I was hoping they could do an ending that isn't just "Listen to your dad and touch grass" or "Stop escaping into your addiction and confront it". Its lame, i think an ending that actually respects the world building and people in canvas would be appropriate.

The message they communicate in endings is obvious. In the end writers care about what the canvas represents not the people who live in it, not value of their life or whatever. The canvas is just VR goggles, escape, drugs.

I dont like this framing, but in pursuit of shoving "the message" down your throat the writers created this framing.

It's CPU vs CPU soccer that the /4ccg/ general hosts on Pro Evolution Soccer 2017.
Each team, representing boards or generals or whatever other teams, comes up with a roster of player names and mods in 3d models to the game and watches the CPU duke it out.

I'm still in the early phases of getting everything ripped from Expedition 33 and modded into the game so I only have Lune to show off at the moment, but here is the current roster of players I've come up with so far.
If anyone has any suggestions feel free to contribute.

Verso is on the bench because he'll be a substitution at half-time for Gustave.

this is literally your problem. I don't see any sort of purposeful metaphor there to anything like drugs or whatever and I don't even think it's a good metaphor anyway. If you're upset because the story became focused on the internal struggles if a couple characters instead of the big questions the premise of the world raises, then it's literally your problem. The story was always about an intimate afair concerning a tiny handful of characters and it never shifted focus to the philosophical issues concerning the world. All if that stuff was always in the background, as interesting as it was. I'm sorry you're artistically illitrate, but don't push your shit ideas onto good works.

Some neat stuff in the interview
>Clea was supposed to have a much bigger role, but she had to be cut for production reasons
>The fake epilogue is a late addition, you were supposed to go from "everyone is erased" to "actually i prefer Maelle" with basically no explanation
>Gustave's death comes from a joke between Jen and Guillaume, she basically told him "if you love twists so much, kill off your main character early on" and they realized it made sense
>Monoco collecting feet comes from an inside joke between the artists, the concept artist hated drawing nevron feet so he gave them all peg legs, and the team thought it would be funny to have their blue mage to collect them

I just read it as him addressing the fact that Renoir is immortal. Also maybe a hint that in the decisive moment he may not be entirely invested in the idea of actually killing him. Come to think of it, I can't remember him ever expressing desire to kill him. He seems commited to ending the the paintress' reign, thus ending his life too, and he's shown he's willing to fight him for that end, but does he actually ever say or express in any way a desire to kill him?

But killing her is the same as killing him and everyone else. That's his goal all along.

I also noticed Aline doesn't even recognize the group and Verso as her own creations, she thinks they are Renoirs creations. That says a lot of how little control painters have over their creations once they are made.

that's what I said. He's willing to accept tht as a consequence but I don't think it's something he necesserily wants for its own sake. In other terms, were pRenoir not stopping them from reaching the paintress, I don't think Verso would go after him at all. You see what I'm saying?

>also noticed Aline doesn't even recognize the group and Verso as her own creations, she thinks they are Renoirs creations.
It's pretty evident her mental is severely compromised by the time we reach her. Her ramble also seems to imply rRenoir has tried to fuck with yer in various manners possibly including painting doubles to pass as her own.

Whenever enemy moves, I move my head based on the speed of their attack. When my head hits low, I press parry. Works so far. Sometimes I do miss, but more times than not I'm doing it. He is ambivalent about the value of others because his plan requires everything else to die so that he can die too. He wants to die, but the only way he can die is for everything to die. >blatantly favor an ending that kills off the entire cast
I'll even admit that under the circumstances Verso's ending is correct. but those circumstances exist largely because of his own actions. Verso fucked everyone over in letting Gustav die. If he had been paying attention he would recognize that Gustav cared more about Maelle than the mission. If he had learned the truth he would've been for her leaving and visiting occasionally, and given their relationship she probably would've actually listened.

The same place that everyone else is getting it. The tone of the endings. Verso's is a fucking disney ending somehow and Maelle's is treated as some weird dystopia.

