>>528582068Yeah, I was actually able to beat the orc campaign on my first try while I keep dying in the main one as soon as I enter T3.

They call it tome because it takes a lot of time to beat
>>528583296if you're the anon from earlier who described his experiences
hoard lighting res items specifically for urkis even if it's worse than your usual gear
don't enter the dark crypt in general unless you're experienced
movement infusions are amazing, don't be afraid to run away
shatter afflictions runes are also amazing, getting cc'd is death
I'd also look for a trinket that can cleanse confusion
Try changing up your skill order. Generally you want to always be casting something. So if you find everything on cooldown, get more skills, if you've got things off cooldown constantly you might've spread too thin.
normal difficulty is consistently a breeze once you understand a class's strengths and play to them
>>528583770Yeah I am that anon. Hoarding resistance gear was chatgpt’s advice when I told it about dying to Urkis so I did hoard resistance gear on the runs where I died to the dark crypt and the randboss animated weapon in a sealed area in the ruined halfling complex. The dark crypt death I did put on all my blight resist gear but that wasn’t enough to stand up to silence (which disables runes btw I found that out there, which is the one case where a wild rune would be better than shatter afflictions) and the sheer burst damage that chest rare in the dark crypt had. And I kinda knew it was a mistake to go in there given the zone order progression said to do it at the very end of T3 and that it was especially lethal for melee classes, but I got FOMO especially because it’s necessary for the doomelf unlock and up until that point my doombringer was annihilating effortlessly so I felt confident. Probably for my next run though I won’t take any risks. No sealed doors, no chests/digestivesacks, no dungeons out of recommended zone order even if you can only encounter them once, because that’s almost always what kills me, Urkis was the only time I can remember that I was killed by something other than an optional challenge.
>>528547464It's fairly easy to get infinite stats and mutation/license points in the long run, so your starting build can be whatever.
the funny thing about hoarding resist gears against Urkis is, it's wrong
You should be able to figure out why as an exercise.
>>528585184Because he has built in lightning pen? It's still worth it
>it's still worth it
Your next homework is to prove that resistance to effective HP is a superlinear relationship
If you're dying to Urkis, it's not the lack of resistance that kills you.
>>528574579Any non-joppa start just gives you a randomly generated village with 2 randomly generated quests. Same quests you get in any other random village (go to the sacred office chair and sit in it, desecrate a shrine etc) except one of them gives you a recoiler and the grit gate data disc to start the main quest. I would not recommend it unless you know what you're doing as these quest are in no way balanced to be doable for a level 1 character since they are random. You could be sent to a goatfolk village for your recoiler quest and good luck doing that at the start.
>>528585184Aren't you just supposed to CC him to death? Or does that stop working beyond normal?
>>528585868I'm not dying to urkis and I've beaten insane
>>528586149The easiest way to kill him is just to do damage to him, he has 0 HP.
The easiest way to survive him is to make sure to cleanse the lightning per turn damage.
>>528586202I have beaten Insane roguelike on every class and I have never had an issue with his damage. It is pointless to build (regular) resistance against enemies with penetration because the gears that you equip are just worse than say, +HP items and +damage items.
A comparison is those elder vampires in Dreadfell or the Master, they both have penetration stats. Building resist vs them is consistently pointless.
(Ethereal Form doesn't count for this, it ignores penetration)
My favorite moment in Embers of Rage is when I entered the final floor and the game spawns a randboss Titan right in front of me (great procgen dark god) and it was a marauder with 70% physical pen
So it one tapped me for x3 my max hp even when I was at 70% physical resist (god bless Yeti racial).
Penetration is the most retarded damage stat in the game, there's a reason in the base campaign you always cap it at the reroll machine before other stat like crit damage. All enemies get 70% resist starting at Pride and they all melt just the same as long as you have penetration.

(I also refused to put any block in the deck until recently though, I got a 5 winstreak now)
>complexComplexity doesn't matter as much since tome is highly deterministic between leveling and between how much loot you get (for reference, I think half of my melee runs in base campaign finished with Dakh'tun's Gauntlets, which is a rare T5 artifact). With good classes I think I can win 90% of the run consistently and with bad classes like Cursed probably 20%, or 50% if I'm patient enough.
In StS everything is random and the game is snowbally as hell, getting win consistently (i.e. actually keeping track of your losses) is difficult
Keep in mind that in StS there are people with 80-95% winrate on A20 heart kill, so the game is highly skill based, just also very broad and random at the same time
>>528590159When I unlocked Cursed, I took at look at the talents on the wiki, and after I finished reading it I thought “That’s it? >>528635578>action roguelike Watch your language
Skyrim is an action roguelike
how fun would a complex medical/HP system in a roguelike actually is
most simply have HP and status effects like bleeding whatever
I want to make a system with body parts: head, body, separate arms and legs
there will be various armor plates you can put on each limb to protect against various damage though they're essentially tiers of protection
each limb can be bleeding (capillary, venous or arterial by terms of damage dealt, lose blood each turn you have bleedings on your body, lose too much = die), an HP bar, embedded objects (multiple even, if you were hit by a burst fire lol), and bruises
if hit by the right damage type and the damage is enough and the organ is vital you die instantly (e.g. piercing damage to the body/head)
there will be four damage types:
blunt (bruises, if high dmg cause bleeding, cause pain and reduces your aim, damage in melee/ranged), pierce (high chance to kill, causes venous and arterial bleedings), slash (kinda the same but less bleeding), bullet (three classes: rubber less-lethal rounds, pistol and rifle rounds, each projectile has a mass and a velocity so muzzle energy is taken into play)
all damage types will be influenced by the limb they hit and the armor is on
is this too complex to be fun? do I just make an HP bar?
>>528640290Have fun coding that for five years
you should make each body part a pocket and each turn a simulation is done in each pocket
For example the head pocket holds brain, eye balls, teeth and such
If you get shot in the head then now the head holds a bullet and blood flow can be congested.
When you drink alcohol the substance goes to the brain pocket and cause erratic brain activity.
When you go to surgeons they can perform services such as removing specific chemical, substance or physical object from your brain. Each healing item will also serve only 1 specific purpose (for example bandages will stop your brain pocket from leaking blood but has no effect on other injuries)
Then you can make some organs mini pockets too like the heart and if you get micro plastic they can enter these pockets and cause long term damage.
>>528640290Stoneshard has body health system where each bodypart is protected by different armor pieces and you have to use different types of medical items to heal body parts. I guess you could pirate it and see how you like that system. To me it just feels like pointless busy work.
>>528640493literally non-issue

never settle, fellas
shame whores, improve yourself, pray you find a virgin
ok I decided I'm gonna settle on something like this:
HP
blood (basically HP 2. you will slowly lose it when bleeding but to regain you need to be satiated and drink lots of water and rest. yes, there will be food farming and hydration yay or nay. so that there's a limit on how far you can go, 0 blood = death. well, actually it's not zero but the amount below that you will lose consciousness but 0-100 is easier for a game instead of 5000 ml and <2700 ml)
armor pieces are equipped in various slots (helmet, armor, pants. ok, maybe no pants but just ARMOR for now, we'll see about that)
"hard" armor - reduces damage directly
"soft" armor - multiplies damage after hard reduction, e.g. 30% defense to ballistic w/e
bleeding status (can be major or small, basically a number that is subtracted from your blood. mainly for melee)
embedded status (how many bullets are in your body, removing them takes a while as to limit combat tanking)
pain status (the more pain there is the worse are melee / ranged rolls. some items will help to negate pain completely or reduce it. pain is calculated from the amount of bleedings, embedded objects and recent damage. each turn some of the RECENT pain goes away but pain from bleedings / embedded is constant as long as they are present. pain can be negative from items and stat buffs (high MPV)
stats:
MPV muscle power vitality - melee damage, HP, blood, flat pain resistance bonus
CRD coordination - ranged damage (aim yo shit), ranged hit chance (you can miss), melee hit chance
WIA willpower insight awareness - ??? not decided yet but it's totally required
how does this sound fellow autists

