I think having the latter could make Chara's commentary stick more because at that point you're not just doing Genocide for the meme of completion, but because you want to just try out different comps/build ups that play differently. Maybe make it a vintage isometric ARPG like Diablo 2 if it'll help this more but I don't think a loot system or action elements would be as good as having a skill tree. Another answer is the "Bethesda Game", imagine Undertale but as a Morrowind overhaul mod; exploring the underground with spell crafting to really make exploring it a treat.

The theory I'm subscribed to as to why Darkners really turn to stone is because they lose their purpose relative to the light world, Lancer as a playing card turns to stone in chapter 2 but not chapter 3 because it has no purpose being in a computer lab.
So what's Ralsei's true purpose? Nobody turning to stone in Castle Town makes sense because it's a closet, and anything can be stored in a closet; but is his purpose really just to fulfill the prophecy or is there something else at play?

Just now there's a nigh infinite amount of dark worlds to explore with differing histories and enemies to fight, perhaps these could be influenced by how you've been handling the Lightworld (stress from school project or story event results in a harder dark world, need to try and generate a dark world in specific conditions to get some of the hidden routes). There could also be some sort of faction system depending on how you want to play with the Gaster/Knight side of things (Knight scheduling dark worlds to be an alternate source of them, hear a rumbling in the dark or something with more precision being granted if you work with her).
The true meaning of Deltarune is hype moments and aura.

I feel like the only real person who could do a story like saving the two dead kids justice would be Toby himself.
Most fanwriters just sort of handwave away child resurrection with some poorly thought out plot contrivance, but both Chara's and Asriel's plan and Asriel's sacrifice at the end of TP are too important to the plot to just throw out so negligently.
You'd need a whole new plot with a whole new conflict that ties into the conflict of the first game in an important way. You cant just go

My honest theory?
I think Deltarune's 'singular ending' will be a technically true statement.
I don't think the normal route will have an ending. I think it will end with a timeloop - with us returning back to the beginning. It will keep looping until you actually go do Snowgrave and break the story's path to reach the true ending. The question will become 'is a true ending worhti it if you have to make other people suffer along the way?'
