I'm doing analytics research for my game and I found out something neat
If I rank all games similar to mine (tags) from the last year and a half based on follower count, right now I stand perfectly and exactly on the dividing point between two clearly separated categories of games

All of the games below mine fluctuate wildly between 0 and 500 dollars in revenue but never go above that, while all games above me in followers never go below 500 dollars in revenue and majority of them are much higher.
This might mean I'm guaranteed that I can't flop completely, which is reassuring. An airtight pattern like that doesn't just break for no reason..

>The thing that sucks about all the anomaly games I've seen (especially Marnix's) is that they don't try to be scary. At most they get a bit weird. I want an anomaly game that goes full spook.
This is what absolutely baffles me. You're ALREADY stealing from PT, so just steal the actual fucking horror parts too.

Also noticed: Every game that is ranked above mine in followers but has less than 2k in estimated revenue has a very obvious reason for being so. They are all some variation of co-op horror, point and click, or walking sim, which are tags I don't share with them. The rest of them mostly have over 10k in revenue

Truthfully I'm not even 100% sure what you're fighting yet.
I know it's going to be a Resi style game with shooting, inventory management, etc so I went ahead and started working on all that.
The actual theming alludes me still.

I'm trying to use Anchors in Unity. I have a Top header/bar/navbar or whatever that I don't want anything to ever cover. It's on every screen in the game. The problem I have is that anchors seem to override vertical layout settings. Typically in a vertical layout, the top gameobject is always on top of the bottom. But if I set the anchor of the gameobject with the background on it to StretchxStretch, it'll ALWAYS cover my header. Anyone know how to solve this?

I can have the header maintain the correct height and width, it's in the correct location, but the stretchxstretch of the other gameobject will always take over the width and height of the container, ignoring the header, totally covering it up, despite being in a vertical layout.

The single most important thing PT did, was direct you towards the horror and tell you to walk towards it. I'm surprised more horror games don't do this.

You could find out how much your game is going to make way faster by releasing it. What's the point of these analytics, your game is too far along enough to change it if it was a walking sim for example.

One thing it did poorly imo was make the puzzles impossible to figure out. At certain point I stopped being scared and just annoyed. Like ya, ok, I'm dead again, great, don't care. But I do admit it was fucking horrific.

It worked really really well for what it was, in terms of, turning what could've been a ten minute demo you play through once and forget into a days-long community-driven EVENT that is stuck in people's heads to this day. I think if it the full game played that way with the puzzles, it would've gone down quite badly, but specifically for a demo I think it was the right call.

I tried, but it didn't really seem to do anything. The height wasn't the issue I don't think because I could see the header height behind the other gameobject. But ya, I set preferred height and flexible height to 0. Layout priority 1. Then on the lower object I put Layout priority to 0, I'm not really sure what the does because I flipped it once and it didn't seem to do anything, and flexible height to 1.

To be clear I'm new to anchors so it could be something really stupid.

That's true with most horror games really. People acclimate to the horror rather quick and within a couple hours you're just playing a slow paced adventure game. It's why a lot of the most effective horror games are games with a small bit of horror thrown in instead of games dedicated solely to making you scared.

Replying to self. I think I'm just going to have to do it programmatically. If I can get everything to just lower by the height of the navbar, then I might be able to hack around all the other issues. There doesn't seem to be a way to get this working through the Rect Transform Inspector alone.

are you using the newer UI system, or the legacy one? The legacy one is really fucky when it comes to anchors. new one is called UI Toolkit (I think, I haven't used it much since my game is using legacy)

In regard to not being covered (assuming this is legacy you're using), you can re-order the UI elements that are children of the canvas, as well as things like sorting order or sorting priority.
IIRC unity has built in solutions for overriding the sort priority, but I just built my own.

