Blade of Courage spoilers:
Sonic goes to Not!Japan for the sights.
He saves Yuta's little sister from drowning after Yuta fails. The sister is named Yuri.
Yuta and Yuri live with a foster family. Their parents were slain by a man who looks like a cross between a human and an oni named โManzoโ who seems to be based off the legendary IRL Hanzo (I think?) who came from an evil clan that was taken down by Yuta and Yuri's clan a long time ago. Manzo is the latest surviving descendant. He carries a giant sword like out of Final Fantasy.
Yuta was given his family's sword by his father and told to flee with his baby sister when Manzo arrived. Yuta has been fearful ever since and has been unable to activate his family's sword.
Basically, Sonic tries to teach Yuta to be brave with the help of Yuri. But Sonic says if he fails he'll take care of Manzo himself.
Yuta is unable to activate the sword.
>>527504241Manzo's associates attack a district of Not!Japan and Sonic goes to see what's up, but it's actually a distraction by Manzo who had been spying on them and is aware of Sonic's reputation. He goes to confront Yuta for the sword, but Sonic shows up having taken care of his minions fast.
Sonic and Manzo fight. Sonic gains the upper hand, but Manzo puts some kind of seal on Sonic's shoes that makes his feet feel like they're on pins and needles when he tries to run. He still fights Manzo regardless, but Manzo is still able to use Sonic's handicap to get to Yuta, who has been afraid throughout the whole fight. Yuri stand ups to Manzo and she just gets swatted by him and is hurt.
Yuta activates his sword after seeing his sister hurt and seeing how Sonic is bravely fighting Manzo and helping them despite just meeting them. Him and Sonic fight Manzo, Yuta deals the finishing blow with Sonic's help. Manzo disintegrates in darkness, stating he'll crawl out of hell to get his revenge.
Yuta and Yuri thank Sonic and Sonic says maybe Yuta can help him out sometime before running off and repeats the same monologue from he first preview pages.
The end.
I personally didn't like it. It's really just Sonic guest starring in a different setting. I mean, it's not a bad premise, but you can get the vibe of Sonic being more of a guest star.

The key to write a true Sonic story is to have Tails be the main character, and have Sonic swoop in and be the magical fairy that changes his life for the better.
Or have Amy be the main character, and have Sonic swoop in and be the manic pixie dream boy that sweeps her off her feet, and she desperately wants to win the heart of.
Or have Knuckles be the main character, and have Sonic be this unstoppable force he has to beat, and compete against, escalating into a philosophical battle of worldviews and lifestyles challenging Knuckles' own immovability due to his duties and whether or not he has any desire for personal freedom.
And what makes Sonic the main character of the franchise is all of these other stories being connected through him. But it's never about Sonic's own story. It's about HIS WORLD that all of these other characters live in.

โI remember, that was when Yuji Naka (the current President of Sonic Team) was working on the Sonic developments in America.
Iizuka: Yeah. After that he came back to Japan and worked up the plans for Sonic Adventure, and that first game was made in Japan. Since Sonic Adventure 2, though, they've been made in America, because we wanted to hear what Americans thought and get a better feel for this market.

Iizuka: Every game developer knows how the tastes of American players are very different from the Japanese, but when you actually live overseas, you come to understand that in a deeper, more direct way. I am sure that ends up being reflected in the way we make these games too.

Iizuka: Another big reason for being here, is that as creators, the characters of Sonic are very precious to us. That feeling is what has brought these characters so far, but outside of Japan where we couldn't see what's happening, sometimes Sonic's image was used in ways that we didn't feel was appropriate. So one goal in setting up base here in the US was to be able to manage and control Sonic's image on a more international level, not just in Japan.

There were comics and cartoons that were completely off-brand, he was like a totally different character.