>Verso's is a fucking disney ending somehow
How? The game makes sure to show you that Sciel and Lune (who serve as the stand-ins for the painted beings in that scenes) are very upset, disappointed, angry, etc. about Verso's decision. They try their hardest to make you feel their loss. It's basically the same balance Maelle's ending gives you on the surface with showing everyone alive and happy before the final sting, except the flow is reversed in Verso's where the uplifting part is at the end instead. They are both imperfect solutions to the problem and the game makes this very clear. And the writer completely confirms this is the intention in the interview posted here.

Phenomenal scene, one of my favourites as well. It's astonishing just how many pure cinema scenes they've created.

I'll throw in this one as well:

pRenoir really does come across like such a sympathetic character in second playthroughs. It's really impressive how they manahed to make such a complicated dramatic web with no real villain. You can fully.understand evry party's pov and yet it all leads to disaster for prerty much all involved in some manner.

It's unbelievable that this was somehow the first writing job of a lady who worked in investment management or whatever. Like how the fuck? It's like a miracle.

Yeah, going through every scene again knowing what I do now, it's pretty funny to appreciate pRenoir and his actions from his perspective while Maelle and Verso are sperging out at him (for their reasons obviously)

>It's unbelievable that this was somehow the first writing job of a lady who worked in investment management or whatever. Like how the fuck? It's like a miracle.
She co-wrote it with Guillaume who set the tone for the story and the entire project, not to mention he supervised literally everything very closely, so it definitely made it easier and helped to have someone who clearly understands art to keep an eye on it and course correct when needed. Still, very impressive from her, everyone at the studio seems to be very talented

Medallum is better for burst damage and many fights can end in one turn with the proper builds. It's not hard to get into and stay in virtuoso stance, but it matters in fights that you want to end instantly.

Maybe, but as someone who has both sympathized with Maelle and felt suicidal like Verso, I find it totally understandable. When you cannot even care for yourself, you can't expect any real sympathy for others. Even Esquie and Monoco, who have known him for decades, have sympathy for him, while the others who have only known him for a short time are angry or disappointed. If you don't want to exist anymore, the thoughts, feelings, and wellbeing of people you barely know will not be your concern.

What does her "poem" mean, exactly? I'm trying to break it down line by line but I'm curious to know what everyone else thinks.

>I envy them, those who can't see. Those who know not, that they are not.
>And those who live, blithe and free, sins forgotten and thus absolved.
>A fresh dawn in their playground, while we live in shadows, swimming in ink.
>We are but a fragile dream, a singular weed, resisting, ever resisting,
>That iron dirt, that eternal law. Those who can't see.
>Those who know not, that they are not,
>Do you know? We are fellows.
>Those who know not, that they are not.

Why does Alicia refer to herself and Maelle/the Lumierans as "fellows"?

Why didn't Sandfall just have the voice actors do the motion capture? Even in the French dub, the voices and mocap were done by separate people.

I guess that'd be super expensive. Or just let the mocap actors do the scenes that don't require precise lip syncing. Fuck, idk. It's just jarring.

Here's an LLM response:
>“I envy them, those who can’t see. Those who know not, that they are not.”:
pAlicia envies Lumierans who, despite Gommage’s pain, don’t know they’re Verso’s creations. Their ignorance of the canvas’s artificiality spares them existential anguish.
>“And those who live, blithe and free, sins forgotten and thus absolved.”:
Lumierans find fleeting joy (e.g., Bloom’s festivals) amid Gommage’s grief. Unaware of their role in Verso’s canvas, they’re “absolved” of its burden, unlike pAlicia. “Sins” may refer to their existence perpetuating Verso’s lingering soul.
>“A fresh dawn in their playground, while we live in shadows, swimming in ink.”:
Lumierans see each cycle as a new “dawn” in Verso’s “playground,” unaware of its artificiality. pAlicia, in “ink” (her painted form), knows the canvas’s truth.
>“We are but a fragile dream, a singular weed, resisting, ever resisting,”:
pAlicia and pRenoir are part of Verso’s fragile canvas, a “weed” defying Gommage’s erasure.
>“That iron dirt, that eternal law. Those who can’t see.”:
Gommage’s cycle is the “eternal law,” a harsh reality pAlicia grasps, unlike ignorant Lumierans.
>“Those who know not, that they are not,”:
Repeats envy for Lumierans’ ignorance.
>“Do you know? We are fellows.”:
pAlicia addresses Maelle, recognizing their shared tie to Alicia’s identity, calling them “fellows.”
>“Those who know not, that they are not.”:
Closes with Lumierans’ ignorance, emphasizing pAlicia’s isolation.

