Three top-tier builds exist, all highly effective and utilizing 1-2 warcries. Fubgun's (Fub) and Tuna's builds both use Infernal Cry with a mana leech gem early on for mana.
Phaze's Build
Phaze's build is less beginner-friendly. It leaves mana solutions to you until you get the Fuel the Fight cluster. His notes are excellent, but I dislike his endgame Trinity choice; it's a lot of work for less benefit than full fire. He also uses a Legion Jewel to gain massive attack speed from Int/Dex nodes, potentially allowing him to drop a rage ascendancy for Defy Fate.
Tuna's Build
Tuna's build offers easy progression. Both he and Fub opt for full fire conversion, avoiding Trinity. They also use the Doryani Legion Jewel with Divine Shield to mitigate physical damage and Echoes of Creation self-damage. Since the jewel is in a cluster start zone, any cheap one works, unlike Phaze's min-maxing.
Fubgun's Build
Fub's build prioritizes instant leech with an instant leech mastery and an FF set for 90% max res. He also suggests anointing Winter Spirit for chills, boosting damage and defense with Yoke of Suffering, assuming high base damage ensures chills.
Defensive Layer Comparison
Tuna uses suppression as his main defense. He achieves this with two 3-passive Elegant Form small clusters (25% effect), tier 1 suppression on two items, and a crafted 10% on his chest. While this requires hybrid bases (slightly less armor), suppression is incredibly strong.
All three builds are viable; your choice depends on your preferred playstyle and whether you prioritize progression ease or optimization.

As long as out-of-atlas mechanics exist, they're going to be better than the atlas early on. They had one league worth of development each, which means their progression windows are much shorter and you can approach the soft caps on efficiency quicker. Heist Sanctum and Delve all really have no place in the game, and as long as they exist you're a fool for not doing them in a trade league.

Reminder that you can play ANY melee skill you want, so long as it's melee and your damage is elemental. All builds have access to 100% FREE 200% ele pen with almost no investment. With 200% ele pen you can play literally any skill with EO and do enough damage.
If you don't want to do that then you can play any skill you want, as long as it's a lightning skill or archmage. You will be setting enemy lightning res to negative 200% with Doryani's Prototype.

Then you need to get some phys conversion, better armor/evasion rolls on gear, phys reduction on chest, etc. The goal is to try to farm until you can get to Champ and then get a ton of fortify which basically solves everything.
Until then, 8 endurance charges and ~20-30k Armor/Evasion will make you tankier than 95% of starter builds since regular mobs will barely do anything.
