The people upset this is not the shonen manga focusing on Sonic they would want don't realize that would require things like characters growing and changing. /sthg/ has shown to prefer static characterization. They don't like it when characters grow and change too much past their original purpose. They don't like it when Shadow hasn't thought about Maria for too long, Knuckles hasn't been on Angel Island in awhile, and Amy doesn't obsess over Sonic as much. It's fine to prefer static characterization, but shonen is usually about characters growing. In order for Sonic himself to be the focus, you would also have to sideline him as a mentor to keep his original characterization or turn him into OOC babynic to turn into what he is now. Making an OC the focus is the only way to please the more crazy sides of the fanbase like us.

This manga made me feel weird.
I then realized I enjoyed it, it was just a fun exciting adventure with Sonic.
And it's been over 10 years since we had a story that was actually fun and exciting and truly embraced Sonic's roots, his true roots. Not some weird notion that Sonic is just repainted Micky Mouse and Green Hill, but the shit he actually had early on. Sonic was always weird and wildly different with each iteration.
Sonic teaming up with a kid who has an ancient sword feels like something the original Sonic writers would come up with, the same people who made Nights and all those Saturn titles.
I actually like a new Sonic thing for the first time in over a decade...
