping him alive. You need to go through the quest triggers for him IIRC. Makes me wonder how it works for the other tieflings too. If it's just a "are they alive?" check after you move onto Act 3, it would work. Even though you can easily steal the entire economy and never have to worry about gold or food again after level 5, which is very easy to reach, I always take time out of my runs to loot Waukeen's Rest for every bit of food it has. It's a little weird, perhaps, given that it's a burning building, but I find it to be a crucial chill moment where I think about what I want to do for that run and plot out the course.