Kenzie's passive is more effective dodge than before because weight penalties in the beta are more than doubled, and victoria's bonus range directly translates into more damage under the new falloff formula. Percy's resistance/HP now matters less because damage is restrained by effective ranges, so it mainly matters in CQC engagements instead of in all engagements.

>>528640290>do I just make an HP bar?Yeah I think so. Seeking realism is usually not so great. Oftentimes you get stuck in a situation where one feature being highly realistic ends up clashing with the rest of the game, which is not operating under the same realism framework, or else you're forced to start simulating everything else that tangentially interacts with that "realistic" feature, and now you're making a simulation not necessarily a video game.
I would say try looking at it from the player experience first and foremost, and then expand outwards from there. Just imagine what way you'd want combat to feel for the player, and then only add realism to the extent that it makes that gameplay feature fun/enjoyable.

What's up with the newer DCSS? I haven't ever spent much time looking into who is doing most of the contributions but it seems like a huge tone shift occurred in the last 2-3yrs. A lot of the new stuff in the game seems like... idk needlessly complicated for no real reason. Especially with spellcasting. No longer can you just like, summon an ally, there's all this stuff like "must be adjacent for x turns to an egg that also has an enemy standing with 2 tiles too" or "you have to stand still while winding it up for y turns before it attacks for (y/3 + skill * 1) seconds or whatever. Also what even are all these races now? I'm not mad just confused at what they're going for here.

On the topic of forks, anon here from last thread who was just getting back into DCSS after a long time and trying Kimchi. I really like it, pretty much everything I remember is still there with *some* quality of life changes like extended inventory space (via a 'bag' item u can just drop if unwanted), also cursed items appear identified some % of the time and basic ammo seems to be very plentiful. There is a lot of new content as well which I assume is a mixture of both new main fork stuff I had never played + some custom stuff, particularly races but the big thing is it has literally all the removed races/classes and the old school versions of spells. It feels basically just like playing 2011 DCSS with a bunch of solid mod content (which for me was absolutely peak, compared with what the .31 looks like, which seems more concerned with precise balance for competitive play vs. a more classic and pure dungeon crawling vibe. and bcrawl sounds like another option but with more fundamental gameplay changes to classic crawl, I haven't tried it). Can't rec this one any more, after maybe 20 to 30ish hours of play had no issues. The only downside is that it appears to be somewhat abandoned (github active though? but no updates since 2021) so gonna have to play it as-is.
>>528717872>>528717872based i been wanting to play kimchi crawl for years but havent gotten around to it yet. was actually just looking at the github for it earlier today. He was extremely fun to play as a DeepDwarf Evoker. Getting rod of clouds or w/e was such an insane power increase moment, easily one of the most fun runs i've ever did.
New crawl may be more "balanced" or w/e for comp but man old crawl just had broken stupid stuff that felt amazing once you got to midgame/early late game.

>>528677085If you just make your character with every category no higher than "average" it's basically like the old point system. although for whatever reason a lot of the combat skills don't affect any of those values at all, so you can literally set them to 10 and it won't change anything. I guess social skills and the ability to sew clothing are more significant capabilities than skill with a rifle in the apocalypse. I keep them 0 or 1 to compensate.
ngl they should cut all of the crafting skills and make them into proficiencies instead, it's retarded how I can grind fabrication to 10 by making a series of bows out of sticks and string. and they should consolidate the combat skills, having submachine guns, rifles and shotguns as three distinct skills is retarded. It should be long guns/handguns at most for gun skills.

multiple armor slots yay or nay?
I'm leaning towards having three slots: helmet, armor and accessory slot (for energy shields that block bullets and make melee viable, because when both parties have these you have to resort to melee or throw grenades at each other)
>>528778067I'd suggest starting with few slots and increasing/splitting them as the itemization pool expands in size and complexity. Having 5 different sources of +1 AC is mostly just pointless dress-up.
>>528778067I also plan to have 4 damage type with corresponding hard and soft armor types:
blunt - rubber bullets and melee
slash - melee
pierce - some melee (polearms, rapiers..), arrows and high mass bullets (several of the guns where bullet mass exceeds 40g, mainly anti material rifles)
bullet - bullets
does this sound interesting
I can also post the various skills if anyone is interested
>>528778497yeah I'll probably go with that

>>528778587>pierce - some melee (polearms, rapiers..), arrows and high mass bullets (several of the guns where bullet mass exceeds 40g, mainly anti material rifles)>bullet - bulletsthis effectively means that you can either defeat an end game enemy with a personal shield with a bow, a melee weapon or an AM rifle
though bows will have less damage than an AM rifle and melee will require enough strength stat
>>528776993you're still dodging the fact that you don't know what a roguelike is, lil bro
>>528778746>this effectively means that you can either defeat an end game enemy with a personal shield with a bow, a melee weapon or an AM rifle>though bows will have less damage than an AM rifle and melee will require enough strength statnow that I think about it it doesn't make any sense from a physics standpoint because what matters is muzzle energy (kinetic energy) because the shield effectively needs to output enough magical energy to stop the round and its power is capped BUT it absolutely fails at deflecting melee (still blocks some damage)
if muzzle energy matters then arrows are useless and normal rifle rounds should be able to go through
it makes it less interesting
should arrows be able to pierce personal shields
I could just make various types of personal shields with different joule stats (muzzle energy of round it is rated for), then I can properly incorporate my gun autism with specific bullet masses and velocities for both real and fictional guns
>>528778587>bullet - bulletsGood idea to separate bullet damage from melee types, especially true for JHP, might also call it internal damage or maybe "rupture" if you want to have some other weapons do similar damage.
For example the wasp knife that injects compressed air has similar enough effect on soft tissues.
>high mass bulletsThere's a subset of modernish small caliber firearms specifically designed to penetrate body armor. Downside is they have very little stopping power.
>>528774141Yes, nobody ever cared about modality in the sense you're thinking of it. Not even berliners.

