>>527996268Why apologize? That's a good practice. Once I forgot to flush my logs and I couldn't figure out why the debug output didn't match the expectations. Turns out it was because std::endl automatically flushes the stream and since I was printing without line breaks I had to do flush the debug log manually.
You will be able to read about more adventures like that once my devlog is ready.

If there's one thing I learned making games, asset packs and even doing freelance work is that there's no such thing as easy money on demand.
Sure you can win the lottery but that's not something you can plan for, you don't say "I need to win the lottery next month so I can pay rent", you just buy a ticket in addition to the normal stuff you do.
If you want something done tomorrow (release a game, escape NEET life, whatever) you need to start 6 months ago.
I'm making friendslop in Unity. I have a basic game built, a custom character controller, attacks, enemies, objectives, time limits, etc. I just need to be able to add other players to the game. How can I do this? I effectively already have the singleplayer portion complete, I just need to make this multiplayer. I was thinking of using the Among Us style lobby creation, where somebody creates a lobby, it generates a unique code, and people insert that code to join. I just need to figure out how to make it multiplayer now. I'm not doing public lobbies - I'm too lazy. Code-invite lobbies only.
>>528000916learn how to do a flood fill, a breadth first search and a dijkstra's algorithm on the grid and you can do a lot with it!

I have a question, because you guys seem smart.
Recently a game called Broken Arrow has been released and to everyone's surprise, it doesn't have a save option. There are over 1-hour long missions and you can't save during those missions. And the game is not in early access.
How can that even happen? I just struggle to understand the logic behind this situation.
>>528005392Game works without saving so it's not a priority.
>>528005392>you guys seem smart
>>528005493>not a priorityBut it's a basic thing, it's expected in the vast majority of games, especially in strategy games.
>>528005392Computers can hibernate therefore saving games is still possible.
Therefore players will keep the game open at all times, and this increases engagement.
>>528005392You don't need a save.
>>528005573Ye but it's not the only basic thing it's a basic thing among other basic things and the dev chose to prioritize the other basic things.
>>528000916Havent you posted this same screenshot the past day?
>>528005392>How can that even happen?see the exhibits
>>528005493,
>>528005587,
>>528005749developers do not have to do anything because modern gamers are completely retarded and will excuse anything
>>528005392>and to everyone's surprise, it doesn't have a save optionThis is no surprise at all. Anyone who played the playtests knows that they never had and were never intending on implementing a save system. If you can't spend an hour to play the game, you probably shouldn't be playing Broken Arrow.
>>528005876Saving the state of a program should be something that is done at operational system level.
It's dumb for every single problem to have to reimplement something that is useful for all and every single one of them.
If you want to complain about not being able to save my game, complain not to me but to Microsoft.
>>528005392normally psued devs that think theyre game is above "easy mode" shit like saving the game
>>528005834You can share in more than one thread. Most people don't look at older posts so it's not a bad idea to share progress a few times before moving on.
>>528005876It's EA anon, it's not an excuse. It literally isn't a priority.
devs just release shit unfinished nowadays because early access is gimped
>>528005392A much simpler game, Balatro, has some exploits you can use by saving and reloading, despite the game being built to not let you cheese shit by savescumming.
That's a game with very binary and finite states, rather than many floating objects.
I don't know much about the game specifically or what it was built with but ... Unless you want to save all of RAM to memory, it could be a bit of an ordeal to make a save system. It's fine if you keep a save system in mind from the start but it's not free to make either.
If a modern dev doesn't have saves, it's generally a conscious decision.
If devs in the past didn't have saves then it was likely just because saves were a very optional feature.
That's all I can realy say.
Painfully cold take:
The programming aspect of making a game is actually quite easy as long as you are good at pirating courses and resources.
Hardest parts of making a game are the artistic aspects of it, like the story, art, music, which are what makes or breaks a game.
>>528006338What are the balatro exploits?
>>528006349>cold takeit's not cold it's just literally the truth

If you don't have extrinsic motivation in life, you're better off working.
Anyway, i'm 30, live off 30K a year, will reach FIRE in 7-8 years assuming historic averages. Maybe i'll go part time if I lose my WFH job.

>>528006349True. Video game programming is literally "make thing move if condition is met". It's extremely simple, and doesn't even need to be foolproof, no one is going to die if there are some bugs.

>>528007897It is actually something I think about. Making a mini game like Among Us. If I ever think of a really good hook I'll do it.
>>528005392I was thinking to not have a save option. Just makes my life easier as a dev. It makes the day seem a bit more meaningful. I got the idea from Stardew Valley and I like it. An hour is excessive though. At least with stardew you can just go to sleep at any point.

