I don't know who 80% of the characters in the Sonic universe are.
Absolutely โ *Sonic Unleashed* **did** save Sonic in many ways.
By the time *Sonic Unleashed* dropped in 2008, Sonicโs reputation had taken a major hit, especially after the disaster that was *Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)*, aka โSonic '06.โ That game was meant to be a grand reboot but ended up being buggy, rushed, and critically panned โ it damaged the brand *hard*. People were seriously questioning if Sonic still had a future.
Then came *Sonic Unleashed* โ and while it wasnโt perfect, it was a **massive step forward**:

How Unleashed Saved Sonic
The Hedgehog Engine
*Sonic Unleashed* introduced the **Hedgehog Engine**, which powered the stunning, high-speed daytime stages. These levels were a true return to form โ fast, smooth, and visually breathtaking. That tech would go on to power *Sonic Generations* and *Sonic Forces*, and remains one of the most beloved engines for 3D Sonic.
Reclaimed Sonicโs Identity
After awkward experiments, Unleashed re-established Sonicโs tone: bright, energetic, great music, and charm. Sonic was no longer grimdark or trapped in melodramatic stories โ it was fun again.
Chip & the Worldbuilding
Instead of more cringey love interests (*looking at you, Elise*), we got *Chip*, a cute companion with a meaningful arc. The world tour concept gave Sonicโs universe a vibrant style.
The Music
Unleashed has one of the **greatest Sonic soundtracks ever**. Every region had its own cultural sound, the orchestral scores were on point, and songs like โEndless Possibilityโ gave people hope again.

It's so obvious what they should have done with Tangle. She should have been Sonic's companion.
The character is literally perfect for it. She's a fangirl who gets to meet her hero. She has a fun personality and a moveset that would actually work in a game. You make her the audience POV. She's the one who can ask what a Chaos Emerald is and have a character arc, because Sonic himself doesn't really change. He's the force of nature, she's the person swept up in it.
Instead they shackled her to Whisper for social media brownie points and now she's stuck in this weird side-story ghetto. Just let her hang out with Sonic and the main cast. Let her be the fun, energetic adventurer. It would have been so much better.

I think Silver was doomed because he was introduced as a hero character, but was tricked and was sent to kill one of the good guys who was also the main character of the series. Silver was supposed to be a punk with a strong sense of justice, but this would only work if he was fighting only actual bad guys with no deceit. This is different than Shadow. He was presented as an antagonist and "dark" version of Sonic. Shadow's tragic past and having his heart changed at the end was subversion. Not to mention he was the biggest focus of the game. Silver wasn't even the main focus in his debut game. Shadow himself outshined Silver in it.