So I got a bunch of really cheap tablets to repair and I got one of them to work. 2019 amazon kindles. I thought it would be recent enough to use for game dev, since I can get APKs working on shitty phones easily. Wrong. For some reason Amazon blocks tablets from using the app store every couple of years, and they cannot install fucking shit. There are blocks set in place to prevent them from downloading apps officially under new accounts to force people to buy the new tablets. Putting the APK on the tablet itself doesn't install even after editing the code to lower the requirements. The same APK can install on a 10 year old phone. The same fucking APK works on a 20 dollar phone from dollar general.

What the fuck is Amazon's problem?

FL studio.
Learn ARPS at first and study music along with music theory. You really don't need to know much about music theory, more that everything is better with a certain structure, and certain tones are done a certain way.
Follow channels like synthet for smaller tips.
Download a bunch of free VSTs.
Maybe purchase some VSTs. There are so many paid VSTs it's hard to find good ones.

Naw, it's harder in a game. The stakes for the guild leader might be lower, but the stakes for the members/employees are also lower. Turnover is horrendous because all you have to motivate your guildies are the powers of love, friendship, and some pixels. Meanwhile, IRL managers can offer cold hard cash.

Right now I'm making a webgl renderer which divides rendering in to one draw call for every model which appears in the scene once, and another set of draw calls for every mesh which exists in count 2 or more in the scene. I'd like to use WEBGL_multi_draw to draw every model in one draw call, but firefox doesn't have this, and probably won't have it. After I get this renderer working, I will create a second renderer which uses multi_draw.

The single model draw call needs to get a model instance id in to the shader. Can't use uniforms, can't use textures (because I have no index into a texture). I'm going to have the asset id baked in to the vert data, and this will be the index to a small texture, which will contain an offset value: This offset value will be the index to a large texture, which will hold transform matrices, diffuse/normal texture locations, and bone count and deformation data.

The single model draw call can get model instance id's in to the shader easily with an instance buffer.

Will this be more performant than three or babylon? I'll find out.

idk, I got piano lessons from 5 until 10, then got into guitar and synthesizers when I was around 14. I'm kind of a retard and have that brain defect that lets me see sounds as a bunch of colours and shapes, so idk. I just pick whatever looks good.

basic music theory helps with writing. I won't spell it out for you because the best way to learn music theory is to understand the fundamentals, and then see how you can apply it in your own style
learn things like:
>triads
>chord inversions
>scales, which note is major, which is minor. which notes benefit from things like add, sus, etc
>what is voice leading

think of music theory as building blocks rather than a rigid set of rules.

for writing original songs, what helped me was a combination of throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks plus doing cover versions of other songs that have a similar feel to what I would like to go for.
doing covers helps you go through the process of arranging and then recording a song without having to think about the writing element of it (I stole this from writer hunter thompson who did it with writing books, but it applies to music as well)

Then there are the tricks. Think of songs that do something that sounds really cool to you, and learn how to recreate it. Congratulations, you have a new musical trick up your sleeve.
That channel synthet mentioned by another anon is full of production tricks

finally, simplicity and limitations are key. A lot of people, especially now with DAWs offering limitless possibilities, feel like they can always keep adding more.
Ideally, your song will sound good and cohesive played by a single instrument. If your song sounds good with the "meat" of it played on a single piano, you're on the right track.

This tech is a scam and a huge nvidia grift.

And I'm already burned 5 times so far being hyped for AI imbeciles that this newer model will be a new revolution.

And yet, 4 years later and It still can't make me HD 2D anime sprites.

It took me less time and effort to actually get better in blender to make them, than trying to use AI to make what I want.

This tech is just a 1girl, solo porn generator without any other artistic use except child pornography and memes.

Learn an instrument (could just be your midi keyboard that you bought to use with a DAW) and then learn how scales (intervals) and chords (triads) are constructed. Then you can improvise for fun until you find a tune that fits what you're looking for. The rest is fucking around in a DAW.

