I'll do it. I'll make a game. You'll see.

If only I was good at this :(
im making a singleplayer card game like yugioh, do you guys have a better idea for a framework of difficulty progression:
minion(1), minion(2), minion(3), boss(6), minion(4), minion(5), minion(6), boss(12), etc
I'm pretty sure you need difficulty spikes to keep it interesting, but im unsure about anything else
>>527267091Although they exist in the game world they are not portrayed as religion tends to be too controversial.
>>527267091none of my characters have noses so its impossible to tell

>>527267882Sounds like a good thing to me
I've been working on UI, and just overall functionality for so long (when y is changed, also update z and x), that now that I'm working on actual game play logic I feel a desire to rush it. Almost like it's un-important. I need to fight that urge and remember that this is the actual game part of the game.
my game is not a porn game. i'm writing lore for it right now and one of the civilizations is very big into necromancy and using the deceased spirits from the spirit world for their magical rites. i came up with the idea that they put in a lot of effort to appease the spirits of the spirit world which are in high concentration around them to stop them from growing restless and causing mayhem both by giving them gifts, performing rituals and that priests/priestesses also summon a conglomeration of multiple spirits into a single male or female body to have sex with them to appease them. is this too strange to have as part of a game's lore? it won't ever be shown happening in game

Godot devs, how do implement leaning in an FPS? I understand enough to work the camera part of it, peeking left or right with rotation and all, but I don't understand how I'm supposed to
>Have my characters body pivot at the waist to lean
>Have the camera where his head is
>Have the hotbox peek as well so you can still be shot but less of you is exposed
I can make my capsule lean but I don't know how to apply all of this to an actual character.
Do you need a pivot node at their waist sort of like how you place a 'head' Node3D?
Do I just animate my character leaning both ways first and then line up my camera transforms and hitboxes with that animation?
Lean bros... Help...
>>527269414the left BUT black out some lines on the back like on the right
>>527269414The right shadow is too extreme on the head. I noticed that with the armpit on a previous thread. It's like 100% thick shadow or nothing. Ease up a bit. Not an artist though. It just looks odd, like why is that hat strap thing 100% blacked out, when the lighting looks so bright on the face.
>>527269414left obviously looks better, and take that stick out of his mouth and make him look more professional.
>>527270346> that stick out of his mouthThe horsewhip is an integral part of the character
>>527268789No, it makes sense.
>>527269414hard to read both. the stylistic shadows are being paired with a pretty bad silhouette, for such shadows you need a clear read. squint and can you tell what him limbs are doing?
anyway, pure black shadows could be broken up more, given more definitive shapes not just timidly outlining things.

Just hire a Hollywood star for your humble indie project
>>527270846He must really like riding horses
>>527269776Yes, you need a pivot node for your camera, you shouldn't move it on its own.
Position the pivot node around the waist and rotate that.
just pivot.rotation_degrees.z = lerp(pivot.rotation_degrees.z, direction * lean_amount, leaning_speed)
where direction is left or right, -1 or 1.
>>527269414They both look like shit and your "style" lacks
>>527271189Thanks anon
I already have a Head pivot node that holds my camera, the fps arms etc.
Should my Head pivot be a child of the Waist pivot?
And when I bring my model in, do I pivot the bone above the waist or should I just run an animation and move the hitboxes and shit with code?
Use AI generated animations to make sims like game. Thats my idea of a game.
>grab a model off the web
>plenty of AI generated animations
>???
>profit
Let me add that AI does all the programming too
>>527271604nigga you crazy
>>527271604It doesn't animate.
>>527272021https://youtu.be/Z4Opncoomd4
>>527271490I'm not sure about the model stuff and not sure about your setup either but yeah the head is naturally affected by waist rotation so you should do that. As for the hitbox, it's gonna be more complicated because collisionshape needs to be a direct child of the body, you might have to rotate it on its own. Think of it like this: you should always seperate logic from rendering, and not couple them together.
I just really sort of don't wanna.
>>527272146Oh I misread, you're saying just buy premade animations. Makes sense.
I haven't worked with 3d. So now that you have this animation, how do you put a skin on it?

