Had a pretty funny FGO dream a couple nights back. I dreamed I was rolling the GSSR and I got freaking 4 SSR rolls in it. Ultimately the point of Ordeal call is just "To explain and justify each extra class, what they are, why they exist, why they should exist, and what they provide". All the stuff about Gaia testing you is ultimately just a backdrop to that. The second reason they exist is because Nasu reached the end of the Lostbelt saga but still had way too many plotpoints left in the story that he just never got around to, and he ran out of time and space for them, so he just threw them all into the new story arc. Mashu's entire character arc with Galahad was hinted since LB1, it was hinted almost every LB, it was supposed to happen in LB6, Morgan told you in LB6 that it would happen "next LB", except it never did, Nasu just kept putting it off until later because he always crammed too much shit into each LB, only for Nasu to finally get around to it in OC4. Based on what we're seeing, it totally would have made more sense in LB6, but I can see why it was removed just due to not having enough room. In the original draft of LB6 they even detail how it was supposed to be Galahad and Beryl which causes Mashu to awaken, with Beryl showing her human malice in a real way for the first time, which would have made far more sense than the thing we got with Beryl secretly loving her. It feels like you can still hear Beryl at times in the final script with Lilith. But probably a good amount of the final script was changed so we can't be entirely sure.