>>528006407If the crimson heart? vessel? disables the turtle bean joker and you quit and then load back in, it permanently increases your hand size
>>528008158it can make the experience less enjoyable.
Giving the player the option to cheat all the way to the end of a game hurts the experience for most players because having that option makes the win feel less 'earned' since other people could've just skipped, plus some players would be tempted to do it when they get frustrated.

*psshhhtt* It's over, over.
you ARE accounting for the new laws in the EU regarding accessibility arent you?
>>528008846It can pay, but you'll naturally have more limited visibility. It has both upsides and downsides.
>>528009583All games must now have a dildo somewhere because otherwise gay men might not be able to get off, and that's not accessible.
>>528009583they introduced new laws recently for games that "target EU customers" (something as simple as making games available for purchase in Euros counts as targeting). Bunch of accessibility laws like no flashing lights that can cause seizures, can't have voice chat without also having text chat and other such accessibility red tapes. If you don't meet them, your game cant be sold to EU customers.

>>528008846a lot of artists start off on porn and move to the projects they want to do. Or they create appeals to porn-addicted folks for a financial base like in Undertale or Atlyss
>>528009583GPSR is product safety legislation, meaning games cannot be unsafe. Most notably, this would likely cover photosensitive epilepsy seizures induced by effects in games.
If you are developing any game at all, you must be aware of and compliant with GPSR.
GPSR means itโs now illegal to target any game at the European market unless thereโs an assigned safety rep with a Europe address (with contact details communicated to both players and the authorities), and the game has had a safety risk assessment which is documented in the gameโs T&Cs.
Itโs illegal for a game to be unsafe in any way, which means any risk to health and safety, including mental health (specifically cites as an example mental health risk for kids of online-connected products). Compliance with existing standards โ like the standard on seizure risk reduction โ means youโre presumed to be compliant with GPSR.
EAA means itโs illegal to provide any communication or e-commerce service (defined as buying over websites & mobile apps) to people in the EU without it being accessible. Accessible communication means offering alternate channels (e.g. if you have voice, also offer text). Accessible e-commerce means ensuring accessibility of specifics like ID, security and payment services. Additionally, websites & mobile apps delivering comms or commerce need to meet stringent accessibility standards, and there are some process & documentation rules too.
>>528009583It means that if your game has white people in a European setting you might be investigated for hate crimes. France, especially, must be 100% African, of you'll be put in prison for being anti Semitic.

>>528015363Publisher horror stories
>>528015091can you name 5 works that failed to be sincere because it subverted tropes
>>528015091Agreed. I've noticed for years that millennials have this obsession with categorizing things that don't need it. And then once something is categorized, they be default assume the category is bad. Like, the strong prince saves the princess. This is a trope, because it's a trope it's defined, and by being defined it's bad and must be flipped. There's no reason to flip it, it's just obvious to the millennial. So we get games like Diablo 4 "Did you know it's GOOD to be evil? MUAHAHAHAHAHA" And it's like, what the actual fuck is going on here. Why is this such shit?
Instead of just not telling the prince story, and telling a different story, the prince must now be a rapist or something bizarre. Like they could just tell a story of a strong mother instead, like people have always done. Or a love triangle, where they choose between what their family wants, and what they want. But hey that's a trope and it's bad, so let's make your dad a rapist and your savior is a random drug dealer.

See this? That's rogue, isn't it beautiful? The tropes of this genre were subverted and what's why all the current rogue-likes failed.
>>528016397Modern gamers would spit out a modern Earthbound and demand that you put in a SPARE button. That you put in something else aside from the old ticking health system.
The Kalemonvo train of thought leads to nowhere.
>>528018151Leads to a released game
>>528018151Yes, if by "gamers" you mean "normies"
I think you can add more stuff, that improves the overall experience, and it doesn't have to be a gimmick like the SPARE button. The ticking health system of EB wasn't a gimmick in my opinion, but something that geniunely changed the gameplay style.
And this is what I was saying, EB isn't a perfect game, so it could use alot of improvements (when I played it the most piece of shit thing was the inventory), without any gimmicks or trope subversions.
I think gamers demanding something new is fully understandable, but yeah it doesn't have to be gimmicky.

>>528018151"The Kalemonvo train of thought leads to nowhere."
False. The game released, sold, which is better than 99% of you. It also left the Dev with marketable skills and proof of knowledge. Meaning if he ever needs to, he could likely fall back into being an employed Dev. Again, putting him above most. It was pretty beautiful game with some advanced features. Very commendable.
The problem with actually making a new game is that 90% of steam's audience only plays games to drown out intrusive thoughts so anything that requires thinking and learning is venom to them.
>>528018995>You either take all of the source material's ideas and chuck them in the trash or you get this.So what you're saying is...don't copy/clone an existing game? Why didn't you say that then?
>>528019489I admit it is asking someone like me a lot to have to learn some non intuitive control scheme and a bunch of logic just to play a game these days. Tried playing Heart of Iron IV and just couldnโt.
I did play a lot of Helldivers and Stardew though. Still love a great game. But itโs hard to dedicate time to something youโre not sure will pay off.
I added double Uzi to the game, some weapons I have in the to do list are the rocket launcher, flamethrower and gatling gun.
>>527998348Was this research made for people who can only every think about something if a research was made? "People who are given tools to do things with less thinking, think less" is something anyone could have told you.

