Recommended game if I'm new to the series pls. I like the idea of fighting big monsters, but the slow combat looks off-putting. I think World is regarded as the best, Rise seems to be fastest combat and Wilds is a mix of both? Do I just get World due to it being cheaper and see how I feel. Do I get Iceborne later or is it needed from the start?
Why This Is a Massive Strategic Misstep
1. Zero Innovation
No new systems, no surprises, no new endgame loop additions, no changes to map structure or seasonal rotation. After months of backlash, this is effectively saying:
“We will keep doing the same thing, even if you hate it.”
2. The Monster Roster Remains Hollow
Even with two new monsters, Wilds will still have fewer repeatable monsters than World had even at launch — and significantly fewer “meaningful” hunts because:

World combat is very simple. I WANT to recommend World without buying Iceborne until you're done with base game stuff so that you can avoid a certain annoying mechanic Iceborne added, but I also feel like you should probably just get used to it. It's up to you whether or not you buy IB right away.
Rise is also good to start with. It has combat that is "less slow" but many those mechanics also dont really exist in other titles.
I'm not really into watching streams but the best thing you can do right now is to just 20 minutes of some random streamer playing World and Rise and see which one you like more.

>>528334056Well unless you literally cheat in resources you have to gather materials in every game. You cannot avoid that. As you play the game you'll learn where certains materials are and you'll usually just pick stuff up while you're chasing a monster to another zone.
That being said, those 'no commentary' videos are usually people who try to show as many details as possible as slowly as possible so people can just get how everything works.

First of all, the bad.
The monsters are way too easy. And this is due to two things.
First, this game added way too many gimmicks to the weapons and the fights themselves. Let's say that you were caught in a bad position by the monster. In world? Sheathe your weapon and hope for a superman dive, or try to hit the one invincibility frame in a roll, or have perfectly memorised breakpoints and know that your next hit will stagger the monster.
In wilds? Just counter it lol. Or just power clash lol. Or just call your seikret. Or just hit a wound. The greatsword was the greatest victim of this. From a weapon that required you to become intimate with the monster's movement, it turned into a weapon where you just spam counters and charged attacks, using focus mode to redirect your strikes and breaking wounds for instant TCS.
The fights no longer feel like a dance, or a fight for your survival, where the monster hunts you at the start, you are at a disadvantage, the attacks are aggressive and you can barely keep up, maybe it's even a new monster where you have yet to learn it's attacks...
Not anymore. Here you just walk up to a monster, and absolutely bully it. It attacks? Counter. It doesn't attack? Wound it. Exploit it. And due to that, it loses most of one of the core elements of the whole franchise, the relationship between a monster an a hunter.
Now, the ugly.
The performance. Oh dear lord the performance. This game, absolutely sucks. Probably the WORST game in terms of optimisation that I have seen.

22fps on high
20fps on ultra
Frame gen got me to some 40fps at best during cut scenes. Yet my friend with a 3060ti ran the game at some 80fps with frame gen.
Game looks atrocious.
Game runs atrocious.
Gameplay is dull compared to previous titles.
And yet the masses gobbled it up, and so the slop fest continues. We'll get a crappy handheld game in 4 years, then maybe another terribly optimised mainline game in 8 years. Hooray

broadly speaking, i prefer weapons that don't need downtime management, like grinding materials for ammo. i like ones that are reliable. imho that's my biggest complaint about greatsword: if i play it on my steam deck (which i do about half the time), the aiming on it with the auto-aim is not very reliable.
i wouldn't dislike something more technical. it's just my opinion but... i think that i learned positioning and timing pretty well with greatsword, so combining that foundation with a technical weapon could be pretty fun. but i'll listen to any suggestion.

Monster Hunter Wilds is fundamentally flawed even beyond the game running like hot garbage.
Engagement with the game's core systems is difficult, ironically, because of the lack of difficulty, and if anything is actually difficult to engage with, its because of arbitrary tedium such as requiring literal hundreds of tickets that are all shared by the final upgrades of each weapon or needing to meticulously grind trading items in order to have a steady supply of cooking ingredients (which were unlimited use in all previous games mind you) in spite of the game's insistence on having your Seikret automatically taxi you to the target monster at all times instead of having you explore the world at your own pace. The game's current lack of content and the slow churn of the title updates leaves the experience feeling hollow, a shell of what it could be, and the performance issues only exacerbate that sentiment.

This game is just a $70 early-access demo and a glorified marketing campaign for Iceborne and Sunbreak. Come back in 5 years and Wilds might become a decent game with a reasonable price then.

In any case, there's not going to be as much focus on environment like World but the maps do have plenty of stuff hidden around them to encourage exploration. Most of that stuff is gameplay-oriented like finding different routes to get to the monster quickly or endemic life to use in combat though. Hunting the monsters is first and foremost in Rise, and the number of tools you have to do so increases the further you get into the game. Many of those tools can completely change how you play a weapon, which is why experimenting with different weapons is better than it's ever been in Rise and also part of why people prefer Sunbreak; along with it having better monster fights and not having some of base Rise's more questionable additions like rampages. I wouldn't skip base Rise, it's a good opportunity to learn the weapons and there are still some decent hunts in there. Plenty of monsters worth hunting for decos too, which are still useful in Sunbreak Just don't spend too long in low rank village, it is an absolute joke. The credits rolling means you completed the tutorial.

My Zinogre evolved into Stygian Zinogre if anyone cares... And yes that is Forest and Hills area 1 as background. I think you can unlock more backgrounds by using the fight option, I also have a Shrine Ruins background after I killed a Khezu but then my Zinogre got btfo by a Green Narga, and I don't want it to die so I just kept it save for now :)