>>528779614>Good idea to separate bullet damage from melee types, especially true for JHP, might also call it internal damage or maybe "rupture" if you want to have some other weapons do similar damage.oh yeah I'll totally have different bullets, soft point, plastic point, JHP, it's all in the design doc
>There's a subset of modernish small caliber firearms specifically designed to penetrate body armor. Downside is they have very little stopping power.the chinese have designed a cartridge similar to the 5.7, it's 5.8x21mm, 3g at 480m/s steel core, it's in the gaaame cuz it's set in eastern siberia (near china, but lore is another matter)
what do you think about this
>>528779412basically, there's a MAGIC (absolutely magic, it's not possible, but good for game's sake) accessory called the personal shield (totally not ripped from another game made by a Russian junkie who I greatly admire)
the problem is that I want it to be penetrable by high mass projectiles only which makes it penetrable by arrows and makes sense that melee weapons would shred through it but that makes 0 sense because KINETIC energy matters, so normal rifle rounds which have 3 kJ should be able to go through
>>528779928sadly the setting is hard sci fi (stuff that's definitely possible but the chance is really low, and I'm walking on edge with shit like personal shields, maybe if there were superconductors it'd be possible irl?)

>>528780189okay actually it's even more complex
if we assume that it's an EM field then shields:
deflect jacketed bullets since they have copper
slightly deflect all lead bullets because lead is slightly influenced by magnets
wooden arrows go through completely
I just want to have different damtypes with the shield giving high protection against bullets but not piercing damage, with arrows, some strong bullets and melee having the piercing damage

It's "realistic" for gloves on your hands to make it harder to craft things, but it's also very easy to assume that your character would simply take their gloves off to craft whatever it is you are trying to craft. Both approaches are perfectly realistic, but forcing the player to go through menu navigation twice to take gloves off and put them back on again just to emulate the "realism" in a clumsy way is aids. And what gameplay is that added effort from the player serving? Making sure you are accurately penalized for trying to craft in the middle of an ice lab where assuming you take your gloves off would mean you get frostbite on your fingers? It's completely asinine.
>>528782187Doesn’t feel that way to me. In Tome you do the same dungeons every time, the only variation is trying out the different classes. In Qud it’s always a new experience after the first few scripted quests.
>>528783292Realism that doesn't serve an explicit gameplay purpose just creates walking simulators like Unreal World.
>>528783259Oh yeah I remember now, I forgot about it since it was only mentioned in that one post, hmm, I think he might have taken too much onto his plate and that’s why we haven’t heard from him in 2 years. Hell one of the expansions might have been scrapped already.
>>528785496Tome's variance comes from resource generation, enemy generation (on higher difficulties), and encounter layout generation. The same dungeon each time isn't actually the same, and the same character each time isn't actually the same, though it does have a bit of the Angband build collapse problem.
Tome's earlygame is so repetitive because the player has so few tools, and the encounters are likewise limited to account for that. Qud is no different in this respect.
>>528782253just give up, lil bro. Your embarrassing yourself
>>528785491>>528785534I need to make a choice: there are two approaches I can take for a single item type
there will be an item that is designed to block bullets magically, it isn't possible irl (energy shield)
there are two approaches I can take
the simple and unrealistic one is to just make the shield an armor piece just like others that gives armor to specific damage type
say it will give 50 defense from bullet damtype which will render guns useless against you forcing the enemies to melee
here's the thing: this approach allows me to easily make weapons/ammo that bypasses the shield by simply assigning a different damage type
for example, anti material high mass bullets will have PIERCING damage (just like melee weapons which the shield DOESN'T protect from), arrows will also have it and etc, but NOT bullets
but the thing is
I could make another approach with muzzle energy which is more realistic
all bullets have a specific muzzle energy that is derived from bullet mass and velocity
let's say the shield protects up to 3000 joules which is a lot, that's most rifle rounds
so the logic for the shield is going to be more complex: it is now not a simple armor piece, but it has new logic
when a PROJECTILE hits the shield it gets the projectile type:
0 - non magnetic, completely passes through (arrows, since they're either wooden or carbon fiber)
1 - semi magnetic, randomly halves the muzzle energy decreasing damage (lead only bullets)
2 - magnetic, deflected completely (copper jacketed bullets)
if the projectile is semi magnetic or magnetic and has a higher muzzle energy than the shield rating (some rifle rounds are 3200 joules leaving 200 joules, 200 joules is quite lethal, anti-materiel rounds are fucking 32000 so that just instakills you) the muzzle energy is decreased by shield rating and the damage is recalculated
>>528787226as you can see the second approach creates some player-facing challenges like sourcing specific ammo types against enemies using shields
and the second approach STILL doesn't explain why you would be able to melee it because melee weapons are made out of steel and generally have the same muzzle energy (though the energy is spread over the blade? what about spears?)
>>528786929Attention-starved zoomer.
>>528787226first of all this isn't even a question of realism because you are talking about a fantasy technology. You can make that fantasy technology anything you want it to be in the setting to fit whatever mechanic you want.
second this fixation on kinetic energy is totally misplaced imo, kinetic energy even when applied only within the regime of bullets is far from an accurate representation of almost anything about bullet performance. e.g. you can have an extremely heavy bullet at a slow velocity and a light bullet at a higher velocity that have the same kinetic energy but will have vastly different performance on target. The heavy slow bullet will penetrate a million feet of ballistic gel without being deflected or destoryed and the high velocity bullet will penetrate steel armor plate that the heavy bullet will barely dent.
I think if you want to have the shield thing where it protects differently against various weapons I would make it as simple as possible, especially for the player that isn't going to know or care about kinetic energy calculations. For example make the shields stop handgun bullets but not stop rifle bullets or anything stronger, or you could do the inverse so it's like the Dune shields where they selectively affect higher velocities, or anything in between.
>>528787710what's your favourite roguelike, fren?
>>528788050If he’s the guy who said its only a real roguelike if its ascii, then I’d bet its Microsoft Excel
>>528787984wait, shields are from DUNE? now I know where they stolen from (I'm stealing the bullet shield idea from another game that apparently stole it from dune because it was influenced by it too)