>Why does Alicia refer to herself and Maelle/the Lumierans as "fellows"?
pAlicia and Maelle are “fellows” as creations tied to Alicia—pAlicia as her echo, Maelle as her reborn form. pAlicia knows this in Act I, foreshadowing Maelle’s awakening. The term excludes Lumierans, who don’t see the canvas’s truth, and reflects pAlicia’s longing for connection.

She might be lumping them all in together. She is painted but based on a real person, Lumierans are entirely painted, and Maelle lived a painted life even though she was a real person. Alicia might also feel envy toward Maelle because she is actually seeing a version of herself living out a more normal life. You could say Alicia "knew not that she was not" because while she knew her life wasn't normal, it's much more different to see your alternate self living an alternate, better life and know that you can't have that.

The curse of knowing is a weight and she envies the lumierans who don't know the nature of their existence. But in knowing they are the only ones defending them because they don't know the true enemy. Despite being on opposite sides they are the same and ought be fighting for the same goal.

I'm assuming this is quoting pRenoir in his final moments. Still probably the most impactful death in the game for me on second+ playthroughs. More than Gustav and even more than erasing the canvas. Honestly, probably even more than pAlicia even though I find her while arc to be more tragic. There's such melancholy feeling of loss in pRenoir's erasure. That final line hits like a truck. You feel entire weight of all his lived experiences, all his memories his feelings his relationships, all that richness instantly vanished forever. It kinda reminds me of the "tears in the rain" moment but I actually care in this case. And I can't help but wish we could somehow get a glimpse inside Verso's soul in that moment to see what was going on there, because maelle was.just being a psycho and clearly was over the moon about killing this man, and Renoir was too into his own goals to care...

This is exactly it. It's such a twisted, tragic setup too, looking at it in hindsight. It definitely feels like Curator-Renoir's cruelest moment (at least that we see on-screen).

I know the devs are very much show, don't tell. But fuck, I would've loved to hear some kind of internal monologue from r-Renoir about what it felt like to erase your "clone" like that, whether you acknowledge if his experiences are valid, if his emotions are even real, and what it was like to stare yourself in the face as you wipe it all away.

I got the sense that even though rRenoir is capable of acknowledging the experience and feelings of painted people as real, he doesn't extend that as far for the painted versions of the family.
At least to me it seemed a bit callous to regard pVerso first and foremost as Aline's "finest work", even if he did express sympathy. I wouldn't be surprised if he had outright disdain for the painted version of himself.
I'm pretty sure Clea doesn't sympathize with painted people at all, she seems to view them as just creations and nothing more.

Doubt it. Their official twitter makes no mention of it. The official site [https://www.expedition33.com/linkhub] links to IGN's store for basic merch.
Anything more substantial they announce on twitter, like partnering with LacedRecords for late orders of the Monolith Edition.

I don't think Renoir thought less of the painted beings, even the family clones. I just think either he came to eliminate his empathy for them because they were in direct opposition to his purpose of saving his wife, and you know, after 60 years fighting these people you probably make up your mind at some point where you won't second guess yourself anymore (and Renoir doesn't come acrss like the type to second guess anyway) or he likely started consciously or subconsciously associating their existence with the illness that afflicts his wife, sort of dehumanizing them.in particular. Or a mixture of both of those.

Clea just held them with utter contempt though. I actually kinda like how she's writte , like she has a sort of snobbish arrogance that the moment she faced a painted being that dared pretend to be like her in any way (pClea) she fucking turned her into a monstrosity fated to suffer such an excruciating existence that she ends up killimg herself. It's really funny.

How exactly did Renoir escape from under the monolith? He says he was trapped there for 67 years. So the timing of his escape would take place the same year as the game's beginning.

