Halfway through dos2, and it's really making me appreciate how they ironed out all the kinks for bg3. Playing without a level-per-area map would be misery. There's no flow or freedom of movement really. (Maybe there is on lower difficulty idk). Also whoever came up with giving you peepers from level 9 to 14 when everything kills it is a bastard. Angel gets a whole cast that feels like it should be in the base game for all paths as far as writing goes it's the most complete. Demon gets a lot of interaction mid late game. I'd recommend against playing lich for story since it staggers a lot of it and makes you wait. Aeon is also interesting for story if you want to go full on law autism cop. Trickster people just play that to take better feats on their whole party than everyone else can

Speaking of BG3 I'm finally replaying it as a dark urge and it feels like they just sabotaged their own game by not making this the default. Act 3 feels significantly better when you're not some literally who with no connection to anything, and it'd be even better if they didn't have to account for the blank slate protagonist.

Finished chapter 2 of The Prophet. Honestly this one was a bit hit and miss, the plot was good but there was a lot of frustrating parts, especially the last dungeon which was full of some really tedious puzzles, including pixel hunting for key items which was super annoying.
I also had a bug in one puzzle where I couldn't interact with an object to get the item I needed, luckily I found the fix on the forums, dying fixes it.
Getting stuck in these fanmade modules can be scary because its not like these things are heavily documented, probably a couple hundred people at most have beaten even the most famous modules.
Whole plot is about preventing the apocalypse you've been seeing in your prophecies. I saw the twist at the end of the chapter coming a mile away but it was still executed well,

Sort of cheap ending to it though. The quasit died but took a considerable amount of his health down. But for some reason the spell Deny Death let me walk around while my condition was "paralyzed". Immune to any kind of damage but also unable to do anything. I suspect this is a bug due to having some fast healing thing active.

Snuck off to a corner with no enemies, combat ended, and I resurrected Cam to discuss what we should do: Finish them off, Quickload and fight, or Quickload and leave.
Finishing them off feels like a cheap second chance, robbing me of earning the victory, but I'm also fine with that after I think 5 tries. I know I could rest up and approach it with full resources, I just don't feel like it. After this is Nocticula, so we're moving on.
We're going to resurrect the team and finish him off, plus a shadow demon brute or two hanging around a bit away.

I'm not sure I agree. My favorite part of a game is usually always the early mid section. Where you're starting to get your legs beneath you and finding interesting gear but still have a long way to go in terms of ability.

I mostly agree with your points.
Also I would say that BG1 feels more open, and I like how the story evolves in complexity as you understand what's happening and advance the plotlines. The general structure of the story in 1 is more appealing to me.
Another thing is the sense of exploration in 1. When I played it as a kid, it really felt so fucking massive that you could just go off in any direction infinitely. Of course that's not truly the case, but I still got some of that feeling when I replayed recently for the first time in a very long time.
BG2 feels a bit more 'on rails' in that regard. You get your mission right in front of your face, and then yes there are some various approaches you can take and choices in Athkatla of what to do or not, but the progression feels much more linear to me, and doesn't quite have as much of that tabletop feel.

Ill Omen is pretty great for a first level, and scales pretty nicely. Basically "disadvantage" for the next 1d20 roll, and another d20 roll for every 5 caster levels, max five at 20th. Also this is caster level, not level-level, so as a lich I'm already at 5 charges each cast.

Play the Enhanced. Some grogtards are extremely loud about the companions it adds (who you really can actually just not take with you, believe it or not.)
And it's not like they're any more cringe than some of the vanilla companions.
As for SoD, I would play it as its own thing later or for a second run eventually. The biggest reason I don't play it is that I don't want to be overleveled for early BG2.
It's completely fine, but since there's a trans gnome or something (who you have to actively ask about to learn this) people equate it to Beamdog personally taking a shit on their face. Again, you can easily not take the companion, or even just ask them about that stuff.
As for the quality, I'd say it's pretty good. If you like BG1 then SoD is more Infinity Engine stuff. It's pretty linear, but pushes the IE a bit in ways that are kind of fun, and some of the encounters are more interesting than many in BG1 or 2.

tldr:
Play EE, skip any companions you don't care for (as you would anyhow, there's like 20 possible companions), play or skip SoD.
One thing you could do is export your character right at the end of BG1 (or even at the beginning of SoD), and then import that in BG2 if you didn't want to feel a bit overleveled to start with.

Another thing is that EE makes modding easier, and there are a few mods I'd even recommend to a first time player, but without mods is fine as well.

Companions like Hexxat will literally use a bait-and-switch character who is promptly disposed just so you can be thankful for the opportunity to recruit Beamdog's OC.
