70 to 90 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 560 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)
Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 80 games a day, 2400 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."
Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

Porn doesn't really need a lot of spinning around or wide motions, and attack animations for games are usually fast enough that the level of detail porn might require just isn't necessary. There's also a lot more animation work that's needed, so you can't afford to spend hours tweaking a jiggle, and there's also the possibility of things changing when you export them into an engine.

>nearly everyone who got defeated immediately quit, rather than trying again (I think this is pretty normal in this event; for better or for worse)
>around 10 players finished mission 2 (which is about 20 minutes of play time)

>I think longest playtime ended up being two (rather clueless) players sitting in the co-op for more than 2 hours. It’s unfortunate I hadn’t shipped that initially, would have been interesting to see how it turned out for the 3 other couples that looked for it but dropped since they couldn’t find it. I think the interesting thing with entertainment is how consumers and especially subsequent generations become largely "immune" (bored) to it. basically "sandbox" means to me many many systems. maybe minecraft with enough mods.
it seems like sandbox to many means "building", but to me sandbox means a bunch of systems.
i think sandbox is different from normal gaming, because a game i usually a simple set of rules and a goal. sandbox is more like a simulation where you make your own goals.
the thing is, to make your own goals, the systems need to be good and working though.
if minecraft would have more systems you could make your own restaurant in it, because with an npc system and a hunger system for npcs and if npcs also mine resources and earn wealth, then they'd buy your stuff. but without those systems you cannot "do what you want".
i get that this isn't what games are supposed to be, but this is what i find interesting.

you can become the best house builder in the world, if you can't afford manpower, resources, property etc. etc. you will not build any houses, sorry. especially not good ones.

>>527629981make a coop game so you can pick who you play with
>>527629771You should use art you can reasonably create for the rest of the game.
If you have incredibly detailed art but can't afford the time or money to make a full game out of it, then you shouldn't be using that art, period. It doesn't matter if the gameplay is fun or not.
If you had shown me Balatro before effects and art was added, just a barebones prototype, I would've said it was shit. The effects add a lot to the game where other roguelike games fail to make it very clear what's going on. Just playing pocker hands and getting arbitrary numbers of points by itself isn't a fun experience, it's fun because of the effects and watching the numbers go up and each thing trigger one at a time.

>>527630106Your example of Balatro's appeal being the effects and animation is so funny to me, because the first thing I did after booting it up was increase the animation speed and disable the effects.

>>527630550he's comparing it to his own solo indie dev game. he's comparing high quality 3d monster models to his 2d pixelart done by himself (he's never drawn a day in his life) and wondering how he'll ever make it
>has coop
>roguelite
>still flops
imagine how shit the gameplay must be
>>527630862my game is coop roguelite DDDDDD:
i really really really think narrative design is the most important aspect of game development
i spam this in almost every thread now, but whenever i see a successful indie game, even if it's lower quality than its competition, it almost always has a more interesting story and methods of progressing through the story
for example, i don't think valheim would have been nearly as successful if it was a generic roguelike
but since you're a viking who died and needs to defeat bosses to escape purgatory and reach valhalla, even though the actual gameplay is mediocre, players always have that goal in the back of their heads
meanwhile a game like
>>527627732 flops because, despite the nice graphics, why would you want to play the game? what are you accomplishing? what is the story? what are you actually doing?
yeah, it looks nice, but you're playing as a bunch of goblins in a 2.5d platforming game because ... ???
meanwhile, a low quality game like hole digging game blew up because it had a unique narrative: you bought a house, and you need to dig a hole in your backyard to discover treasure, which was not only unique, but also very easy to understand and play
i could be wrong here, but i think this is a very important aspect of game design that goes severely underlooked
gamers aren't completely retarded, they need some sort of purpose to play the game after the initial appeal wears off
what is the appeal of mother machine? you're an alien goblin running around for what purpose?
whenever a game flops or blows up, i try to observe the narrative to see what would motivate a player to actually care about the premise of the game, and this seems to be a reliable metric
even vampire survivors, despite being absolute slop, throws the player into a scenario where an endless barrage of monsters is pursuing them, forcing the player to care, otherwise they'll die
a good narrative doesn't even need to be complex, it just needs to exist
pardon the ramble, but i think this is significant

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1040230/Curious_Expedition_2
these are there two other games btw, both sitting at 3.7k+ reviews
The fact my game is going to die without one person besides me actually playing it enough to learn everything about it is making turn evil. Or, rather malicious as evil deeds were done to me and I'm merely retaliating in self defense of my soul.
>>527630810But the poker and roguelike elements fall completely flat if you can't see what you're doing. Even with a faster animation speed, which most people use, you can still see what's going on.
I don't know how much of the effects you've actually disabled because the animations and all that are part of the effects. I'm also talking about the card art and the backgrounds and the UI and so on so forth, it's a game that's limited in scope (only a few screens) but has gone very hard on the polish. You could strip out the poker and put almost any card game in there and it'd work.
>>527631294really hope the 3rd one is in 3D
>>527631147by narrative design do you mean a fun gameplay loop?
i wish it was legal to just rip a whole games assets and then just pay the original creators like 30% of all your earnings.
there's games i could drastically improve if they'd just hand me all the assets and let me redo it in unity.
i'd improve performance, gameplay, ui/ux etc.
The person who clones my game will do it with half as much effort, half as much content and half as much polish but will sell 10x more because they have nepo connection to youtubers and I don't. :)
>arguing about genre
reminder to ignore the wannabe pros retards in the thread
there's a market for everything as long as your game is not garbage
>>527631556no, i mean the core story of the game
the gameplay loop is just the method of you progressing through the story
a super simple example would be mario 1, where the gameplay loop is you running and jumping to reach the end of the level
but the narrative of the game is you, a random plumber, fighting through a kingdom of mushrooms and skeletons and turtles to save the kidnapped princess from bowser
if mario was released as an arcade game with no story, just raw gameplay, would it have performed as well?
the gameplay loop would have been the exact same, but after completing a few levels, they'd get bored and quit
but if you add the story of having to save the princess, now they care about seeing this story be completed, which motivates them to keep playing, and makes them feel good when they accomplish this
i think it's really that simple, just give the player a simple story to complete, with the game serving as a method of interaction to progress through the story

>>527587196>what purpose is there in attacking the other rectangles? It's mostly to either get them off your back, lower their defenses, or to get the other player to drop the gold ball so you can take it.
You can also win if you take out the whole team.
But yeah I'm going to have to do a lot of testing with this. Right now the opponent's ai is really basic and they don't know how to use defensive moves like the wall so it's very easy to run the ball to the other goal but I'm hoping to change that with better opponents.
