I believe that the FRIEND is definitely involved in the disappearance of Dess. It's also possible that as a DEVICE, this was part of Gaster's plan to ensure that the prophecy is properly subverted (to have a new future), which then also implies Dess was an original member of the prophecy.

The message of Undertale is "Try not to kill, and try not to be killed."

I think its too early to say what Deltarune is about but it seems to be primarily about willpower and defiance against fate. To that end, I would say that FRIEND is likely a thing that seeks absolute freedom and views the entire world as its playground. A toxic Friend in name only that seeks to control you, that stands as a contrast against your true friends that support you.

However, I am no theory crafter, only a humble ass lover, so I will probably be wrong.

In the chapter 4 egg room, one of the philosophers says (scrambled up) "Lost where the forest would grow the children followed the pointed tail. The poor children!" I'm making a small assumption that the lost children in this case are Kris and Dess. The prophecy text says "They'll see the tail of hell take crawl," and as posted last thread, a cut sprite keeps the point.
Beside that, Gaster has 666 motifs and is associated with the Devil, so calling his home (or at least a place deeply associated with him, thanks to the garbage noise) Hell would be fitting. So, the FRIEND, a part of the DEVICE, which is a cat (with a tail), would have the Tail of Hell.
There's more things in here about what traumatized Kris enough to go to therapy and see the forgotten man, but that all just points back to the "forest," what with the trees, and not so much the roots.

So we're supposed to assume based on "opposites attract", based on fetish porn aesthetics, based on heteronormative dynamics and cliches you've already seen a billion times, based on some idea of mandatory "justice" and revenge.

And yet it just doesn't really work. In fact it ends up seeming so much worse because of this sort of thing. I guess Toby thinks the characters as symbols will mean people will have to like it, that with these cliche themes we'll all just feel compelled to say it has substance. And it's so stacked that we have to wonder how the fuck Susie could be interested in Noelle at all, aside from this fetishy angle of dominance and conquest.

Imagine you nerd character ends up with jock character so surely everyone should love it, right?? No, that's fucking silly.

Strict adherence to these kind of mandatory theming is probably a big reason why romances feel so fucking banal, while friendships come across as much more organic to the point that people just wish they wish romances could be like that too.

The whole Hometown is a conspiracy. There are multiple villages like it all over the world. These villages exist only to cultivate human souls.

The roaring knight opens up dark fountains so that the soul can close them and empower itself. It keeps doing this over and over until the soul has grown ripe.

The prophecy is the template these towns use to go through the soul-cultivation process.

Once ripe, the soul will be harvested and used as a weapon by the monsters.

New theory.

I see it commonly referred to as The Soul but let's reframe it to be The Angel. Ralsei has basically said that we're ultimately going to banish the angels heaven in the end but that would also include us The Soul/Angel. He still needs our help to get to the end but this might explain why he constantly sends us away so he can talk to Kris alone, so they can make a plan to deal with us when the time comes. Okay let's think logically here. This is what we know about Kris:

1. Family: Toriel, Asgore, Asriel. Childhood friends: Noelle and Dess by proxy of her being Noelles sister and Asriels friend.

3. Kris used to play the piano.
4. Something at some point happened to Dess.

We can infer that the reason Kris most likely stopped playing the piano is in relation to whatever happened with Dess which in turn could be in relation to whatever happened to their hand. Maybe an injury has prevented them from playing the piano like they used to. When they play the piano in chapter 4, they fuck up the first time and Susie pressures them to play for real. I don't think Kris was playing poorly on purpose, I think an injury is hampering their ability to play properly.