People will say "learn music theory" but that's analogous to saying "learn math". Music theory is very wide and deep and only parts of it are applicable to making beginner tunes.
Here's what you need:
>become familiar with a scale
>become familiar with thinking in terms of scale degrees
>memorize common chord progressions
Then paint the owl.

Nta but I wish I found out much sooner. Did you at least realize what needs to be done to reach the "Yeah my game is GMI!" belief and not simply "It'll do okay, maybe better."

There were obvious patterns with my game and similar games but it wasn't until much more recently that I fully realized it. It simply looks like it's ngmi and just isn't worth continuing development. I have a finite lifespan, I do not want to waste it just to turn that sinking ship around for a best case scenario of around 2000 reviews. It sucks knowing I wasted so much time on a ngmi game.

They probably did it the Quake does it, by sampling the lightmap under the player. You could also do it by tracing lighting to the player, that's how I'm doing my entity lighting. I've backlogged an idea to have this influence how enemies spot you because at the moment LOS is just binary.

My 20% was all in the old Java build from DD14, I'll upload it onto itch near release in November. That had half of the weapons already, enemies, pathfinding. Once I had the melee weapon in I felt the gameplay loop click together.
Apart from rewriting the engine in C/C++ and four years in between on hiatus, other projects, or an abandoned level editor, I've been only doing polish and content ever since.

Modern game-dev is like being an interior designer; you take chairs and tables and portraits that other artisans have made and make them work together with a larger vision and personalized touches.

Sure you could learn how to make furniture yourself, but that's a huge time commitment, and in the end the client won't know the difference.

it's hard to make something yours when the art is made by someone else. you can get a pass if you have amazing gameplay but using generic assets makes it harder for your game to stand out.
you can polish the hell out of it but it'll look like generic unreal 3d game #500. if you make your own models as a programmer it's going to have to look like megaman legends or a psx horror game but worse.
even worse if they recognize one of your playable characters from another game.

Here's the math to find the required sales to profit off of a years worth of gamedev. And *worth* is the key word here, some devs might take 2 years to rack up 2080 hours of work.

>40 Hours per week * 52 weeks = 2080 Hours.
A years work is 2080 hours.
>2080 hours * $12 US minimum wage = $24,960.
Compensation for that work is at least $25,000.

>Profit for each $10 game sold is: 10 * 0.7 * 0.7 = $4.9
>(Steam 30% and tax 30%)
You'll profit $4.9 from each $10 game sold.

>24960 / 4.9 = 5093 copies.
To break even on a years work you need to sell 5093 copies.

Also, the average game on steam gets 2 reviews per 100 copies sold. So:
>5093 * 0.02 = 102 reviews

100 reviews on steam is a good goal for any game.

free idea: i've long thought what wrasslin games need is to make the goal for the player the same as the goal is for real world wrasslers... winning or losing is immaterial, it's all about getting the crowd to chant/boo your name. every wrestling game ive seen at most makes that a taunt for stamina or special move type of thing but is still just a combat game, lame and boring.

Q3: Letโ€™s know a bit about you, Miro. What did you work before focusing on Fear & Hunger? Were there other videogames/projects before this one or you worked in a completely different field?

A3: Ah, wellโ€ฆ I did play around with game developing when I was really young. I found game engines like the RPG Maker and Game Maker among others, but I couldnโ€™t really concentrate on any single project for long and most of the games I made back then died within few weeks or months. I did release a couple of game demos back in the day but unfortunately I donโ€™t have them anymore.

Eventually I drifted away from game development, thinking that there was no future in playing around with simple 2D graphics. Funny enough, right after I quit, the indie gaming exploded so it wasnโ€™t necessarily the best move at the time. Later on I got into graphic designing and I really wanted to make art. Graphic art, music or whatever. There are some album covers around with my art and also some light graphic novels in which I took part. I didnโ€™t really consider game development until I had to get those academic credits from somewhere. I decided to revisit RPG Maker as it was the engine I was the most familiar with. Then people seemed to like the early versions of the F&H and after the first Letโ€™s Plays of the game I was hooked. With games I could fuse together all my interests in different art forms and it was very rewarding to see the immediate reactions Letโ€™s Players had with all the things I had created.

actually lemme fix that
I kinda glossed over 'interior designer' and 'furniture'.

