You capture the normals of the higher detailed model and apply it to the lower poly model. This is how hard edges can look rounded, faces get better shading from tighter topology normals, and you can add details like line paneling and bumps and divets that aren't actually in the model.

The biggest problem is that it's non-standardized and has become a frankenstein of features that don't necessarily play well even within the engine itself. It's good if you can hire 20 different people to each specialize on just one small section of the engine, but if not, it's like you'll have to learn 20 different software suites. AAA and AA studios might prefer it because plenty of universities have been bribed into teaching courses with UE, making hiring easy.

And because one person typically only masters one specific area of the engine. So it doesn't matter if you're an animator who doesn't understand niagara. All you need to know is animation blueprints.
The compartmentalization is a good thing for teams. But yeah for indies it feels like everything is menus within menus and you have to learn a lot to even get started.

Very high upfront time investment to learn how to work with it or even where to start because like the other guy said it's all hidden behind menus and you have to setup an IDE for programming. Also buggy as shit with no indication as to where it went wrong; my little test project was working months ago, I didn't change anything and now it's not working and the engine won't tell me why, just says it failed to launch.

Godot is a pile of shit, but it gets you results really quickly and since there's barely anything in it there's not much to go wrong*

*this only applies to 4.2 and earlier, everything post 4.2 has been an absolute disaster and the trannys refuse to ack-knowledge how bad it's getting

Well, I think I'm done with the VR compatibility.
Most of the work was to revamp how inputs and UI layout worked to keep the code from getting too dirty, but it's in a good-enough state now.

Your game doesn't get that kind of crowd. What is it 99% males and 1% females? And it's also impossible for Marnix to clone it unless he's can get the whole team onboard.

It's simple take down the game, make a whole new one under a genre women play. Find one that cosplays. Ask her to cosplay while cooking for you. If she does, marry her. Just like that you can have your wife cosplay as Bocchi.

I took the advice I was given last thread. No ngons, but there's a problem. Any time I try to remove one of the extra vertices, the entire edge goes with it and I cannot create another without it being entirely detached from the mesh.

don't delete anything
add edge loops that circle around the head and connect together in the back to keep the model symmetrical
the correct way to do it is:
1. start super low poly and let n-gons happen
2. cleanup and find all ngons
3. lastly add edgeloops around the back to keep the model essentially the same while removing all the ngons and increasing the polycount by a little bit

if you can't stand increasing the polycount, instead you can turn n-gons into triangle+quad.
when you do that, just pay attention and make sure you don't make strange-looking concave quads.

nah. batches are just groupings of instruction sets sent from the CPU to the GPU for drawcalls. batches are not created equal, so the number on its own is meaningless.

Things like: how many vertices? what is your method of optimize (ie - do you use SRP batch? static batch?)? are you on a physics heavy simulation? are there many shared materials and shaders within your scene?

For note - some levels on my game have 15k batches, 10s of millions of vertices. Still maintain 60 fps on a 3060. On the build, still easily maintain that on a i5 4460 + 1050 ti.

BUT! This will also depend on which is the target platform you wish to build for, as certain optimize techniques are impossible on certain hardwares (primarily for things like the nintendo switch 1)

4.3 has broken multithreading for the navigation server ( some tranny thought that it would be a good idea to write lock the main thread while the nav server was doing it's thing because their tranny game was generating nav meshes in real time and then pushed it onto the public release because no one in the godot team has the time to double check anything).

100% true. My justification was that my school and work life were in good standing, so I could spend my free time competing. I enjoyed it, and it never overtook my responsibilities, although my social life did suffer because of it. I can easily see how you could slip into a 12 hour grinding session and abandon your responsibilities. The hardest part of PvP games was being able to end on a loss when your play time is over. I noticed this helps you improve your skills faster as well, since instead of going autopilot and grinding for hours every day, you let your brain process the information while you're sleeping or doing something else, so when you return, you make the correct decisions much faster.
Play a few games, maybe 2 hours maximum on a good day, and then get back to being responsible. Take a few days off every now and then, and notice substantial skill improvements when you return. Gif related. It takes time for skill to develop.
I wouldn't suggest most people get into PvP games. It takes too much discipline to not ruin your life.

since i'm unemployed i basically spent every waking hour working on them, either directly or through planning/refactoring/analyzing
it took a lot of effort, but if you have nothing else to do, you can get a lot done in a relatively short amount of time
that's honestly the main reason why i'm scared of being forced to get a job again, a 4 month dev cycle would easily turn into 8+ months if i can't focus on it full time

Waging is shaping up to be something. But starting tomorrow and over the weekend I'll be having days off, time I can now dedicate to what matters. Including dev stuff. Tonight was a bit of a late night prelude to the absolute marathon I plan on committing within the next three days, which'll hopefully make up for the dumpster excuse of "progress" I have missed out on in the past two days due to negligence and weakness.

Anyways I seem to have a more defined system now, I'm following three tutorials essentially in a cycle. Also helps with burnout. I follow one tutorial to learn C++ with Ue5, one tutorial for animating within Blender, and another for also modeling within Blender.

Besides that the most important part is that I also give time for working within the Engine myself, for example right now I am creating a 3D character controller that's third-person; and have created a specific outline for what I want in said controller, starting with no-delay upon acceleration, etc.

Time spent between all these endeavors with due-dates and goals given to myself are sure to mean progress in the coming months.
