I'm doing analytics research for my game and I found out something neat
If I rank all games similar to mine (tags) from the last year and a half based on follower count, right now I stand perfectly and exactly on the dividing point between two clearly separated categories of games
All of the games below mine fluctuate wildly between 0 and 500 dollars in revenue but never go above that, while all games above me in followers never go below 500 dollars in revenue and majority of them are much higher.
This might mean I'm guaranteed that I can't flop completely, which is reassuring. An airtight pattern like that doesn't just break for no reason..
where are the wizard gayms ?
>>527346473https://vginsights.com/ might be useful for this
>The thing that sucks about all the anomaly games I've seen (especially Marnix's) is that they don't try to be scary. At most they get a bit weird. I want an anomaly game that goes full spook.
This is what absolutely baffles me. You're ALREADY stealing from PT, so just steal the actual fucking horror parts too.
>>527346473>>527346534Also noticed: Every game that is ranked above mine in followers but has less than 2k in estimated revenue has a very obvious reason for being so. They are all some variation of co-op horror, point and click, or walking sim, which are tags I don't share with them. The rest of them mostly have over 10k in revenue
>>527345272Truthfully I'm not even 100% sure what you're fighting yet.
I know it's going to be a Resi style game with shooting, inventory management, etc so I went ahead and started working on all that.
The actual theming alludes me still.
>>527347138>here's this cat>he's a geisha that is scale up a little
I'm trying to use Anchors in Unity. I have a Top header/bar/navbar or whatever that I don't want anything to ever cover. It's on every screen in the game. The problem I have is that anchors seem to override vertical layout settings. Typically in a vertical layout, the top gameobject is always on top of the bottom. But if I set the anchor of the gameobject with the background on it to StretchxStretch, it'll ALWAYS cover my header. Anyone know how to solve this?
I can have the header maintain the correct height and width, it's in the correct location, but the stretchxstretch of the other gameobject will always take over the width and height of the container, ignoring the header, totally covering it up, despite being in a vertical layout.
The single most important thing PT did, was direct you towards the horror and tell you to walk towards it. I'm surprised more horror games don't do this.
>>527346473>>527347246You could find out how much your game is going to make way faster by releasing it. What's the point of these analytics, your game is too far along enough to change it if it was a walking sim for example.
>>527347506You have a 'Layout Element' on the object?
>>527347557One thing it did poorly imo was make the puzzles impossible to figure out. At certain point I stopped being scared and just annoyed. Like ya, ok, I'm dead again, great, don't care. But I do admit it was fucking horrific.
>>527347731There's still some time before it's finished. I want some hard facts. I've been working for too long for no reward.
>>527347813It worked really really well for what it was, in terms of, turning what could've been a ten minute demo you play through once and forget into a days-long community-driven EVENT that is stuck in people's heads to this day. I think if it the full game played that way with the puzzles, it would've gone down quite badly, but specifically for a demo I think it was the right call.
>>527347776I tried, but it didn't really seem to do anything. The height wasn't the issue I don't think because I could see the header height behind the other gameobject. But ya, I set preferred height and flexible height to 0. Layout priority 1. Then on the lower object I put Layout priority to 0, I'm not really sure what the does because I flipped it once and it didn't seem to do anything, and flexible height to 1.
To be clear I'm new to anchors so it could be something really stupid.
>my hand when Haunted Chocolatier's world will be bigger than Stardew Valley's
>>527347968What do you gain from this though you're too far along to change anything so now you're wasting your Friday stimming over money you've not yet made.
You think you're a real hotshot analyser but you're just an autistic idiot counting his chickens before they hatch
>>527348231Because I know my game is gonna make it but have no revenue to prove it to my brain, so I have to convince it somehow so it doesn't burn out
>>527347813That's true with most horror games really. People acclimate to the horror rather quick and within a couple hours you're just playing a slow paced adventure game. It's why a lot of the most effective horror games are games with a small bit of horror thrown in instead of games dedicated solely to making you scared.

In regard to not being covered (assuming this is legacy you're using), you can re-order the UI elements that are children of the canvas, as well as things like sorting order or sorting priority.
IIRC unity has built in solutions for overriding the sort priority, but I just built my own.