I need a break from my game, so I'm going to make a short Foddian game to break up the monotony. The game is purely based on the wordplay of a mishearing of a famous quote from a movie.
i went outside and a crooked old man had the tiniest little shit dog on a leash, one of those scottish mustache dogs. it pulls slightly towards me as i walk past him on the street and barks and he just screams "NOOOOOOOOOOOO" at the top of his lungs and acts like he's fighting some powerful beast when trying to hold on to the leash with both hands, then he raises one hand up high into the air and open palm smacks the dog hard on the head. funniest and most evil shit i've seen today

This sounds a lot like the 80/20 principle, where 80% of the progress is done with 20% of the work, whole the remaining 20% of the progress takes 80% of the work
>>527278294heh. yeah. I guess this means ctesiphon is near completion, right?
>>527278416From the sounds of it, the first 80% of his progress was done with no more than 20% of the work. With only 20% of the progress remaining, its the unfortunate to find he has 80% of the work to go...

Where people went wrong, is they tried to be funny as the non caring, ironically unfunny guy. "Hey man, whatever man, I guess man." As if they were above having to tell jokes. That no joke was the joke and if you're smart you're in on it. But there wasn't anything actually there. That was an annoying era.
>>527282171No. napoleon dynamite and flight of the concords era comedy was so bad because it was way too earnest. I was forced to watch juno earliest this year for the first time and it was awful. If someone said, "on my science!" in that movie completely unironically I wouldn't be surprised.

For full screen UIs you usually have a background element that stretches but the UI elements are anchored to the center of the screen.

i think the mind endlessly searches for problems and a state of "peace of mind" is not real. that's like asking for "peace of body". your body wants movement and your mind wants movement.
you always need new problems.
the thing is if problems are too easy it'll bore you, if they are too hard it'll frustrate you.
also your mind doesn't care that you need money, it just wants a well balanced challenge.
that's why video games are addictive. that's why video game are boring if they don't present problems.
the real "solution" to feeling bad is to give your mind and body the right amount of challenge every day. that's why being rich makes you happy, cause now you can justify the challenge completely based on your needs and not what you need to do to make money.

>>527295731The more I listen to Tim Cain the more I think he’s a turbo normie who got lucky. He got lucky that his artist randomly thought of the 1950’s look. If I give Tim any credit it’s that he believed in player freedom. But really if you listen to him, it’s like 99% by the numbers type of thinking. It’s all very logic oriented. And he’ll say things like “fun comes before x or y” but then you look at his games and it’s like, where the fuck is the fun here? He seems more obsessed with just having multiple builds be viable. But again that’s not creative, that’s just a feature. Like ok I believe this car should have a cup holder. That’s fine. But a hundred other cars have that too. Then he obsesses over complex turn based combat and again I’m just thinking where the fuck is the fun in this. And it’s fine to be niche. But even on a niche game I just can’t see him ever making or being apart of a great game again.
He would counter this by saying Outer Worlds sold a shit load. And it’s like ya, it’s a very by the numbers game. It’s a good high budget game. But completely forgettable.

Eric Barone is clearly one of the best game devs of our gen. But I do worry his next game will focus too much on combat (which is his weakest area by FAR).
Eric's Stardew is genius because there are just so many options for the player. He really does focus on fun. I can't even really think of a close second. Nintendo overall deserves respect for always innovating. They often miss hard, but then snap back to the right spot. Maybe the Dward Fortress bros.
I wish I had a teammate. Some dude to bullshit with during the day, share the experience with.
>>527298674>stealing and scaming is much easier ways to make money than a honest workthat's a lie lazy people came up with to justify never putting effort into anything constructive. In reality it's a complete fail
>>527298187IDK I haven't played any of his games lol. He's a more of narrative-driven designer rather than a gameplay-driven designer, which apparently plenty of players appreciate. I'm more of the kind of gamer to enjoy the kinds of games he doesn't like, e.g. PoE, but I can still appreciate his way of thinking. It's probably just a more feminine design philosophy, being the fag he is.