If all gamedev to you is taking an existing project and putting in props then you're right. But in reality gamedev is building the walls and plumbing and floors and everything else except you're building it for artistic purpose instead of functionality, which starts to go really off-track.
The closest thing to that is an escape room, because that's effectively a game. In that case, it absolutely does matter what furniture you put in, because escape rooms usually have themes and using props appropriate for that kind of room is really important. People will eat up the experience anyway but they'll enjoy it far less. They'll know it's slop.

I already posted about it but it's a story focused RPG with turn based combat and QTEs, the main gists of it is that you have spells which have their own damage and difficulty to cast, when you decide to cast a spell a set of arrows appear on screen and you must press the opposite direction, successfully doing so you are able to do damage to your opponent.

Right now I'm a complete fucking idiot monkey who doesn't know how to code but I managed to do a working version, the only issue is that it has zero modularity meaning that I can only make it work for one spell, more than that it becomes super duper hard. So I'm remaking it in a more organized manner.

IQ plays a large role in talent. Other factors include personality traits like agreeableness/openness. Theoretically, these things can be changed, but in practice most people remain red goats and are incapable of growth.

Artists get paid a lot of money because art is not something everybody wants to do at a proficient level. It's like plumbing. Anybody can figure out how to do what plumbers do, but not everybody likes having to deal with toilets or digging underneath houses.

i think it has to do with how i learn things, i was able to learn 3d with a combination of brute force and looking at topology. 2d is a different beast imo. pixel art kind of clicked but i wouldn't count it as 2d.
3d low poly and pixel art are similar in that you can just make something by clicking around and forming a shape. hand drawn needs way more planning and you need to invest in a tablet, it's like 3d scuplting.

A singleton with a method that plays sound effects whether it's by setting a stream on a dedicated node or instantiating a packed scene.
You probably want one for music anyway so it's not a bad method.

Honestly speaking, a lot of posters here really aren't talent enough to really get good at the skill they're crying about. If they work really hard at it for a long time, maybe they can get to a reasonable level that they wouldn't be embarrassed about, but they'll never make it to a commercially competitive level. Assuming you're grassfag, I think you're in that same boat. You've spent a lot of time and have gotten quite far, but neither your art nor music is good enough to be a selling point in a game.

I get to devote my full time to gamedev because it's also my job.
That means I get to develop those skills.
Because it makes money, I can hire people and take things as business expenses.

And, on a site like Steam, the ranking is higher with more sales. More money = more popularity = more exposure.
Even if you don't have a use for the money, it's still the difference between professional and hobbyist.

To go from /beg/ to /int/, you have to learn to draw with your eyes. i.e. Learning how to really draw from reference. A lot of beginners get forever caught up on being "original" or creating their own style. That's how they get stuck as perma/beg/s like Cris. Your main priority should be to learn how to accurately render what you see with your eyes.

That's because animation and keyframes is a whole separate skill you have to learn on top of learning how to draw. I actually have a template of keyframe examples a disney trained artist gave me while we were drinking together at c2e2 and yeah animating is hard.

Tracing doesn't do much for you. You want to get neurons to connect for the task you want to learn, and tracing isn't part of that task. Learn to break images/subjects down into simple shapes, circles, rectangles, triangles. And then build the drawing on top.

he needs to learn marketing, including the "make a game that people actually want" aspect, otherwise he'll stagnate with endless double digit review flops
the fact that he can make so many games so quickly is impressive, even with him using assets, but he doesn't make games people actually want (exit 8 was an outlier, most anomaly games underperform), and he hardly promotes them
marnix has potential to make it, he just needs slightly better market intuition
you can't just pump out slop nobody wants, your games need to be appealing

i started learning art last year. i don't think "just draw more" is good advice, people learn a lot of things way faster if they have direct tutoring and feedback even if the amount of practices are relatively low. i have been doing drawing and 3d practices once a week or once every two weeks.
however it is true you must learn one thing at a time, if you try to rush and make your first drawings convey more than one fundamental you will end up wasting a lot of time and end up dissatisfied with the final work.

