Shadow the Hedgehog as a game is one of the most emotionally impactful entries I've ever read.
I make a habit of watching oscar-winning films. I don't think I'm a deep genius on the subject of storytelling, but I am no stranger to critically acclaimed stories held in high regard by people who make a living criticizing stories with heavy theming.
With all of that in mind, I find the concept that "Sonic is the wind" to be extremely compelling. Right up there with Scorsese's raging bull in capturing a fascinating idea that we aren't really meant to relate to.

Sonic's dynamic with Amy is his dynamic with the concept of love and romance as a whole, period. Sonic is too "free as the wind" to ever have been with anyone in that kind of capacity. Elise is the example for what a more "normal" girl interacting with Sonic looks like, and it never went beyond vaguely romantic moments in the forest and a kiss before he leaves and never looks back.

Sonic Heroes is to Amy what Black Knight is to Sonic, in my opinion. Characterization-wise.