>>527298187I’ve played Fallout and Arcanum. I mean, the amount of people who find this "fun" is certainly limited, but these games do have some of the biggest player freedom / potential for discovery. There’s a myriad of subplots which you may explore or ignore, and often there exists the possibility of getting a "wrong" / unsatisfying outcome. Obviously the Infinite Engine games are similar, but I think on average they have more linear paths and quests, basic D&D "go and kill those monsters" style. When I played Arcanum as a kid I kept traveling between all those cities trying to unravel a couple mysteries and just couldn’t figure them out.
>>527298893>Eric Barone is clearly one of the best game devs of our gen.Toby Fox is better

>>527325207No. He's right. If you've done any real front-end work, you'll realize that all game engine UI systems are shit compared to any web stack. e.g. Godot's UI system is imperative, meaning you have to manually create tweens for every little transition yourself, while in a declarative system like CSS, all you need to do is say that you want a transition for any property and whenever you change those properties, transition tween are automatically computed. Even for things that appear to be responsive, such as Container and anchor sizing, it doesn't process immediately, so you have to sprinkle in these dumb little "await get_tree().process_frame" calls here and there.
>>527326663It's the opposite. Web stack is dogshit tier usability wise and even worse for performance.

Newsflash, most people who make games on 4chan are crusty autistic old fucks who can't stand to play anything except mobile games anymore. They aren't your audience and they can't play a game no matter what it is. Taking their advice or feedback is like taking a man's feedback on a brand of tampons

Real question, why do AAA cultists even bother to come to this general? If you have such a strong preference for games why don't you just go to a forum full of people like you where you would feel at home and wouldn't feel the need to rage against a system that can't accommodate your psychotic tastes?

>>527337697Because there's a very small subset of gamers who were left behind by the mainstream industry but couldn't come to terms with indie games and appreciate them for their strengths. They are interested in indies insofar as they believe that indies are supposed to be just a AAA lite that's counter-cultural enough to pander to them instead of women and gays. So every time they are confronted with indie games that do their own thing instead of trying to be normie slop they start throwing a meltie because they want the III games to be made for them. They don't want small games or story games. They want some kind of alt-AAA game they can sip monster to remembering the Xbox days

i think its going to be one where your'e the stepfather to a naughty thicc mother and her 9 year old daughter (3 year old second daughter optional) and you help grow her instagram while also getting closer to both of them
so at the start the daughter doesnt talk to you but it gets so cute, eventually she gives you your first kiss on the lips and starts calling you daddy

I'm trying to use Anchors in Unity. I have a Top header/bar/navbar or whatever that I don't want anything to ever cover. It's on every screen in the game. The problem I have is that anchors seem to override vertical layout settings. Like typically in a vertical layout, the top item is always on top of the bottom. But if I set the anchor of the gameobject with the background on it to StretchxStretch, it'll ALWAYS cover my header. Anyone know how to solve this?
To recap, the header bar gets covered by gameobjects set to stretch out. I want the header to not only cover everything, but for things to resize appropriately based on the header.

Most horror games don't convert.
There are thousands of games on Manlybadasshero/John Wolfe's channel that got millions of views but sold fuck all.
>>527345605I don't even know what you do in kyoto anomoly and I've seen minutes of footage by now. what are the verbs? walk... ??
>>527345879They don't convert because they're linear experiences.
>>527345901Yeah, basically. Anomaly games are like 'walk down this corridor, if you see a misspelling on a sign before you reach the exit, turn back and use the other exit or you'll get jumpscared and lose'. That's it. That's the entire game. Spot the fucking difference.
>>527345901I didn't get it until I watched a friend play Exit 8 and then the concept clicked for me.
It's basically PT with the looping changing hallway gimmick except your job is to spot if it changed and go back if it did.
The thing that sucks about all the anomaly games I've seen (especially Marnix's) is that they don't try to be scary. At most they get a bit weird. I want an anomaly game that goes full spook.
I'm doing analytics research for my game and I found out something neat
If I rank all games similar to mine (tags) from the last year and a half based on follower count, right now I stand perfectly and exactly on the dividing point between two clearly separated categories of games
All of the games below mine fluctuate wildly between 0 and 500 dollars in revenue but never go above that, while all games above me in followers never go below 500 dollars in revenue and majority of them are much higher.
This might mean I'm guaranteed that I can't flop completely, which is reassuring. An airtight pattern like that doesn't just break for no reason.