yeah I agree
and you know what? reading /k/ DIDN'T FUCKING HELP

I guess I'll go with the second approach it's simpler
just make the shield do a flat damage reduction and a percentage one maybe too (because I have two armor types, "hard" one and "soft" one which is percentage)
thank you for your input
>>528787226I'd say as a rule just start with the simple and functional method and leave open the possibility of reworking it to be more granular if the situation eventually calls for it. The most successful games are ones that are straightforward but have interesting innovations on a fundamental level, there's no need for grandiosity in the current environment.
>>528788435first approach*
>>528788490I could rewrite it any time, true
the only innovation my game currently has is that it's an open world like ADOM or qud but without the overmap (e.g. you travel manually) and the map is big
>>528787696What if super weak version of energy shields is so abundant and ubiquitous any human opponent is expected to have one, and shields negate each other regardless of power so melee and point blank shots always work?
>>528788308a real roguelike should be able to be played ascii. I've got no problem with tiles. The point is that the game is grid-based with simultaneous actions. You can slap whatever pretty tileset you want on top of the ascii, but the ascii should be the base
>>528786327That’s one of the reasons the earlygame is repetitive, the other reason is that if you’re playing as intended (roguelike mode), then its what you’re going to be replaying the most often.
>>528788435>and you know what? reading /k/ DIDN'T FUCKING HELP/k/ is like the last place to find useful technical info about firearms, especially today where it's a shitty slow version of /pol/ or /int/. >>528779614Anyway, the tl;dr of bullets is that pistols and shotgun projectiles are very slow, and rifle bullets are fast. Rifle rounds are 2x-3x the speed of pistol and shotgun rounds, and speed it what defeats IRL armor, fictional energy shields are a completely different story.
The 5.7 thing you are talking about is a confusing topic, because armor in the 5.7 context isn't the same thing as armor generally. 5.7 is the same weight class as a pistol round so it is hopeless at defeating real armor, rifle plates and steel armored vehicles, when they say that 5.7 is armor penetrating what they are talking about is that it can defeat SOFT armor, aka vests made of kevlar or dyneema fabric. Any rifle round can defeat soft armor naturally but slow rounds like pistols and shotguns can't, which is what makes 5.7 and rounds like it "armor piercing", it can defeat simple armor that regular pistols cannot. That being said there is such a thing as 9mm AP rounds for example that can also beat soft armor.
>>528789205>and speed it what defeats IRL armorspeed is*

>>528788435>wait, shields are from DUNE?yeah the shields in dune iirc stop high velocity projectiles but not slow ones. which is why they use melee weapons, guns are useless in that context.
kinda sorta makes sense too since the faster an object moves the resistance to it is exponentially higher, 2x velocity means 4x the air resistance.
>>528789712>yeah the shields in dune iirc stop high velocity projectiles but not slow ones. which is why they use melee weapons, guns are useless in that context.>kinda sorta makes sense too since the faster an object moves the resistance to it is exponentially higher, 2x velocity means 4x the air resistance.holy shit that makes so much sense
>>528789604Dark days ahead
>>528789643>(and it's fmj and not AP, meaning it has a steel core)if you want to get even more confused here AP doesn't necessarily mean steel core. M855 is steel core and it isn't AP, because it's simply mild steel core. Steel core AP ammo has hardened tool steel penetrators, but that's also old technology at this point. Modern military AP ammo instead uses tungsten carbide penetrators. Very expensive.
>>528789965yeah tungsten is in my list as an endgame AP bullet
but now that I've heard the dune explanation I wonder if I should even make super powerful rounds be able to go through shields
I guess it's good from a gameplay standpoint?
>>528788649How the game plays and how much personal effort it will take to get the game to play that way, or to thereafter make adjustments to it, is the most important thing you want to be looking at in any decision when making a roguelike. Nobody plays Roguelikes for the lore.
>>528790267All I can say is in my cataclysm experience AP rounds like like health potion in an rpg, you hoard them and get so used to hoarding them that reach the end of the game and notice you have a mountain of health potion. And like I said earlier most regular people have literally zero concept of what armor piercing ammo even is or why it's necessary, let alone adding hollow points, match ammo and everything else to that list.
To keep it simple I would arrange it by class of weapon sort of like the dune example. rifles = fast, pistols/shotguns = slow, melee = slowest. Then you can make the shields affect those categories any way you want.
>>528788649>>528790457In fact, lore is an active hindrance to roguelike development, because the moment someone comes up and says "This mechanic is badly designed and ruins the gameplay experience" and you respond with "that's how it works in the lore, too bad", your name will become Kevin Granade.
>>528789205>since he post a screencap of a docgkr post lmaoI got that screencap somewhere on 4chan years ago.
I'm just obsessed with useless trivia, rumors and opinions on rare and unusual firearms, more interested in mechanical engineering, handling, service, ergonomics than bullet performance.
>>528790649>rifles = fast, pistols/shotguns = slow, melee = slowest.the problem is that with the simple armor system it's not possible, I'd then need to add two new damage types: fast bullets and slow bullets
then it works: 100 defense from fast bullets and 30 from slow ones
then assign fast bullet damage type to rifle ammo and slow damage type to shotguns and pistols
>>528790764I don't want to become Kevin.. this is why I share my thoughts here, to receive feedback
>>528786327>The same dungeon each time isn't actually the sameNot in any meaningful way since you’re auto-exploring most of the time for everything until maybe t3.
> the same character each time isn't actually the sameIf you want to play a fire archmage it’s pretty much going to be the same build every time regardless of what gear you find. It’s not like DCSS where loot and spell books might influence your build.
>>528790921interesting, well if you care I'll tell you that guy is like the only real resource on wound ballistics that is on the internet at all today. he's an IRL doctor and was an associate of some of the biggest name guys who developed most of the info on wound ballistics in the last 30 or so years that is still in use today. He posts on gun forums occasionally, I don't know how active he still is.
Outside of reading his forum posts your only way to get real info on wound ballistics is to consult the technical literature like I said earlier, if you can even find it that is.
>>528791208The character building in Tome being too rigid is one of the complaints I have against it, but it does still have some variance in the sense that finding certain equipment or infusions can change when your power spikes, and uniques/randbosses can change when the difficulty spikes.
I think we’ve officially talked about everything there is to say about roguelikes. Show of hands to end rlg
>>528788435>they all argue about shit and can't fucking agree if whether 5.7 is fucking a good round or notalso the disagreement about 5.7 is about its wounding performance. There's no debate about its capability at defeating soft armor, the question is how it does it. To get the velocities needed to reliably defeat soft armor without exotic projectiles you need to reduce the diameter of the bullet. Reducing the diameter of the bullet like that has a different significance for pistols than with rifles because pistol rounds are not fast or massive enough to cause the types of wounding that rifles do, pistols only poke holes in people. So the substantially smaller bullet diameter means you have substantially less damage on target shot for shot with a 5.7 vs a 9mm all in the name of defeating soft body armor that isn't terribly common in the first place.
tl;dr 5.7 beats kevlar vests but pokes smaller holes in people making each shot individually less lethal than a comparable conventional pistol round.
>>528779614>fudd wall of textNow is this any different from any other caliber short of .308 (maybe, at minimum)?
Cops have to magdump meth'd out niggers routinely with their 9mm/.40, and whole books have been written on how bad 5.56's lethality is.

1. Its MUCH harder, I haven’t beat either RW but I’m going through the Achra cycles at a steady pace
2. Moment-to-moment gameplay matters a whole lot, one mistake will kill you, unlike achra where many builds can hold one button the entire time

I never really thought of it much but really being blind they have a lot more excuse and need for escapism than almost anyone else, also if you think about it you can come up with a lot of enhanced immersion when visual effects are no longer required. I'd think /rlg/ of all places would be more in support of that kind of thing since roguelikes in general sort of work off that same principle of not needing impressive (or any) graphics. It is weird how this strange culture came into being where many devs fetishize accessibility and disabilities. Really unusual. Its created a sort of inverted social pyramid where being more disabled equates to higher status.