So I got a bunch of really cheap tablets to repair and I got one of them to work. 2019 amazon kindles. I thought it would be recent enough to use for game dev, since I can get APKs working on shitty phones easily. Wrong. For some reason Amazon blocks tablets from using the app store every couple of years, and they cannot install fucking shit. There are blocks set in place to prevent them from downloading apps officially under new accounts to force people to buy the new tablets. Putting the APK on the tablet itself doesn't install even after editing the code to lower the requirements. The same APK can install on a 10 year old phone. The same fucking APK works on a 20 dollar phone from dollar general.

>>527352845Right now I'm making a webgl renderer which divides rendering in to one draw call for every model which appears in the scene once, and another set of draw calls for every mesh which exists in count 2 or more in the scene. I'd like to use WEBGL_multi_draw to draw every model in one draw call, but firefox doesn't have this, and probably won't have it. After I get this renderer working, I will create a second renderer which uses multi_draw.
The single model draw call needs to get a model instance id in to the shader. Can't use uniforms, can't use textures (because I have no index into a texture). I'm going to have the asset id baked in to the vert data, and this will be the index to a small texture, which will contain an offset value: This offset value will be the index to a large texture, which will hold transform matrices, diffuse/normal texture locations, and bone count and deformation data.
The single model draw call can get model instance id's in to the shader easily with an instance buffer.
Will this be more performant than three or babylon? I'll find out.

basic music theory helps with writing. I won't spell it out for you because the best way to learn music theory is to understand the fundamentals, and then see how you can apply it in your own style
learn things like:
>triads>chord inversions>scales, which note is major, which is minor. which notes benefit from things like add, sus, etc>what is voice leadingthink of music theory as building blocks rather than a rigid set of rules.
for writing original songs, what helped me was a combination of throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks plus doing cover versions of other songs that have a similar feel to what I would like to go for.
doing covers helps you go through the process of arranging and then recording a song without having to think about the writing element of it (I stole this from writer hunter thompson who did it with writing books, but it applies to music as well)
Then there are the tricks. Think of songs that do something that sounds really cool to you, and learn how to recreate it. Congratulations, you have a new musical trick up your sleeve.
That channel synthet mentioned by another anon is full of production tricks
finally, simplicity and limitations are key. A lot of people, especially now with DAWs offering limitless possibilities, feel like they can always keep adding more.
Ideally, your song will sound good and cohesive played by a single instrument. If your song sounds good with the "meat" of it played on a single piano, you're on the right track.
>>527353176that's nice but it sort of just leaves you hanging after this little tutorial
>>527354141I mean music is all about personal expression and experimentation anyway. You gotta fuck around with making music for a while before you can really find your groove.

And I'm already burned 5 times so far being hyped for AI imbeciles that this newer model will be a new revolution.
And yet, 4 years later and It still can't make me HD 2D anime sprites.

>>527353106Learn an instrument (could just be your midi keyboard that you bought to use with a DAW) and then learn how scales (intervals) and chords (triads) are constructed. Then you can improvise for fun until you find a tune that fits what you're looking for. The rest is fucking around in a DAW.
>asking people who to make music
no wonder so many people here have shitty art, ya'll need to ask how to be creative lmfao.
>>527353106People will say "learn music theory" but that's analogous to saying "learn math". Music theory is very wide and deep and only parts of it are applicable to making beginner tunes.

>>527363039How far is your nearest park? It can't be more than 10 minutes away.
Here's the math to find the required sales to profit off of a years worth of gamedev. And *worth* is the key word here, some devs might take 2 years to rack up 2080 hours of work.
>40 Hours per week * 52 weeks = 2080 Hours.
A years work is 2080 hours.
>2080 hours * $12 US minimum wage = $24,960.
Compensation for that work is at least $25,000.
>Profit for each $10 game sold is: 10 * 0.7 * 0.7 = $4.9
>(Steam 30% and tax 30%)
You'll profit $4.9 from each $10 game sold.
>24960 / 4.9 = 5093 copies.
To break even on a years work you need to sell 5093 copies.
Also, the average game on steam gets 2 reviews per 100 copies sold. So:
>5093 * 0.02 = 102 reviews
100 reviews on steam is a good goal for any game.

