This is a terrible argument. Reload did use P3P's script but that wouldn't mean they couldn't have added more anime cutscenes to it. Reload did alter the script from P3P quite a bit after all and it even added anime cutscenes back which weren't in P3P like the one in Yakushima or the ending cutscenes. There's a lot more in-engine cutscenes in Reload not because of P3P, but because the game was released in 2024 and a lot more can be done in-engine than what was possible on PS2-era hardware, the PS2 was actually the weakest console that gen hence why most of the "stunning graphics" people talk about on that console were taken from FMVs, just look at the Silent Hill games. Atlus have been doing this since P5. If you actually go back and play P5 it has a ton more in-engine cutscenes than any Persona game before it.
Either way both of these are subjective points. We can argue all day about them, but personally I'd rather save my sanity.

Such a simple way to tutorialize this too, where you can just add a subtext line into the Help menu that says exactly this kind of plain translation of the codes >>527128412 it would pop up the very first time that you use one of those skills. Then as you build your repertoire up from the small skill list, you are informed about the terminology as you get stronger and get longer and longer spell names. Instead, how it is, you just have to crack the code yourself or toggle the Help option on indefinitely and just try and memorize everything manually which is tiresome. There's no tutorial for this in any of the games I have played as far as I am aware.

I've ended up just installing the FF terms list mod instead. It's not perfect but I'm not sorry, I'm enjoying the game more now with some plain English/more familiar terms

It's a mix of Sanskrit and Japanese root words for the most part, with some other sources thrown in (Megido for example referencing the real place in Israel).
This kind of thing root into earlier RPGs than SMT such as dragon quest and wizardry where they made uniue names for the spells, but much like all things SMT their particular taste is to incorporate pieces of diverse real world mythology. It's very thematic.
That said, asfaik the Taru/Raku/Suka(/Maka) roots don't seem to be from anything particular and were probably chosen because they sound similar enough.

Whoopsie doodle! I don't have to learn codes to know what a wind spell does no, but it sure would be great if the game informed you at least one time what these non English code words mean. I know now that "Marakukaja" is "all party attack buff" and I can instantly associate these terms to the words. But the game literally never does this for you. And there's an entire laundry list of terminology for all the skills and spells, not just buffs/debuffs. The Help instantly tells you what it is, but the spell name itself does not. All it needs to show you is a table of terms, and any sensible person could download that pretty quickly. That info is not in P3R, P5R, Metaphor, P4G. I had to find it online by googling

Otherwise, it's just better (for me) to instantly know at a glance what the skill list is saying to me without keeping the Help button on so I can play and enjoy it. There's a reason Metaphor has the explanation baked in right underneath all the skill names. If it means so much to you, I'll think about turning off the mod for awhile again!

Nah, I definitely think the games should have something of a table in it at some point during a tutorial. Even just bit by bit, something that tells you at least one single solitary time in-game what the term "kaja" means, or what "raku" means. Not just what these words mean stuck together in your skill list. It's not English, it's nowhere near English.

Those mutliple syllable code word terms are only for an attack buff though. There are code words that blend together (to me) for basically every skill. And unless you're actually gonna sit down and read it all and look at the information to solve the code puzzle yourself, it still does not come to your brain naturally the way the word "Curaga" and "Firaga" will. You still have to do the little mini translation in your mind to an English description every time you read "Agidyne" or "Diarahan".

Also, notice that both of those spells do not share common upgrade code between them. The attack spell is "dyne" for "heavy" level damage while the cure is "rahan" for "heavy" level healing. Medium damage is "lao" for some reason for Fire, instead of "on" or "la" or "ga" like the other spell damages are.

Meanwhile, the medium healing signifier is "rama". FOUR different code words just to signify a medium/heavy gradation the between Fire spell and Heal spell. No common denominator, the Fire spells and Healing spells share completely different upgrade signifiers from each other. The only similarity is "ma/mer" for magnify cast, but even then, that's still not the same code word. We are talking about layers and layers and layers of terminology at this point when it could easily just communicate what the skill does in English.

All I said is that I wish the game itself had told me/checked me on these root words more specifically, especially when the root words start to switch around all over the place when skill lists get longer and longer and you want to fuse for better abilities. Bravery, Latin bravus/barbarus, French braverie, to be bold. Noun, abstract concept, but represents an image in your mind INSTANTLY to all English speakers. Bravery=Courage=Strength=Power. This is communicated to you in an instant upon reading the word. You instantly associate this word with a gameplay mechanical application without even knowing what the application is.