Should baby slime be unable to spawn on vehicle tiles?
Their spawming in enclosed vehicles is clearly a bug and with enclosed space combat rules is increasingly a problem.
having no bash is the defining characteristic of slime, a bug which allows them to spawn through barriers significantly undermines a good macro strat. The game is too micro oriented, too much micro abuse, not enough actual strategy.
Some macrostrat ideas:
Science ID cards bound to specific labs, to stop players hoarding them
Millitary ID cards have clearance levels. like the Xedra cards, should be universal.
Wasps fear any and all fire and sources of high heat. make them move off hot tiles, at night they should avoid, not come to light.
Trifids should be blind, only some of the sentry-type trifids should be able to see.
There needs to be building materials which resist impact/cutting/grinding/explosions.
HESCO/hardened cement/reinforced cement/ ablative armor. this diversity would make single barrier challenges more interesting, and multi-barrier challenges less easily abused.
I work 12 hours overnight thankfully I work from home on this night. Roguelikes are perfect because if I end up getting a call or having to actually do my job I can easily stop on a dime and continue again without any issues. another poll, does this equipment layout sound nice:
two weapon slots:
weapon slot
quivered slot
three equipment slots:
helmet
armor
accessory
now, the quivered slot is both for grenades and ammo (since there is more than one ammo type for each weapon, like FMJ JHP AP whatever. to choose which you are going to load just quiver it and press R. if the ammo is already loaded you can press S (alt. item action) to unload the gun. also, there will be no ammo mixing sadly so if you have 1 JHP round and 30 FMJ you'll first need to fire JHP then reload. if no ammo is quivered when reloaded the first one in inventory will be used. bows will act the same, preferring arrows in the quiver slot, if it's empty or has a grenade the first arrow stack in inventory will be used)
>>528898772BN
>>528898224the activation thing for grenades is more of a safety for the player I think. To prevent you from accidentally activating it when you were trying to eat or something.
You're right that it could be simplified by simply having grenades auto activate when you throw them.
As for the delay sometimes it's very helpful. like when you throw a grenade at a turret then sprint to safety.
>>528899013>the activation thing for grenades is more of a safety for the player I think. To prevent you from accidentally activating it when you were trying to eat or something.it'd be not required at all if activating grenade item did nothing
I think it's simpler when you just press T throwing the grenade and it explodes INSTANTLY
like
the delay only makes sense for edge cases when the enemies are far away (due to the large world and the chunking algorithm, you can't see very far in my game, e.g. look mode is restricted to the current viewport)

Getting teleported by a hag then immediately blinded so I can't teleport back and poisoned so I can't heal sucked
okay I'm actually kinda lazy so the control scheme is as follows:
you select items from the inventory then press W to equip
equipped items can't be scrolled through as they are separate from the inventory (I don't like it but it's the only easy way, I want to ship a game..)
buttons 1-5 are to unequip items, (1 is weapon, 2 is quiver, 3 is helmet, 4 is armor, 5 is accessory)
it sounds really weird I wonder if it'll be comfortable

Anyone ever play the netrunner android card game? I always thought something like that would make a good roguelike.
>play as the netrunner trying to hack into the corporate servers
>each time you jack in, it manifests as a dungeon
>based on the type, ICE can either manifest as bosses or mobs that you must defeat, or as puzzles/obstacles that you must overcome
>instead of getting loot, you steal software that you can install on your rig to gain new abilities
>you can also steal money from corporate bank accounts and use it to buy new hardware for your rig, which might manifest as improved movement speed or attack damage when you’re netrunning
Anyway, there’s my million dollar idea. I’ve kept it in my head for years but I’ve finally accepted that I’m too dumb to be a game dev, so maybe someone else will make it.
>>528920037you're better off joining their discord if you want to follow it. Personally i think the character control swapping and addition of grappling are great changes, and the ambitious scale of the project is admirable, but I'm waiting for it to bake a bit more.
>>528929040the thing I'm most interested in about it is all the de-bloating unironically. cutting stupid pointless shit like hummingbirds and a billion varieties of clothing and the dumb graded steel stuff is enough to make me interested in it alone. all the mechanical changes sound good to me too particularly reworking armor and removing the bullshit attacks from enemies that arbitrarily have a billion armor penetration.
I just installed it to test and used debug to get all the crafting recipes, and I noticed that a lot of the armors were cleaned up so they don't conflict for no reason e.g. removing hip and shoulder coverage from certain chest pieces so you can actually use them in a practical armor setup. another good change.
the graded steel thing is such a perfect example of the cancer in dda, pisses me off to no end. It's been in the game forever now and there's been like 5 updates trying to switch fully over to the graded steels and it STILL isn't fully complete. For extra irony the way they implemented steel variety isn't even """"""realistic""""" either.
>>528930707does TLG have pockets?
why not just BN? is TLG just BN with pockets
>>528931404not really, I just tried both after deciding I'm done with dda. BN seems like it's derived from a much older version of cataclysm. TLG is basically like modern dda except with a fuckton of the cancerous bullshit removed or reworked, and has some of its own unique additions on top of that.
Anybody ever play Uplink or Hacker Evolution? They are sort of rogue adjacent..
>>528930707>the graded steel thing is such a perfect example of the cancer in dda, pisses me off to no end. >>528930707>the thing I'm most interested in about it is all the de-bloating unironically. My holy grail for cataclysm de-bloating would be to completely gut and rework how mutations and martial arts work. the autistic screeching would be biblical so it will never happen but still. imo the animal based 'trees' for mutations are clumsy as fuck and make the entire mutation mechanic play like shit. there's way too many trees with too few interesting mutations to go between them, unfortunately it stinks like yet another gameplay element that is included because it's a barely disguised form of the developers fetishes. So many of them are so ruinously debilitating that there is no reason to ever use them unless you happen to love jerking off to the idea of becoming a fucking frog or whatever.
similar thing for martial arts, if there is a single person out there that can explain exactly how each martial art works and where they are best used I would be shocked, it's such a tangled rat's nest of a mess. they should gut the entire thing and instead make it so you learn techniques from books or whatever, and increasing melee/unarmed levels unlock more technique slots. so like a martial arts manual teaches you grab break or disarm or sweep attack and at level 5 melee you have 3 technique slots to plug them into.
What's the actual reason that Kevin guy just removes everyone's content? Is it just so his git hub looks like it has activity so he gets hired for a job?
>>528934769they did introduce steel types but also did it extremely stupidly. Instead of using IRL classes of steel like carbon steel, alloy steel and tool steel they instead use mild, 'medium' whatever that means, 'high' an even stupider one, 'hardened' and 'tempered'. aka they got one of their clowns to skim the wiki page for heat treating and implemented a sprawling cancerous system of different steel grades that they still have not fully implemented in game yet years later.
For example there are a ton of repair recipes that still require the generic old chunks of steel, but the only way to get generic chunks of steel is to find random old objects that they haven't updated the deconstruct recipes on to use the new graded steels.
even worse is that the whole system serves 0 gameplay purpose. It's so trivially easy to leapfrog all of the lesser grades of steel that there is zero reason to ever make anything except tempered or maybe hardened if you really really don't want to grind fabrication skill. So all you get out of the whole mess is 5x the recipes for everything to bloat the crafting menu even more than it already was.
>>528935442holy shit it's almost like cataclysm is designed to fail
they're so good at failing at everything they do
>>528934839It's his little kingdom and he rules as he pleases
in CDDA Zombies that shoot projectiles have perfect aim even if you are in a roof or crouching feels completely unrealistic.
>>528935739They even took it a step further at some point recently. They implemented faults for melee weapons like how faulty engines work, so you need specific tools and materials to mend them. and it confusingly works in parallel to the old health bar durability that everything else uses, when the weapon takes durability damage it gains a fault, and you can repair a weapon's durability with a welder or whatever but the fault will persist which all nerf damage.
But it gets even worse than that, because for bladed weapons they implemented faults of 'crack' and 'broken blade' which are impossible to repair. In other words, when your fancy tempered steel sword that takes over an in game day to craft inevitably takes durability damage, there is a pretty high chance that it will randomly be irreparably broken forcing you to make a new one.
>>528937559funnily enough this is another thing that TLG addressed.
They will never add enough content to justify putting a new version on steam so they can make money.
>>528937559DDAcult thinks aimbot exists IRL so dodge and terrain has no impact on any sufficiently fast projectiles whatsoever.