That doesn't make sense to me. Simon's journal says he was sent down there by Aline, and it's implied he accidentally freed Renoir. But we don't have a date on that interaction. It wouldn't make sense for Simon, a member of expedition zero, to still be alive 67 years later.

Possibly? Clea was a prodigy, she might me more skilled than her parents, even Aline. If she wasn't preoccupied with the Writers, she probably could've blitzed Aline right out of that canvas. But she just doesn't care enough about her parents' bickering to do it.

I guess we really don't know for sure what she thought of each family member apart from pClea. But I would fucking love to be there and see their interaction, because pClea likely shared a lot of Clea's personality traits, which is probably why it ended the way it did. Idk I just start imagining how the exchange would go and it makes me laugh. Clea probably has never felt such seething hatred/contempt in her life.

I could be wrong but the impression is that Renoir was only liberated witht the defeat of the Paintress. Did they explicitly state he got.out before the ? Because my interpretation is that the curator we know up until act 3 is just an echo Renoir deployed to help the team out and thus had very limited powers (hence why he needed to use Maelle to gommage pRenoir for example).

I guess that makes more sense. I don't think it was ever stated that the curator who upgrades our gear is an "echo" though. I guess it's just implied, but not very convincingly.

So was Simon trapped down there for 67 years with the curator? Did they pass the time by playing cards?

The gommage eminates from the monolith so I think it's a matter of Renoir's physical essense is still bound to it and he can just project the curator, a fragment of his will. When Aline is defeated his essence is freed and can reunite. Simon just let the curator out. It's to me why the painter forms are like that. They're manifesting as pure will and not using energy or chroma to manifest their physical appearance. It's also why renoir returns to the curator form when you fight him. He stops using chroma on physical manifestation to put it all into fighting.

pVerso and Maelle are soft allusions to Jesus Christ and his decision to live among us (ie Lumierians) in order to save us all. They are both Painted and Painter in the same body - just like Christ is both human and God.

The Maelle ending is a perversion of humanity's salvation, without her ascension to the higher realm, and it's dire consequences.

The Verso ending results in some sort of apocalyptic Revelations scenario, due to some higher purpose - eventually resulting to harmony in Heaven(tm).

Oh and Christ died when he was 33.

The last stand announcement is something that really makes me happy every time it happens because it's just cool. In so many games, when your primary party dies and your backup party rotates in, it's done with no fanfare. Just that small pause and the announcement up top that this is the last stand really sells the desperation. It reminds you that for the characters this is real, they are literally fighting for their lives and it's now or never. I really enjoy little touches and stylish moments like that.

I disagree. I think his primary and arguably only objective is to release Aline (and Renoir) from the prison that is the canvas. He's willing to accept annihilation of his world as a consequence, but that's not his objective. There's a very brief moment there at the turn of act2 into 3 where there's a glimpse of a possible future where the painters are all gone from the canvas but they don't destroy it, and for that brief moment Verso seems almost hopeful, if dubious, of that possibility. I believe that if that scenario was a real option where the whole family of painters decided to leave on good terms and they just maintained the canvas to exist by itself, Verso would have no qualms about it and would probably even feel some relief.

I think it's only by the end when he sees just how fucked up the whole thing is with Maelle and her parents that he just decided that there was no real reasonable future like that.

Aline finds comfort in another world, she leaves her family, that's not what a good wife and mother should do, but considering the trauma it's not completely crazy.

Renoir won't accept her choice to leave them, so he commits genocide and uses violence to force her home. There's a pretty big difference in the wrongs committed here.

The source on 167 years was just some comment on here I think, but thinking about it shouldn't it be 100 years? That's the age Verso gives and he should have been created when she got there?

I think her grieving process is kinda halted when her husband comes to destroy everything? But maybe she would never have come back, that's still her choice to make.

Renoir had a whole lifetime with Aline. Aline even helped him when he was in a similar position previously, paint drunk on a lower reality. I'm pretty sure he knows what he is doing.

Choosing your family over the "greater good" imo isn't really that controversial. He knows it's disgusting - but he has his priorities. Doing the opposite is just as preposterous.