Q3: Letโs know a bit about you, Miro. What did you work before focusing on Fear & Hunger? Were there other videogames/projects before this one or you worked in a completely different field?
A3: Ah, wellโฆ I did play around with game developing when I was really young. I found game engines like the RPG Maker and Game Maker among others, but I couldnโt really concentrate on any single project for long and most of the games I made back then died within few weeks or months. I did release a couple of game demos back in the day but unfortunately I donโt have them anymore.
Eventually I drifted away from game development, thinking that there was no future in playing around with simple 2D graphics. Funny enough, right after I quit, the indie gaming exploded so it wasnโt necessarily the best move at the time. Later on I got into graphic designing and I really wanted to make art. Graphic art, music or whatever. There are some album covers around with my art and also some light graphic novels in which I took part. I didnโt really consider game development until I had to get those academic credits from somewhere. I decided to revisit RPG Maker as it was the engine I was the most familiar with. Then people seemed to like the early versions of the F&H and after the first Letโs Plays of the game I was hooked. With games I could fuse together all my interests in different art forms and it was very rewarding to see the immediate reactions Letโs Players had with all the things I had created.
I want to make my game look like this.
Gotta work hard to learn how to make this.

If all gamedev to you is taking an existing project and putting in props then you're right. But in reality gamedev is building the walls and plumbing and floors and everything else except you're building it for artistic purpose instead of functionality, which starts to go really off-track.
The closest thing to that is an escape room, because that's effectively a game. In that case, it absolutely does matter what furniture you put in, because escape rooms usually have themes and using props appropriate for that kind of room is really important. People will eat up the experience anyway but they'll enjoy it far less. They'll know it's slop.

>>527367290I already posted about it but it's a story focused RPG with turn based combat and QTEs, the main gists of it is that you have spells which have their own damage and difficulty to cast, when you decide to cast a spell a set of arrows appear on screen and you must press the opposite direction, successfully doing so you are able to do damage to your opponent.
Right now I'm a complete fucking idiot monkey who doesn't know how to code but I managed to do a working version, the only issue is that it has zero modularity meaning that I can only make it work for one spell, more than that it becomes super duper hard. >>527371865That's because animation and keyframes is a whole separate skill you have to learn on top of learning how to draw. I actually have a template of keyframe examples a disney trained artist gave me while we were drinking together at c2e2 and yeah animating is hard.

That's the gist of it.

>>527376279>>527376549Now look at it on a CRT
I've noticed that the grifters in content creation tend to target children as their main audience. For YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, the biggest money-hungry grifters focus on content geared towards children. They tend to do quite well with enough effort. Similarly for video games, Roblox is heavily geared towards children and many devs on their make incredible revenue.
Why do the indie grifters keep trying their luck on Steam? Would it not be better to focus on a platform with more children on it? They tend to be extremely supportive of low effort "slop" content, so long as it's stimulating.
Should the moneydevs fuck off to Roblox? Or use their gamedev skills to create videos instead, like the skibidi toilet guy?
I really don't think Steam is compatible with the get rich quick "gambling" we see from so many slop devs.

Day 14 on a Thread for Project C-Con โ "Wasted Days" Edition
Journal logs are being posted into /agdg/ daily.
Yeah I have no excuse, shit day in terms of any real progress. I woke up very late and on top of that did stuff (outside of dev-work) until it was basically too late to do anything for C-Con. I did mess around in-engine a bit to see the feasibility of a custom character controller and implementing mechanics/qualities (i.e.: like a static acceleration speed) that reaches max walk-speed right away and deletes all walk-speed right away with no sliding. All of that is going to take work, I'll be further doing that tomorrow and also following the C++ course which I now find interesting.
What is Project C-Con?