its architecture is relatively well thought-out, you'll find more complex codebases in much simpler games

>>528977891depends on how attractive you are

>>528983376I don’t know what they’ve changed since that update, but it was a roguelike for most of its life, so most of the design is still probably around that.
>>528934769>did they introduce mild and other types of steel? That they did.
>with them breaking correctly depending on how you attack with it?No, the fault system is still pure bullshit.
The best example is that if you take an AR15 lower receiver (picrelated) and bash zeds with it to train rifle CQB, it will develop various jams like doublefeeds and stovepipes despite not having any ammo, mag, barrel or chamber. Too bad you can't generate casings/ammo out of thin air with this bug.
>>528935442Those are real steel grades though. Mild steel, medium carbon steel and high carbon steel. I think they went with those casual designations because using SAE grades would have been too specific and autistic.
The shit you describe is pointless. 90% of the generic steel recipes couldn't be used with tool steel.
>even worse is that the whole system serves 0 gameplay purpose. It's so trivially easy to leapfrog all of the lesser grades of steel that there is zero reasonThat's not true though, right now the major gameplay impact is that maintaining various vehicle components takes different grades of steel.
So you have to have working knowledge of where to source them. (In DDA world rules--the core design goals of "verisimilitude" and "problems should have realistic solutions" fail hard here)
In hindsight I gotta say that splitting AR15 pattern rifles into lowers and uppers was a fucking retarded idea.
It's a neat idea on paper but in practice it's done from a retarded burger-legalese standpoint. The cataclysm doesn't care if the lower receiver is the legally registered firearm, it's not a gun. It's not anything but a weird piece of metal.
is Project Zomboid catching up to CDDA with all its mods? I saw Youtube of servers simulating actual cities with merchants industry and stuff.
>>528984952Nah, they're still very different games.
Zomboid is a classic zombie apocalypse in rural 90s setting. A realtime multiplayer ARPG with handcrafted map.
Meanwhile Cataclysm is a futuristic interdimensional scifimagic "all the apocalypses at once" setting. A procgenned roguelike.
Feature-wise I've cata is way behind in the whole long-term post-apoc survival sim thing.
There's no erosion/nature growth system like in Zomboid.
Even multiple years into the cataclysm, newly generated maps still spawn fresh food that should have gone off ages ago. Some perishables stay good forever. You can dump food into basecamp storage where it is abstracted into not much more than a single calorie value and is magically accessible through any of your camps.
Newly generated maps also now have those panicking human NPCs, as if the apocalypse happened just minutes ago. CDDA is getting worse.
But Zomboid will never have 90% of Cataclyms's features, given its setting.
No CBMs, no mutations, no laser guns and other scifi devices, no mi-gos, no tears in reality spewing nether monsters, no triffids, no fungaloids, no zombie evolution/variety, no sprawling scifi labs twisted by dimensional fatigue, no aircraft carriers telestormed into a lake, and so on.
Modders can add a thing or two but the focus is always going to be different.
>>528987453>I've cata isi've found cata is*
>>528984562>Those are real steel grades though. Mild steel, medium carbon steel and high carbon steelIt's a dumb way to use steel grades. The significance of carbon content in steel is simply how hard it can he heat treated, higher carbon = higher hardness potential. This is a pretty stupid way to have your graded steel system in a video game work because it's simultaneously hyper specific enough to distinguish between various carbon contents of steel and not specific enough that it misses entire broad classes of steel like alloy steel and stainless which are extremely common grades.
And the inclusion of "hardened" and "tempered" grades show they really have no clue. Any kind of steel that is heat treated is going to be both hardened and tempered. You can't leave a heat treated part in the dead hard as quenched state for any application because it would break instantly, tempering isn't some mystical practice it's literally standard and necessary for any kind of heat treatment.
>>528984562>>528991351And fyi
>90% of the generic steel recipes couldn't be used with tool steel. This is also exactly true of high carbon steel except even worse. High carbon steel is nigh impossible to weld just like cast iron and is literally not used almost ever in the modern day except for what, making fancy kitchen knives and hand files? Even hand files are made by case hardening in many cases.
And also is the point not that you SHOULDN'T be able to make every recipe with every kind of steel? I'm pretty sure if you are autisitcally gonna simulate different steel grades the literal point should be that you can't make everything out of any steel.
Sure you can't make a vehicle frame out of tool steel, but you sure as hell could make your fancy katana out of it and would even be thematically appropriate for making a super high end weapon since tool steel is so high performance and so difficult to find laying around in large quantities in the apocalypse.
It's very, very apparent that the steel grade system was made by someone that has ZERO personal experience with metalworking and their idea of "realism" came from reading a wikipedia article one time, just like every other "realism" mechanic.
>>528991464>It's very, very apparent that the steel grade system was made by someone that has ZERO personal experience with metalworkingWait, are you trying to tell me that autistic basement dwelling faggots who develop videogames DO NOT work for 5 years in the bao gang steel mill before implementing crafting systems in their roguelikes? Next you're going to tell me that developers don't do 20 years in the military with at least 2 combat deployments before they start to ponder what stats the guns should have in their game. Scandalous.
>>528992386It's called staying in your lane, if you are gonna ruin your game by adding an absurdly annoying and autistic material grading feature that makes your crafting system even more of a nightmare in the name of realism you should at least make sure there is a fucking point to doing it and ideally also serve the gameplay.

>>529007162>>529009526I still have never seen ocean in game speaking of this. I think I started 3 different runs with the specific goal of reaching the ocean and never managed it because I got bored of driving east forever or died before getting there.