I am all for liberty of choice and letting people do whatever the fuck they want with their lives.

But if my wife, who I know so deeply more than anyone else, I know she would never succumb to such self destructive behavior if she is in her normal state of mind. If she somehow breaks into a multi year cycle of addiction or whatever coping mechanism that transforms her into a shell of the person I know and love - I guarantee I would be doing fucking everything to help her get better.

I think it's only thousands, if based purely on what is shown in-game. It's not about romance, it's about what we know and feel is important and doing what is needed to keep that safe.

I would certainly hesitate if my choice leads to the destruction of sentient beings. BUT I find it difficult to hate on Renoir's choice - prioritizing your family is not an objectively evil thing. This is an age old dilemma discussed a thousand times before in vidya and other media - people will always have different answers to it.

What are you talking about? That's his daughter right there on the cusp of falling for the exact same mental trap he just spent the last 60 years releasing her mother from. He is well within his rights to be fucking pissed and overriding his daughter's immature nonsense for her own good. Escapism isn't any less bad in this context just because your escape valve let's you heal wounds and live what you perceive as a longer life. If anything it makes it worse because it's even more alluring. Not to mention it literally kills you if you get drawn in too deep for too long, which is the effect it is manifesting in both Aline and Alicia.

I will not buy any of this coping nonsense. It's one thing to argue about the weight of the consequences in regards to collateral damage of Renoir's decision, which is totally fair to argue, but there's no argument to be made that his reasoning in regards to his family is totally and completely right.

Renoir is the most sympathetic character because of his unenviable position. But his own coping mechanisms directly created the main conflict. He failed and got locked up. Then Clea had to clean up his mess. He tried to take on the world by himself rather than depending on those around him for help.

Because it is literally created by them as an explicit subrealm of their existence and their bodies still exist outside the painting. I'm not gonna have this "I'm 14yo and just saw the Matrix" argument. From the painters perspective that world is simply not "real" and there's no way I would let the people I love waste their lives in there while their real body dies out and they accomplish nothing in it.

Because the world in which the painters were born is their realm were their life begins and ends, while the painted world isn't. They were not born there and they won't die there either. It's literal make belief for them.

For the painted people/creatures, the painted is just as real as ours is to us, but it's fucking dumb to argue it's also real for the painters because is simply isn't.

I don't see why it matters? I think if you're religious you'd want to be in the real world so you can live out gods commandments and go to heaven or whatever. But if you're not you can live out your philosophy and values in this other created world just as well, or for Maelle even better since she can be healthy instead of a burn victim who is mute. She also has all the people she loves the most in the canvas, people who actually show her love and care, something her family seem to have failed pretty horribly at.

You can even also interpret the fact that Clea is soloing the writers as her fighting for a spot in the story (The lead writer recently revealed Clea was supposed to be a bigger part of the story but got cut because of production)

Which is why it's a dogshit point, because it does matter because at the end of the day all that matters is what you do and leave behind in the real world you share with your peers. You can sedate yourself to death in a magical illusion that enriches your mind and all that, but in the real world you will just have been a person who briefly existed and then died having created nothing, changed nothing, no one who will remember you, no children to carry your legacy and to continue the human species, no sign you ever existed because for all intents and purposes you barely did. You were just a figment of your own imagination.

the anon has a point, she can self actualize in-Canvas and it wouldn't make much difference from her perspective.
However we also know that Maelle, in choosing to stay in the Canvas, is also leaving her mother, father and sister in the higher realm - and all this after the death of Verso who sacrifices himself so that Maelle could live on.
In isolation, she's justified, but from a broader perspective she also has a family she is forsaking, in making her choice to stay.

Imagine you play SAO hyper realistic VR game and stay there permanently, full dive suit and all, living your fantasy dreams - while your body rots away. In the meantime you are throwing away your relationships in the real world - family, friends. If you were a loner with nothing to live for - maybe the SAO world is the right choice. But if you have a good set of people around you, who are seeing you waste away in real time? How would they react? Maybe the right answer is for them to let you make that decision, however self destructive it seems from their perspective. Maybe it's for them to go full Renoir and slap some sense into you. It's another grey are imo - but I lean towards the Renoir angle.

