I have to agree and I even give 343 some small credit for attempting (if failing) to try something about this. To continue that fighting analogy, I'm okay with the game's precision-headshot being A or S tier. But the other non-power weapons better at least be A tier or B tier. There are weapons like the Assault Rifle in many halos without a niche at all. Like said, in 2 and 3 a Battle Rifle can destroy you faster in the same ranges the game's UNSC automatic can.

I laugh when people say dual wielding is broken. No grenades for weapons that have nothing close to a Battle Rifle's range? Sure, MintBlitz clearing entire free-for-alls was TOTALLY dual wielding the whole time. Hell, if dual wielding ever returns and is 2 or 3 exactly, it would be almost useless.

Reach adding bloom to try and avoid the long-range poking of BRs but then giving DMR accurate longer-range first shots should tell you everything you need to know about Bungie weapon design.
Halo is solid, Halo 2 is salvaged by BR starts then everything after that is some weaker variation of Halo 2 without understanding the whys.

The BR is what started the cancer killing Halo. It introduced the series to the forced teamshot meta which is boring to watch. It was better in CE when the pistol could win fights for you and you weren't so reliant on your teammates. And I'm still salty about H4 competitive going with BR starts over the DMR due to some stupid nostalgia reasons even though it was objectively the worst precision rifle they could have chosen to start with.

This is why some tried other crap but it never worked out. The Halo 5 beta attempted to change the AR by giving the AR a headshot bonus and tuning it so that accurate shots were possible, and it did work to a degree, but it was admittedly a bit OP and people bitched that their precious BR wasn't capable of solving every problem for them so it mostly got removed. All that did was reduce the skillgap with the AR and make spray and prayers less punished in comparison. They could've tweaked it and it would've been better but no, it was beta only.

This is what I mean when I say I give 343 credit for trying and failing. Are they still morons? Yes. But even when they get ideas with potential and need tweaking, it just gets dropped.

Once upon a time, we got a Plasma weapon that doesn't do more damage to shields. I get it's the Covenant AR but it didn't have any niche. Did they expect players to swap to it to finish after shield busting given it does more unshielded damage than shielded? Like a weird pseudo noob combo after EMPing? I don't know how the thought process went.

Reach would be well-balanced if the AR killed in 16 bullets instead of 19. It's not enough to make it stupidly powerful like in Halo 5 or Infinite, but it would be enough to outclass the DMR up close.

I actually second this. Once on Reach Heroic I felt on trying new weapons and using the Spiker was better against shields than the AR. Marginally better and I wouldn't use it on Legendary but it just highlights to me how many weapons are outclassed by the DMR AND how many weapons outclass the AR at the same time.

Has there been a game that captures the mood of Reach but executes it better? The desperate last stand against overwhelming odds while you play as a stoic badass, preferably with a team of badasses who slowly die, one by one. It's so masculine, I love it but no game hits the notes correctly. The heroes joke around too much or they're too inexperienced. You're not usually allowed to be the best of the best. I wanna be a professional.

Reach has the perfect atmosphere but the story lacks in writing. The team is underwritten. All missions are just generic destroy this thing missions which is exactly what I want but that does mean the characters have to carry the story and for some reason Reach doesn't use their down time to expand on the characters. I don't need backstories but I would like to see more interactions so the eventual deaths hit harder. Turn it up a notch just a little. Not too much but a little.

Halo 3: ODST Mythic Overhaul isn't very good.
Sure, it has Elites and Marines on Mombasa Streets, but it's basically the only thing it does well. Oh and the universal ammo box for specific ammo types are great.

Man, Spartan IIIs are so cool, especially the ones in SPI armor. I still can't believe we didn't get them in Reach. All those Spartan IIIs and they had to go and give them normal MJOLNIR armor with the normal Spartan II shields. I was so excited for SPI armor. It's one of the few things I appreciate 343 doing. the sprint is a non issue. it makes you marginally faster, which is useful at high levels of play, but irrelevant at all other levels. clamber enables more use of the map without completely destroying the point of covers (like jetpacks in reach do). the weapons all serve a purpose and are all viable. there are no loadouts, no ordinance shit, vehicles are great but have good counters that rely on people to know where to retrieve them and fight over them and control them. the actual issues of dropped inputs, bad netcoding, being shot around walls, etc have been largely fixed. so what's the problem?

Battlefield isn't the same. Controls are clunkier and things just blow up when they collide, and the health systems are different. Fortnite and maybe War Thunder are probably the closest you can get to Big Team Battle/Heavies, but Fortnite's controls are clunkier than Battlefield's and the collision boxes on everything are awful so sometimes you run into the same issues with Halo Infinite where you get clipped by random clutter on the ground because the collision is not accurate (sometimes the collision boxes extend out into empty space but the visual 3D model is smaller, fooling you into thinking you avoided hitting it but then boom and you're flipped over but then the game auto-flips you back right-side up, taking the fun out it). And War Thunder doesn't have any infantry combat, and the physics are really toned down for a more realistic (and less fun) feel. But it does feel like you're playing Big Team Heavies which is nice.

One of the best things about H1 is its map variety, you can see it's made for party play just looking at the maps. Relatively basic maps built around one or two concepts and the desire for those concepts to be different enough on each map. It's not so much "this map plays Halo better than another map" just each map giving a different experience. I don't think a map like Chiron TL-34 gets made in an online play environment.