The guy who made the fork was The Darkling Wolf, who used to post in rlg
Kevin really just picked the fork from him, condemned thedarklingwolf into damnation memoriae (he is only known if you go as far as 12 years ago in the revisions for the roguebasin article) as I did here
basically what he did was raise some money for a fork someone else already did the code for and he thought "we'll give this coer like 15 K $ and he'll fix everything"
that was 12+ years ago

so far, I'm getting good mileage out of my bow and keeping enemies away from me with utility spells. I want to get oil-puddle and firestarter spell, not because it's optimal but because I remember it being fun (until you accidentally light yourself on fire)
>>529033701Neat, haven't played this before

Got an unlucky powerup, having to decide between stealth and magic. I probably shouldn't ever skip magic, because I get 5 extra mana per powerup, which compounds in a game where you can rest only once per floor.
I read the OP but I'm going to ask anyway.

Do you enjoy playing games with the manual/wiki/source code always open in the background? Are you trying to surpass CDDA in tedium?
Alright
After actually reading some more of the spells, I've come up with a game-winning build for rift wizard 2. All I need is a lot of SP, and hopefully some luck with items... Then I shall crush my previous high score of level 20.
I also realized I should be rerolling every level if I don't see an item I want, especially early on when it's smooth sailing.
>>529060863What’s the build plan?
>>529061820Well mainly I realized that pyrostatic curse has an upgrade to lower fire resist by -50, so I'm going to try my fire build again. Before I was doing
>fireball>immolate with dragonsoul upgrade to get fire drakes constantly>eye of flame with immolate upgrade >flame gate with eye upgrade so they all cast immolate basically, thus even more dragonsoul triggersbut the more I play the less I like drakes(bastards keep friendly firing me) so I may do something similar, except instead of dragonsoul I take a different immolate upgrade
If I get some of those trinkets that summon fire spirits again I'll lean into minions more with boiling blood and pyrophilia
Pyrophilia synergizes well with hemocorruption too, works great when my screen is full of fire spirits that all keep healing.
any good roguelikes on sale rn? hows tangledeep? rift wizard, shiren the wanderer? path of achra

And for games that play a lot like traditional roguelikes but let you save there’s:
Conquest of Elysium 5
Lost Flame
Doors of Trithius
Stoneshard
>>529063391I'll give that a look, thanks. Definitely want to do a more dragon-centric build at some point. There's just so many spells/upgrades that I'm only reading a few per run instead of sitting down and poring over everything.
>>529063214I didn't really enjoy tangledeep from what little I played of it, can't recall why. Rift wizard and path of achra are similar in that they're focused on builds and getting upgrades/items with each cleared level. Achra is really really easy the first few cycles and basically gets harder with each NG+ which I'm not a huge fan of. I prefer rift wizard 2 over achra so far.
For Shiren I'd recommend emulating them before buying any shoddy remakes. If you like the mystery dungeon formula they're great, personally recommend the 2nd game on the N64 which has an english fan translation.
Also Jupiter Hell is on sale if you're interested in DoomRL without the Doom.
>>529064148>mystery dungeon formulawhat is that? ive actually never heard of it until i saw the game mentioned in one of these threads
>>529064921no idea, but given someone called Quasimorph, an extraction game, a mystery dungeon, I assume that mystery dungeon just means extraction game
>>529064921Basically its own genre. Square rooms connected with halls, stairs go down. You level up and carry items, there's a story, also there's no permadeath so it's not 100% a roguelike, but it is simultaneous turn based. The pokemon mystery dungeon games and shiren the wanderer are popular examples, just look at gameplay from either of them and you know how the other plays.

Well, I reached Mordred. I was whooping his ass too and most levels before this because of this crazy pyrostatic curse feedback loop. Right as I got him down to no reincarnations left he teleported within a few tiles of me so I thought:
>hm, he can do a lot of damage, I'll use a golden stopwatch to be safe
then he killed me
that's the second time I've died the turn after using what seems like the rarest "I win" item in the game. Kind of a bummer desu. I might've won if I just attacked instead and killed him since I had quick cast on my fire spells anyway.
Straight from max health too, so my health potions were worthless.
Notes to self, focus on getting over 200 max hp next run, or get some kind of spell that provides SH.
>>529072731>Is there any type that doesn't use all 4 flags? Also just out of curiosity, is "consumable" a type in itself? Or would it be a flag of some supertype?some items don't use flags at all, correct
an item is defined by its type (if there is no type the item isn't present in the array)
this type is then used in several functions that return the: item name, item visuals (foreground, background, symbol), item description (static string, though I want to display item stats so I'll sprintf the item description into a buffer along with item damage (another function) and output that instead)

>>529138016check the mass shooter demographic and ask yourself if they are good at basketball
Roguelikes have to be tile based and turn based
If not, then Super Hexagon is a roguelike
If not turn based, then DF fortress mode with 1 dwarf and no migrants is a roguelike, or CDDA with that old real time mod
I think tile based is the #1 thing that separated roguelikes from roguelites and is more important than any other qualifier, more than procedural generation or permadeath. Second most important is tile based.