Renoir is clearly not an awful person and Alicia even expresses that she thinks very highly of him durgin the convo with pVerso in empty Lumiere. And then she quickly gets her reality check when she realizes he's not even listening to her, because he's already set on his idea.
>In any case, having an awful family or awful circumstances in your personal life, especially when you're still so young, is no excuse to run away into a fake life.
People are running away from homes in much less dire circumstances. It's a battered housewife syndrome. You have to stick to your family no matter what, even if it's to your detriment.

This is so tiresome. I feel like I'm talking with actual 20 year olds. Everything you are saying is just complete nonsense and I feel like it's just not gonna matter if I explain why.

Do you really belive that Alicia just immediately changed her opinion of Renoir because of that decision? Do you really believe that Renoir (or a person more generally) became a "bad" person because of one decision you disagree with? Do you believe you can only love people who always make decisions you like or agree with? This is all such childish thinking. And your second point is absolutely ridiculous. To the point that you must be trying to completely misunderstand the point. Just think about it for 10 seconds, c'mon.

Neither was mine. This self actualizing mumbo jumbo means nothing if you're knowingly doing it inside a reality you know is not yours. It's pure, indulgent escapism. It's great as far as it goes, same way watching a movie or reading a book or consuming any kind of art is great insofar as it enriches your life and (crucially) helps you live out a better life (you know, YOUR actual life in the real world with other people), but treating it as a substitute for your actual life is completely backwards.

If you want to take morality out of the picture then fuck it, why even argue about anything? Renoir destroyed the whole canvas and forced Aline and Alicia to come out because he wanted to and had the power to do so. Why should he not?

It's the first game of a small (~30 people) studio made with incredible passion, love and care. Gameplay is fun, the story is pretty good, levels and visuals are nice to look at and it becomes a complete package with the superb soundtrack from some complete soundcloud/obscure French forum newbie that knocked it out of the park on his first try. In an ideal world this is what games in 2025 should be by default but since we've mostly been getting slop after slop for years, E33 is a unique masterpiece in comparison just by being a fun and competently made game. Its genre is of smaller importance in all of this since with the parry/dodge system it's very appealing even to those who aren't usually fans of turn-based combat.

The more i read discussions about the endings the more i start to hate the story and what the writers ended up going with.

Its obvious that they wanted to shove a message down people's throats.

The people who love it they have opinions that are a variation of "its time to beat addiction" ; "escapism bad" ; "it's like drugs" ; "time to log off VR" etc. This is what is going to be touted as masterclass of writing for foreseeable future.

death of the author, anon

the devs wanted to tell a specific story, and while they wanted it to be open to interpretation in general - at the end of the day they will have biases and ideas on how to end Their story.
We do have grounding and source material on very round characters and world building from which we can draw from and it's fun to extrapolate, build and discuss ideas and personal interpretations to the story and ending with other anons - regardless of what the author intended.

They don't actually say that though. You get two Clea dialogues saying distinctly that both endings are bad to to do neither one.
>don't fall into the same trap as your mother
And
>don't let your father's fear trap you.
The story is a mirror between the two families. PAlicia yearns for a solution that allows them all to have peace, but verso prohibits that outcome because he never gives the letter to maelle and instead drops it in the ocean, forcing the choice between one of two bad endings just as verso has made bad choice after bad choice.

>Lampmaster
Honestly pretty easy if you don't worry about shooting the lamps because the fuck-you-sword attack is easier to parry than the rest of his combos.
>Endless Tower
Used a Verso free aim build and the usual Medalum Stendhal to shit out damage. Only the last couple of trials lasted more than one turn.
>Clea, Simon
Same as above. I didn't look up any one shot builds. Learn to parry phase 1/2 attacks then skip their last phases with Gommage. It helps to have Base Shield (for Clea only), Survivor, and Second Chance on everyone if you fuck up parries often.