Chocolate represents that which is delightful. The haunted castle represents the allure of the unknown. The ghosts represent the imprint of the past. All of these things are important. However, donโt think for a moment that, because this game features ghosts in a haunted castle, it is an evil or negative game. On the contrary, I intend for this game to be positive, uplifting and life-affirming. However, if Stardew Valley mostly channeled the energy of the sun, Haunted Chocolatier channels the energy of the moon. Both are vital.

I want subtitles to display alongside audio at the same speed and timing that the words are being said.
My thought so far is to tokenize each word and have them added to a label alongside the length of the audio itself, but that hasn't been quite right. What would you all recommend? I was debating doing it based on when the audio picks up, like a minimum decible level or something.
This is in Godot btw.

Then returned to my 'dream game' concept I thought was too much, and it's the most fun and inspired ive ever been making games. Sometimes you just gotta follow your dream despite it being the bad advice. I now have a little prototype im excited about and cant wait to flesh out.
Took a bunch of time off devving, but I'm slowly getting back into it. Currently working on an enemy that splits up into a bunch of smaller enemies.

I was on the side of just make your dream game, but given that you need to market and make a steam page, and that has it's own meta to learn, it might not hurt to make a small game. And that's the path I chose. But if you already went that route and didn't like it, then ya, just make your game.

>What point are you trying to fucking make hereThe nature of coding is akin to a puzzle essentially, you simply need to fill in the gaps until the system works. Whereas with art and creativity there's no "destination" for a lack of a better word and any principles you can follow can only be obtained by first-hand experience and knowledge of the medium (e.g exit button should always be at the bottom for example, shake effects for collisions/impacts, menu design, game design, game art, game music etc)
>>528026887Retards cannot see past their own butthole. That's why they screech their narrative about muh pajeet who wants to resell the art for free.
A literal common situation is a company making a full product with said art, find a client interested in it, and the art just being included in the package. It's not about selling the art by itself, it's about being barred from selling your final product and losing a client because you made the mistake of commission something from an artist with an inflated ego.
>>528027492"Why are you sperging out at me? You sound like a triggered retard."

Whatever the case, many are mentioning how there's a 'right' way to use AI, for research and consulting, which I agree with, but even seasoned Developers at large companies have expressed that they've felt a neurological-like fatigue from using AI tools. So it's worth taking this as a warning that you should take a break from prompting at least twice a week.
What's really concerning is that they only tested adults, but every kid growing up now has a phone with some kind of LLM. Makes me think everyone is betting on the AI takeover because AI-induced cognitive decline will necessitate it.

The general trend I'm observing is that I'm only being treated like shit here, while people outside are much more generous and amicable towards me. This place is a cesspit that rewards feminine clownish behaviour. There is no global ladder of game quality. Every single dev who falls for the social hivemind pays for it in some way. Here's a word of advice: both in business and in art it's detrimental to your well-being to be aggreeable, and too many of you are aggreeable. You're like skittish women, huddling to the herd at the first sight of danger. You're afraid of going against the grain. You're afraid of being ostracized or disliked or excommunicated. This makes you closer to women than men. And in case you never knew this, women suck at building lasting and successful things. The fear of social rejection always ruins you in the end.

Ok, bros

In order to make money, ofc

there is no fast money in game development
but if you're willing to invest years of effort into making a good game, then any genre is viable
>>528038692Start with Pong.
>>528035950>It's better to just let a senior dev spend a month on it, not force any arbitrary check ins, and get the fucking thing working as it should.Yeah skunkworks shouldn't be subject to fictitious accounting, misses the whole point.
>However, on the flip side, some devs are pieces of garbage and need to held accountable.Remote work and AI has made this problem so much worse. People are either working multiple jobs on the low or are getting past weak interview processes with AI and then totally failing to do any actual work.
The easiest way to one-up the job market right now is to actually learn the programming language you're using and creating small side-projects.

OKAY SO I want to display a line of code part by part alongside audio. One anonw as gracious to give me an audio ai analyzer but that's a bit too heavy duty for what I'm doing
Right now, I have a AUDIO SPECTRUM ANALYZER appending the next word for the RichTextLabel text dependent on magnitude. My issue now is that I want to add in BBCode to the text as well.
Currently, my idea is to create an array of labels added at a specific word indice when the word would be displayed. So it would be stripping the original phrase using RegEx, splitting it into an array, finding the instances where BBCode exists, adding those to a matched word from the split array, and finally adding it back to the text that is supposed to be displayed.