I've noticed that the grifters in content creation tend to target children as their main audience. For YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, the biggest money-hungry grifters focus on content geared towards children. They tend to do quite well with enough effort. Similarly for video games, Roblox is heavily geared towards children and many devs on their make incredible revenue.
Why do the indie grifters keep trying their luck on Steam? Would it not be better to focus on a platform with more children on it? They tend to be extremely supportive of low effort "slop" content, so long as it's stimulating.

Should the moneydevs fuck off to Roblox? Or use their gamedev skills to create videos instead, like the skibidi toilet guy?
I really don't think Steam is compatible with the get rich quick "gambling" we see from so many slop devs.

Day 14 on a Thread for Project C-Con โ€“ "Wasted Days" Edition
Journal logs are being posted into /agdg/ daily.

Yeah I have no excuse, shit day in terms of any real progress. I woke up very late and on top of that did stuff (outside of dev-work) until it was basically too late to do anything for C-Con. I did mess around in-engine a bit to see the feasibility of a custom character controller and implementing mechanics/qualities (i.e.: like a static acceleration speed) that reaches max walk-speed right away and deletes all walk-speed right away with no sliding. All of that is going to take work, I'll be further doing that tomorrow and also following the C++ course which I now find interesting.

What is Project C-Con?

Talent is real, however, it can often be a crutch that allows people to surpass you due to your own self confidence.

Just as IQ is real, and there's difference between intelligence with people, and just like being talented in a sport relies on having the correct proportions, strength, bone density, lung capacity, muscle fibers, etc. Talent, in terms of something like art, must have something to do with visualization, hand-eye coordination, visual memory, and other abilities that are more (naturally) developed in that individual than the general population.

Kim Jung Gi's ability, of drawing complex things from imagination alone, without reference, although definitely developed through training on that skill, he almost certainly must have possessed a "talent" that the average artist doesn't have, which allowed him to develop that ability far faster, and with more quality, than most people who will try.

Talent, is largely overrated, unless you genuinely want to be the best of the best due to an ego/pride thing, but any person can probably reach the top of their interest through training for a long time, even if they don't possess a natural ability on it.

for other skills if you keep blaming it on talent it's just some cope for you not practicing enough or practicing the right way (which is where a lot of people fail and think it's talent)

>what about creativity? an artist can be really technical but lack creativity and uniqueness in their art. think of portrait painters for example. creativity is something that can't be taught.

Don't really disagree, but I think that there are things that an artist, who isn't that creative, can do to increase their range (creativity).
Amassing large amounts of reference of other artists, and copying different things from different artist (to create your own style), and doing something similar for the subject matters, can imitate "creativity" in a way.

>>527378169
Don't disagree with you, but there's also other artists who attempt what he did, and fail. Although he was clearly obsessed, which allowed him to develop such a unique ability, he must have also probably possessed "talent" in terms of visual abilities, those being what attracted him to art in the first place.

You can see his drawings as a teen, from imagination, and they are far better than adult artists are able to do after years of practice. He had already developed his own style, and was able to draw from imagination anything.
Not to take away from his obvious dedication and obsession.

>>527378302
Unless you are an artist it will probably be difficult to appreciate what he's able to do.
I, personally, do not find his art to look good either, but I'm just not into "inky" styles. However, his ability, of drawing anything from any angle, with ease, from imagination, is the hardest skill you can learn as an artist, and he doesn't use any construction or almost any sketching, it's really hard and he makes it look easy.

