I just don't read a personality or desire from Aogami even when taking the time to read the demon haunts. 90% of its gameplay tips or stat boosts+plot regurgitation. Even compared to other companions on SMT like Arthur or Goto, or other robot companions beyond SMT (HK-47/Legion/etc.), I barely see Aogami as an ally (trivia, unless very poor memory, the only two moments he acts himself in public is when you talk to Yakumo in Demon King's Castle (COC) and the revive when you beat Tiamat). I feel there's better chemistry with the random demons you have in the stock than with him (despite being one-sided as you can't respond, they still hold the illusion of a conversation much better and showcase more growth). Maybe he's just the biggest victim of "Tell don't show" in gaming? Maybe my Autism is just THAT bad? I've seen your complaint before about Aogami being a tutorial bot. And I always wonder how people walk away from the game thinking that assuming they at least played both routes and sat down any time the speech bubble would flash on the bench. So I decided to take a minute and count how many generic pieces of dialog he has compared to the gay ones. Someone uploaded a text dump of every bench chat for him in the game a while ago. From my count there are 75 conversations in total you can have with him on the bench between both routes. About 30 of those are gay or gay leaning, as in, he talks about his relationship with the young man or repeats wanting to protect him. So that's a little under half. Also I didn't separate the skill boost convos, this is every conversation he can have pilled up together optional or otherwise. After reading though all that, I don't think the people who think this have a valid excuse. You just didn't pay attention or ignored the bench when you were told he had something new to say. You can just say he's boring to you, know you.

Aogami is unique in that I feel like I'm missing 3/4ths a game. VV handles everything else well, how's Aogami the lone exception? Why does he stay with one who'll recreate God's Law? Not like there's another knowledge for him to make a Nahobino with to elevate this beyond pure pragmatism. He mentions how you should think about what you will want to do with the world but never has his own thoughts on it. Most of Aogami's responses in alignment questions is "think of the alternative", at least Isabeau did have a moment where she stood for something in IV (remember being indifferent with her besides the fight, a solid high mostly blunted by IV being easy).

A good chunk of the time its him repeating the last cutscene/boss fight that happened with little of his input own ("oh hey, this is how humans work, I'll stay protecting you" isn't insight to how Aogami wants to work). The boss fight ones are really bad on redundancy even if I appreciate the +3 stats. Admittedly don't have 100% confidence for my memory on CoC, floating with other branches of autism, but the one boss I thought almost came to have something was CoC Lahmu. Only slightly unsure because it also has a on-field dialogue that I might be conflating with but I'm 95% sure it had both demon haunt and the haunt speech (would be nice if we could talk with Aogami in the fucking haunt, its not wrong to rip off good Bioware especially here, imagine if Aogami/the guest characters in CoV would have full conversations with you akin to Dragon Age) almost went somewhere. The types really feel like wasted potential here for they could've been a questline to explore Aogami, the character, some self definition and reflection. What kind of situation called for a Hero with a skill called "Profaned Land"? Could even had a bit more for Koshimizu with his essences. In a good timeline this would be the DLC Atlus would make if it couldn't be implemented at launch, not one off fights

He does. In the beginning he thinks he's programed to do what he's doing now, as in protecting humans and putting an emphasis on protecting the MC. That changes to him realizing that it's not programing, it's his desire and always has been, he even physically says it in the original route. You can see that by how he talks about it. The majority of their relationship and its impact on VV's themes is shown through abstracts, with dialogue guiding like hint markers of what to search for. It's a valid way to depict a concept. I enjoy when media utilizes narrative tools that go beyond its script and VV does it liberally. The drawback is the increased level of vagueness, not helped by an admittedly rushed end game either side, but for me it ultimately stuck the landing.

I don't personally love Aogami either. I would not have gone insane over his simple displays of compassion because I had a good childhood, non-dysfunctional social life, and thus I do not cling to any scrap of affection like a starving dog. But to understand V and Aogami, one has to take themselves out of the equation and view the MC as a character on his own, and to connect all the little dots about him dispersed through the game. The fact is losing Aogami pushes him off the deep end. You arrive to questioning the fact; why brief reassurances on a bench became so valuable to him, that their absence morphed him into That? Did you look for the evidence of his life before the events of V, of having no one, nothing but his little book? Could you reason that in gaining Aogami the wave of feelings he'd never known could hit him like a semi? That these tiny glimpses of them worked to parallel with the character development of the girls, they too irrevocably changed in the brief little they've known one another?

VV puts the spotlight on the duplicity of human nature and its connection to the neverending cycle of the universe. Humanity being his great unknown, his insatiable curiosity to know them is the single common thread in both routes of Aogami's development. The young man and his ending choices became its ultimate microcosm, encompassing all its capriciousness, benevolence, vindicativeness, love. Protecting him, guiding him, loving him, was his answer all this time, and the backstitch closing his arc.

It's not subtext, most of it you can read about in the haunt. The MC is his own character and very mentally ill and went through a hard life. So when you give someone like Aogami who is motherly and nurturing (and clearly loves him) and then take that away you see his true colors and how dark his mind really is. This was the point of the story after the sacrifice, putting the MC in the shoes of those who were beaten down by this world. It's a true test of his ability to overcome his true nature on his own when Aogami isn't there to make him his best self.

The game tells me he cares but only exists as a blade that doesn't even reflect on itself or answer why he likes his wielder. On the topic of dialogue, I am curious. Does Aogami actually speak to Yakumo if you progress his side event after beating Tiamat or is that locked out when you fuse back into Susano-o?

And there's instances where Aogami could stand to exist and define himself a little at least (what do you mean that Aogami doesn't have any comment about his loli double? What do you mean he doesn't have anything to add about his fallen brothers? What do you mean he only gets one flashback?). Honestly a bit could also be thrown at Koshimizu also not commenting about the past husks that he's likely familiar with, each one a brother he lost.

In the game its mentioned that Aogami were born in a vat alongside the Tsuk and Amaterasu types, they have on some level a positronic brain/heart and not a natural demon (hence the whole updating and being born in a lab thing, he's part coding language of some form). In the dialogue you reference, protecting VKun is a mission, an objective, from his Data Banks. Lucifer knew the unit's knowledge and pointed him to it get the Nahobino ball rolling for creation. Maybe tampered the unit to make sure it's focused. Koshi, being a PM for some time did eventually develop his own sense of self (even if its the idea of protecting Tokyo, it felt like it was his convictions, not leeching from Atsuta or similar).

Perhaps that's part of it, I did recognize the animations on the bench but I also do self-insert in SMT so once the dialogue options came in, VKun the character was in the rear view mirror. Might've missed some of the tells during Koshi because a mix of immediate hype and confusion (vastly prefer Tsuk over Susano-o design and the Qadistu fight felt very undertuned, was a phys build and a bit overleveled but still felt like a fluke, it wasn't). There hasn't which is why it's good to pick Aogami's brain. While it's true the Nahobino pair dynamics rely on the whole soulmate thing a bit too much, all of them at least have some explanation as to why they show such devotion. And it has to do with each human's determination. Miyazu is determined to stay alive, Dazai keeps fighting despite his fear, Yuzuru stalwartly wants to protect Tokyo, and so on. Each demon partner is moved by it pretty quickly to the point of showing bias but at least the reason is there. Heroines in the past would look at the protag having done near to nothing yet and show complete devotion. You could say Aogami does the same but he says flat out what moved him right away was the MC's strong desire to live. Weaker humans would have given up and died.