How difficult should I make the puzzles in my game?
It's not a puzzle game, but there are some puzzles in the area.
Right now, the only puzzle in the game is in the library. You need to put the books in the right spot of the book case, but it's pretty easy.
I don't want that to be the only puzzle in the game, but at the same time I don't want the additional puzzles to be as easy as that one.

>>528042750If there are puzzles in a non-puzzle game I'd say they should be pretty easy. You can only get away with difficult puzzles if the game is clearly advertised as being about that, otherwise players are just going to get mad. Think about the level of stuff in Hogwarts or God of War. Or kek even Bioshock Infinite like

Decent as a second monitor and you can program the hot keys. I use mine for level design in Unity and the hot keys are assigned to commands on "Prefab World Builder" (its an editor asset for placing objects)
>>528043707addendum: if the puzzle is part of a "secret" or some easter egg challenge it's ok to be hard out of the blue. What I originally said is moreso if that puzzle is apart of the main game path and a player is forced to get through it.

Then I got the $200 XPPEN 13.3, and instantly I could just always render whatever stroke I intended. Godotters is there a simple way to create a sprite ghosting effect to show my pixel art character moving at high speeds? My character is composed of multiple sprite2D nodes
>>528020267Science is about proving obvious things to make them verifiable evidence. You are the kind of guy that would never come up with gravity and forever believe Earth is flat because its obvious. Yeah, sure your intuition tells you that people who use ChatGPT are fucking retards, but other people can think it helps people think better or some other dumb shit. The point is that you can now show people proof that AI fags are stupid and lazy and you can write about it in other scientific papers.
>>528065920There's literally a built-in Godot thing to do just that and it's in animatedsprite somewhere.
>>528065357Leather jacket, pleated skirt, fishnet stockings, thick-soled leather boots, white tee shirt with or without print, heavy belt, (spiked) collar.

If you modify a sound can you still use it without invoking copyright?
Deltarune sampled the mario โMama Miaโ and was able to be sold, does that mean itโs acceptable?
>>528067251In copyright law, a derivative work is an expressive creation that includes major copyrightable elements of a first, previously created original work (the underlying work). The derivative work becomes a second, separate work independent from the first. The transformation, modification or adaptation of the work must be substantial and bear its author's personality sufficiently to be original and thus protected by copyright. Translations, cinematic adaptations and musical arrangements are common types of derivative works.

now we're really ideating
Will you... collab with me!?
>>528068964I've had this exact conversation with ChatGPT lol. I bet it uses the word "Echoes" in at least one of its suggestions, doesn't it?
>>528069713And if you ask DeepSeek, it will use the phrase "A beat." for some reason. This is why AI will never replace human gamedevs.
>>528069713This time it didn't. But for the last year at least all the llms seem obsessed with echoes.
If you ever ask for a list of spells or cards or relics, it 100% has echoes in there. I don't know why it's so limited.
>>528069912Echoes and some vague concept of "witch gardening" where it talks about growing spells or enchanting plants etc. Always something about magical crops.

/agdg/ has no resources for game design because no one at /agdg/ knows how to design a game.
>>528073662>>528073842It got 25 during /v/3, and a bit more from Rising Tide. I don't have many wishlist because I'm not actively marketing a mostly incomplete game.
I am well aware that 300 wishlists over 5 months is poor performance. The fact that I have the performance I do with as little as I have done is surprising. It's not really as much of a "gotcha" you might think it is.
>>528073948Not as much as I should, but as above I'm not doing "wide swaths" of marketing. That is not currently my focus.
I could also be posting to youtube and devlogs there. Playing my own game on twitch. Posting constant updates on 30 discord servers (I currently do it to like 4.). Facebook, forums, instagram, tiktok, etc... None of that has been done.
I'll be some of that next week when the new demo is ready.

Now onto the topic of gamedev. I'm devving too slow right now. Sisters why must it be so!!!! I'm making progress, but it's just not enough! I need more knowledge and work ethic. Yet I get stalled so easily, a hard task and I may just end up making tiny bits of progress before doing something else entirely before coming, repeat until done.

I literally thought he was 26 at most.
>>528076696Np. You can also crawl through the free GDC Vault videos. Leagues of game designers, both legendary and relatively unknown indie, have given talks on design over the years. You can just find one with a topic that sounds cool or if its from a game designer you like. Some of them feel a bit stuffy imo, which studying "game design" as a subject has a tendency to become.. but at the end of the day it's not harmful to extract something out of the play experience and put it under an analytical microscope. Eventually design becomes pretty vibes based, but knowing these patterns and principles can help you get off the ground and build that intuition. Good luck