Tarukaja means......absolutely nothing to me or you. When you read this in English, you see nothing but a cypher. Not English, doesn't seem to be Japanese either. Some mystical spell name to sound cool. Now once you've read the code closely and you piece that "taru" means "attack" and kaja means "buff ally", you can try to memorize that string of syllables instantly, try to associate it to the gameplay mechanic. But only after you've manually associated the syllable code words to the concept can you then associate it to a mechanic. There's no communication.

And then, you see other skills called Rakukaja, Matarukaja, Sukukaja, Masukukaja, etc, and all the other skills with non English root syllables that I'm not mentioning right now popping up in the same lists....it blends together, very easily. The concepts are not self evident. They are cyphers.

Still think the code terminology isn't obtuse? I understand that it's more than likely second nature to you by now being a big fan of the series for however long. But most games that are in English have gameplay mechanic labels that communicate information to the player with English. Makoto gets consistent screen time across multiple arcs, partly due to Sae's palace and being tied to Sae. Sumire gets multiple forced scenes in royal before her arc in the true final dungeon of the game. this should have happened with Haru all things considered, since royal was actively trying to fix the problems of the vanilla game, like groo's whole existence in the story, who originally had all his screentime being forced, but royal made his content more optional if you do desired. Marie didn't get that level of forced scenes you must do with her. it's more of a P5 problem. P4 shares the same structure but the group dynamics change as more people join, and characters are allowed to use new characters to showcase development in the story.

Whenever you scroll over a skill, it tells you what it does. You have to scroll over a skill to select it so you'll always have the chance to review. It also helps because generally characters or Personas will only have access to a couple elements or magic spells, so it's easy to remember what they can do. Just keep playing and in a few sessions you will easily remember what skills do.

A big problem is how it will be localized now the P4 original DUB isn't returning. Every recent localization from Atlus West has had some dumb shit, and Naoto/Kanji is the backbone to most of the cancer in the fandom with headcanons being thrown around. If they can keep most things the same, it will be fine. If Naoto's VA for the dub is revealed to be trans, this community is going to be very cancerous for the next couple of years with all of the shitposting building up around that. It's not really the palace, itself though. It's not the gameplay either. It's the fucking characters. It's the fact that the game is just villain of the week at that point, and your own party feels like cardboard cut outs in an over the top cartoon that's entirely focused on the villain. I didn't care about Ann or Ryuji. I like some of the concepts of course, there's so many great ideas going on. But there are things about it that just do not appeal to me, aesthetically. I also don't like that the shadow world just bleeds over because your phone starts blinking. The shadow world felt phony and too over the top. So I was powering through something that didn't actually appeal to me the way I thought it would, just because it's supposed to be a great game. It has objectively great music, though I still think some of it is overplayed. Whenever P3R came out, I tried it of course. Really liked the new art, and a beautiful blue UX presentation. But Tartarus was just ass man, that's the dungeon? Shoot yourself? I just don't want to play that. I may play it again one day, maybe I'll play FES after 4 and I can maybe appreciate the old aesthetic more.

These many conflicting feelings are not so with Persona 4. Aesthetic issues aren't present, the game speaks to me artistically on a fundamental level. I love the minimalist designs, color blocking and perfect marigold yellow tone. It's not too busy, there's not too much black. And in the story, instead of villain of the week in an over the top cartoon where you change the bad guys heart, it's just character interactions. Main character arc/shadow of the week in a retro TV hell dimension. The people you're growing closer to are expanded on and given human depth and conflict directly THEMSELVES. The TV that reflects our darkness back at us, sucks us into a world of our own unconscious that wants to consume us. You stick together with your friends, and integrate your deepest and darkest fears to level up.

It's hard to go back to talking about society when the previous game presented a feint about society until suckerpunching you about it being a nature of life/purpose of death story told realistically with people welcoming it, people trying to make it happen, people giving up, and people trying to stop it.
P3 is a game for humanity. "The Answer" that Door discovered and Aigis would later was the game itself: living your life to the fullest because any day could be your last or their last or it could be all of our last day.