Beaten the game yesterday. The game's pretty damn good but the over-reliance on avoiding/parrying attacks in the optional act 3 fights in the game made me lose interest in this game so I've just done the last couple bossfights without bothering with most of the overworld bosses. It's not unfair to call this part of the game dodge/parryslop which is ironically what the souls series devolved into with elden ring. It shed its JRPG skin to show a button pressing simulator underneath. I've avoided these threads to avoid spoilers, so I wonder if anyone here feels the same

Unfortunately, nobody would've gave the game a proper chance without it. Modern action games need to have parry/dodge mechanics, enemies that look a particular way, etc. or else people will call it shit without giving it a real look. Basically, every modern action game needs to either be Dark Souls/Elden Ring or remind you of Dark Souls/Elden Ring just to get people to look at it.

just finished the game
picked Verso's ending because it felt right at the time but then it made me feel LIKE A PIECE OF SHIT
for real though, why couldn't alicia, or any of the dessendres for that matter, come and go from the painting at their will? Couldn't alicia just find a healthy balance of popping in on the weekends to see how everyone's going and then go back to irl? I don't know, I may have missed some plot points.
In the end though it seemed like the entire reality of the canvas was being fuelled by kid Verso's tortured soul so it would ultimately be unethical to allow it to continue. At least that's what I told myself when I gommaged my best friends away...

It doesnt matter. What matters is the very end. Verso's ending gives satisfaction by validating your choice and giving you catharsis. Maelle's ending has neither of those things and tries to make you feel bad.

Hack writers, they should have had one ending.

Verso enders dont consider Canvas world worth saving, their choice is validated by Verso and Renoir, they think it's an illusion, a figment of imagination, npcs in a video game, an allegory, a representation of drug addiction.
But at the same time they feel bad for little kid Verso being forced to slave at the mines and kick puppies for eternity and want to put him to rest.

This is ofcourse thanks to the way writers framed the story and where focus at the end is. It's by design.

Yeah, it's unfortunate how easy they made it for the player to disregard the painted people. Already they have the "they're not real" bias working against them, not helped by how the story started shifting focus away from them since Act 2. You don't get to see any existential crises that touch on this so it's up to the player to think about these questions on their own. Unfortunately the average player is retarded and will only think about what has been explicitly shoved in their face instead of taking a step back and drawing their own conclusions.

To be a little bit fair, it's because it's a bait and switch. Game leads you to believe that you're simply going off to defeat The Paintress in order to solve the yearly wave of death problem. However, the real situation, and what's actually going on isn't revealed to the player until AFTER The Paintress fight. By that point, it's the end of Act 2. And Act 3, the final act, only has two required fights, IIRC. The rest of the Act being cutscenes completely optional side content.

Genuine spoilers, by the way.

Stop saying "oh devs say there is no good ending" as if that's remotely legitimate response. Devs favour an ending clearly, one that is consistent with their message, offers validation and catharsis. The directing and framing of the story isnt arbitrary but intentional.

Dont want to call it "good" ending? Fine call it whatever you want, "correct" ending.
Call it "denial ending" vs "acceptance ending", "escapism ending" vs "moving on ending", which of those positions do you think writers align with more? You think they have no opinion? They made it, they control what characters say, do and act.

No i dont like Verso's ending. I dislike writer's hamfisted approach.

I prefer Maelle's ending, but it does leave a bit of a sour taste. She let herself get lost in the canvas, she undid the gommages, sure, but the game alludes to Lune and Sciel not "quite" being that same Lune and Sciel that the player adventured with, and Gustave and Sophie got back together again. What I'm trying to say is, rather than simply living within the canvas world, Maelle took full control of it. Everyone within it are puppets dancing to her strings. One could even argue that she's even worse than her mother.

Fuck Verso though, he deserved what he got in Maelle's ending.

I wish there weren't parries/dodges in the game. Obviously, the game would have to be balanced more around the fact, and it wouldn't have been as popular, but knowing you're going to take damage would actually diversify strategy in this game. As it is, there's no reason to not just pick your 3 favorites of the cast, and run glass canon builds on all 3.

I'd been thinking about a new playthrough with Maelle as defensive support, and Sciel as offensive support with Lune as DPS, but like, what's the point?