idk it's a game after all? melee damage is influenced by strength, bow damage is influenced by strength AND intelligence and gun damage is influenced is influenced by intelligence
it just makes the stat useful, does it not?
and it's not like its +100% maybe if the average damage for a gun is 20 and you apply your stat to that it's like 20+5..
Also I completely reject the idea that a win or end condition is required for the definition of roguelike. Calling unreal world or cdda or adventure mode not a roguelike just because there isn't a single line of code setting an arbitrary limit that you can often ignore with an "endless mode" has nothing to do with game mechanics
>>529138783You don't need to have an intelligence stat in your game just for the sake of it, anon. If it's not doing anything then you can take it out.
Melee and bow damage being affected by strength makes sense
Guns being impacted by intelligence does not. You can affect damage PER SECOND with a perception stat that affects accuracy though, but there's no reason a guns bullets have more stopping power because your character reads Plato
>>529138943>Guns being impacted by intelligence does not. does it make more sense if it's called that way?
it's not about reading plato, it's about having the brain to aim for the head (for example)
>>529138462The first tactical RPGs were just some games that copied Rogue but gave you control over multiple characters and made exploration modal.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sISTQELZw2Y
Hence, roguelikes are just a subgenre of tactical RPGs, or vice/versa.
>>529139532>roguelikes are just a subgenre of tactical RPGsis Super Hexagon a tactical RPG?
>>529139102Ok having the willpower to aim for the head is Critical Hit chance. Again, this is related to hit chance or damage per second, not actually gun damage
>>529140156Obviously not, it's not even turn-based.
>>529138462DF fortress mode uses timed turns, not real time, so a solo run in it would be a timed roguelike just like crypt of the necrodancer.
>>529141454>>529141094Super hexagon uses turns too, a turn is just 1/60th of a second or colloquially, a "frame"
>>529142736You don't know what a turn is.
>>529109146>>529117010Mordred gets temporary immunity after each stun the same way you do, so teleporter is the better endgame panic button item. Especially if you're spamming word of chaos.
>>529109146Also dark resist is another way to tank it.
>>528440430 (OP)I'll tell you what bugs me about cdda.
Its the finickey way you are forced to craft things.
Say i want a spear.
I can't just affix two sticks together to get a long stick, i have to disassemble a coat rack, which for some reason requires a screwdriver.
I can put two pipes together with a pipe fitting, but I have to saw the end off and can't attach a spike.
I can make a certain kind of spear, but it can only use steak knives and not a spike, a spike is a different kind of spear.
Its like there are a million ways to do things, but they are all ass backwards, like why would you do it that way? You have to do things in this very specific, very autistic, sort of way, and you can't just do what a normal person would do and use common sense, you have to have the exact right materials and skills and all sorts of other finickey nonsense.
Why can't I just do things like a normal person?
>>529124403This kind of thing is a symptom of having too little resource attrition. DoomRL/Jupiter Hell for example has lots of weak enemies but you're still paying attention when killing them because even trivial hits will waste hard-to-replenish armor durability, plus there's the issue of ammo conservation and non-regenerating HP. Quasimorph both has equipment attrition and one turn kills around every corner so you always need to be alert and die the moment you aren't. Rift wizard doesn't have this problem because the start of each floor is usually the most challenging and no fog of war means you can always know what you're in for.
>>529145349Yeah I realized that this morning after I slept on it. Could've easily just teleported out of his range. Is temp stun immunity just 1 turn? Also wonder if you can freeze them during that immunity...
>>529145798Good call, something to look out for. Mordred will feel my wrath today. Probably. Don't feel like doing the same exact build as yesterday so I'll mess around with other stuff.
>>529148210Yeah, any game that lets you rest to fully recover everything has this problem, even my favorite roguelike, ToME, 90% of the time you are not in danger, its just that the game is so long that you’ll eventually lapse and take a stupid risk like doing sealed rooms (honestly every single one of my tome deaths but 1 was from a sealed room or a chest rare, just don’t do them lol)
>>529159119But think of the loot!
Though at some point opening those things that you know could kill you becomes the exciting break from the monotony of clearing the game
On my first insane win I was so confident I opened the big dragon room of death
>>529155120I don't remember the exact duration, but mordred will have a "clarity" buff listed on her statsheet when it's in effect.
>>529159119You can usually come back to them when you're overleveled for the area.
>>529086787Most fun imo is battlemage with most staves actually
>>528521656I'm still here every week but not miss her anymore
>>529086787I like the class that go fast
rogue upgrade I think?
How's hades 2? Does it have enough content in early access?
>>529175505hades 2 isn’t a roguelike, its got veryical metaprogression, its one of those retarded gsmes with an inverted difficulty curve that simultaneously gets easier as you get better at it because people who make that kind of game are trend chasers and have zero game design chops.
>>528440430 (OP)If you start at the refugee center in cdda, do they refridgerators there work? is there a way to check?
>>529179674Open it and check if the light is on
>48 damage to self
Turns out I can hit myself with doom storm. And I'm poisoned.
>>529197725ripperoni, only way to come back from lethal poison is by picking up a ruby heart
>>529198663I had 3 SP to spare fortunately, so, ta-dah
slime form
I like that you get to keep the hat.
>>529199179he is cute like that
>>529197725Storms are some of the deadliest spells in the game, both to the enemy and to yourself.
>>529064921I define it as the extraction game before they were a thing. It has a different design philosophy to roguelikes where you're playing chicken for resources. Bail out at the right time and you'll be able to go further in the next run, die and lose all your loot.

bros I'm scared am I gonna die
>>529210438the only thing anyone needs to know about portal storms is that every good branch disabled them
>>529210438congrats you won the game
YEAAAAAH BABY
Chaos build ftw, fuck you mordred.
Used literally every single consumable I had on 20 to clear a trillion bone shamblers. Never thought I'd have so much trouble with number of enemies with this build. Bought Choir of Angels as a hail mary despite not thinking it'd be enough but those beautiful bastards healed me to full and melted the shamblers.
Also rainstorm + water elementals are surprisingly cost efficient for 4 SP, they carried me through the early-mid game easily by themselves, and they work well with blood boil.
Think this was day 3 of playing, fun game.
New kino dropped

should I buy Rogue Fable 3? It's 70% off. Has anyone played it
>>529221462Oh they're pushing it.
Let's hope it drains every worthwhile contributor from DDA and becomes the main cataclysm fork.
>>529221462>worm girldidn't know TLG was trans-coded
>>529222098At some point you have to confront the fact that you are hallucinating trannies everywhere
>>529221440eyyyy congrats! you’re now way better at rift wizard than me despite my hours in both games. Now try one of the archmage trials >:)
>>529221807the sequel is out already, rogue fable 4, and that’s where all the active development is occurring
>>529222098>>529222304worm girl is a cata youtuber, I have no idea if troon or not, given playing autismo roguelike I’d say likely
Could never really "get into" cata, personally. The last time I tried I remember reading through some whacky martial arts choices which kind of put me off, didn't seem particularly fitting.
>>528734296good old Fulsome Distillation and Evaporate, man old transmuter was fun as fuck
excuse me, I lied, that was Stalker not transmuter

>>529221462>putting free open source games on steamthat's a kekaroo for me
is BN in there too
>>529229215well why not, steam has a lot of great features like cloud saves, achievements, and easy modding, its the reason I don’t usually pirate videogames and I pirate pretty much everything else.
>>529222949Thanks brother. The archmage trials do look fun, the ones that limit your spell selection randomly in particular. Could probably do the pyromancy one easily enough.
>>529229779>roguelikes>steam has a lot of great features like cloud saves, achievements, and easy moddinghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuDqNLgVHv8
>>529229937tome has unlocks so cloud saves are useful
tome has some of the most achievements out of any game on steam
I dont think you’d argue that tome isn’t a roguelike…
Haven't played roguelikes in like a year and change; any big releases or updates?
>>529231647Rift Wizard 2, Rogue Fable 4, and Shadowed: the Demon Castle of Ooe came out
Cogmind gets a ton of updates like usual

Give me some protips for Rift Wizards 2
>>529222304To be honest an autistic coder working on an obscure roguelike and having "girl" in their handle is like 99,8% chance of being a tranny. The ratio of actual women vs. trannies who'd pick up stuff like this isn't exactly on the side of them being a woman.
>>529223251>>529249608>given playing autismo roguelike I’d say likelyI would agree, (s)he posted an IRL youtube vid of eating an MRE where you could see his/her body from the neck down, and it did look female enough to potentially be a real woman however.
the worm refers to the penis, what is there to debate
>>529222013I have been playing it and it's definitely better than dda.
the only complaint I have is that I guess the version it was forked from was when they still had that annoying ass thing where you can't move on vehicle tiles if they have a certain amount of cargo in them.
it runs unbelievably faster too.
>>529221440Nice work anon
>>529248534If you're clearing a level easily enough you could save your points for something that might save you rather than immediately spending it on something you had in mind
that "oh I could really use this right now" spell could save you rather than another synergistic spell
Carrying over SP and then spawning right on top of another SP orb is how I buy a lot of my spells

Today I'm playing roguelikes or my pc will heat too much and cook me to death
Also URR is still being developed, wew