It really comes down to mindset conditioning:
>get made fun of for getting a math question wrong as a child
>now you believe you suck at math
>you don't practice math through your childhood

>get praised for playing a shitty song on your recorder
>now you believe you are 'talented' at music
>you continue practicing music through your childhood

You could have practiced either and become great.

Don't disagree at all that practice, and obsession, trumps over talent every single time.
But "talent" in terms of art MUST exist, just like talent in sports, or things related with IQ, do exist due to more tangible tests that we are able to measure in modern times.
I do completely agree that this advantage is probably minimal, and only accelerates the development for the artist at the very start, or in ways that are able to be imitated by different ways.

too much information overload. of the 3 things for gamedev, i have near 0 interest of learning music or sfx. i can just pay for that. i have more incentive to learn coding or art.

gamedev aspects of each
>art
Can make game look like as I imagine.
>audio
Can make game sound as I envision.
>coding
Can make game play as I desire.
now think real close. if you could only have 2 of these skills improved massively in an instant, which 2 would you pick? i'm sure most anons here would pick art and coding.

Recently got the Arturia V Collection, and some other softwares (Ample Bass TR6, Impact Soundworks Tokyo Scoring Drum kits, and Shreddage Hydra), still haven't gotten to try them tho, too busy still making the models and landscape for the prototype of my game.

I downloaded a bunch of courses of music theory, FL Studio, etc. But there's this guy who streams and uploads good videos https://www.youtube.com/@boyarmira/videos his name is Nick Mira.
He shows the process of how he creates beats, obviously, his style is more for nigga music (rap) but I think that the things he teaches of music theory, and how to use FL Studio, can help anybody looking into it. He's really talented.

i used to make VNs on renpy but tried other engines because i wanted to add "cool stuff" like when characters in a car - a 3d scene keeps going with 3d buildings and stuff like that

But man FUCK THAT....the best thing Renpy gets right - is text and smooth transitions.
it's a hell and so tedious to do that in other engines

>million dolloar solo indie game dev idea: a analogue horror liminal spaces megascructure lovecraftian survival horror immersive sim
i know zoomers use this as a meme
But i genuinely love these genres and always was a fan of them
horror is one of the last thing that im interested in in this slop-driven lame world

Such indie games usually being made by 1 person artist-schizo guy which will never make slop

but my opinion on this is that method overloading is a relic of the past and isn't really needed honestly. It also causes alot of confusion, like seriously the entire premise of it is confusing.

>The games look high quality, at least.
the highest quality ones also have releases on other platforms and may have more success on those platforms, so might not even be as 'hidden' as expected.

Other games feature primitive graphics that don't sell well anymore, or mechanics that are so overdone by now that the market has moved on.
Even the games with better graphics are still somewhat amateurish or lack uniqueness.

Since the games shown here mostly have a somewhat acceptable number of reviews for solodev games (500 reviews on a solodev game is pretty great, especially if you haven't put out a lot of games) there's just a lot of games that aren't amateurish but aren't really truly professional either. It's a weird sort of limbo where they can't meet modern standards.

High quality indie games that received mediocre results because they're based on games that were successful nearly a decade ago. I get it. Although the games were made well, why would people want to play them, when the games they're based on were popular 5-10 years ago, and have already been thoroughly enjoyed? Just a bit late, it seems. I hope the developers at least made enough money to cover the development costs. This is why I think analyzing market trends is important. Some games can be good, but simply won't be enjoyed by the majority of the potential audience, because they've already played games like these before. Novelty is extremely important. The saddest part is that although they're great for indie games, as you said, they're still inferior to 3A games. Stuck in a limbo of "It's good, but meh. I'm alright".

High quality for an indie game or a game made by one person.
They still don't compare at all to proper studio games or games made by very experienced people. I'd say that's part of the challenge of making a successful game but game studios are also struggling.