>>527367910>>527367690Talent is real, however, it can often be a crutch that allows people to surpass you due to your own self confidence.
Just as IQ is real, and there's difference between intelligence with people, and just like being talented in a sport relies on having the correct proportions, strength, bone density, lung capacity, muscle fibers, etc. Talent, in terms of something like art, must have something to do with visualization, hand-eye coordination, visual memory, and other abilities that are more (naturally) developed in that individual than the general population.
Kim Jung Gi's ability, of drawing complex things from imagination alone, without reference, although definitely developed through training on that skill, he almost certainly must have possessed a "talent" that the average artist doesn't have, which allowed him to develop that ability far faster, and with more quality, than most people who will try.
Talent, is largely overrated, unless you genuinely want to be the best of the best due to an ego/pride thing, but any person can probably reach the top of their interest through training for a long time, even if they don't possess a natural ability on it.
>>527377636That requires being crazy though
>>527377713Why? Are you retarded? I never have issues.
>>527377818what about creativity? an artist can be really technical but lack creativity and uniqueness in their art. think of portrait painters for example. creativity is something that can't be taught.

>>527378302Is that the FZD guy?
talent only really matters for sports that require a body built for that sport
for other skills if you keep blaming it on talent it's just some cope for you not practicing enough or practicing the right way (which is where a lot of people fail and think it's talent)
>>527377971>what about creativity? an artist can be really technical but lack creativity and uniqueness in their art. think of portrait painters for example. creativity is something that can't be taught.Don't really disagree, but I think that there are things that an artist, who isn't that creative, can do to increase their range (creativity).
Amassing large amounts of reference of other artists, and copying different things from different artist (to create your own style), and doing something similar for the subject matters, can imitate "creativity" in a way.
>>527378169Don't disagree with you, but there's also other artists who attempt what he did, and fail. Although he was clearly obsessed, which allowed him to develop such a unique ability, he must have also probably possessed "talent" in terms of visual abilities, those being what attracted him to art in the first place.
You can see his drawings as a teen, from imagination, and they are far better than adult artists are able to do after years of practice. He had already developed his own style, and was able to draw from imagination anything.
Not to take away from his obvious dedication and obsession.
>>527378302Unless you are an artist it will probably be difficult to appreciate what he's able to do.
I, personally, do not find his art to look good either, but I'm just not into "inky" styles. However, his ability, of drawing anything from any angle, with ease, from imagination, is the hardest skill you can learn as an artist, and he doesn't use any construction or almost any sketching, it's really hard and he makes it look easy.
>>527377998This looks grating on the eyes.
>>527378302his performance art, sure. He is most renowned with artists, watching finished drawings in correct perspective flow out of him with no presketching is quite the sight. but he did art the 'normal' way too.

>>527378508>t there's also other artists who attempt what he did, and fail.because they started too late, already had bad habits. kim started age 5 drawing everything his eyes could take in. which led to the wide view fish-eye effect in his art

But "talent" in terms of art MUST exist, just like talent in sports, or things related with IQ, do exist due to more tangible tests that we are able to measure in modern times.
I do completely agree that this advantage is probably minimal, and only accelerates the development for the artist at the very start, or in ways that are able to be imitated by different ways.

You add a track, you press record, you route and add fx mix and master. None of that requires customization to make it better. It works as is.

ok baby, audacity seems to be perfect for you if you just need a track and press record kek
>>527380862Yes, turn knob and listen.
>>527380879Anon,that's what a DAW is. It stands for Digital Audio Workstation. Its whole purpose is to track and record audio.
You guys are kind of stupid, you know that

Other games feature primitive graphics that don't sell well anymore, or mechanics that are so overdone by now that the market has moved on.
Even the games with better graphics are still somewhat amateurish or lack uniqueness.
Since the games shown here mostly have a somewhat acceptable number of reviews for solodev games (500 reviews on a solodev game is pretty great, especially if you haven't put out a lot of games) there's just a lot of games that aren't amateurish but aren't really truly professional either. >>527390565High quality indie games that received mediocre results because they're based on games that were successful nearly a decade ago. I get it. Although the games were made well, why would people want to play them, when the games they're based on were popular 5-10 years ago, and have already been thoroughly enjoyed? Just a bit late, it seems. I hope the developers at least made enough money to cover the development costs. This is why I think analyzing market trends is important. Some games can be good, but simply won't be enjoyed by the majority of the potential audience, because they've already played games like these before. Novelty is extremely important. The saddest part is that although they're great for indie games, as you said, they're still inferior to 3A games. Stuck in a limbo of "It's good, but meh. I'm alright".
>>527390857High quality for an indie game or a game made by one person.
