"Winter has come" Edition, and so have I.
>What the heck is this/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as Age of Decadence, A Hat in Time, Axiom Verge, Baba Is You, Battle Brothers, Card City Nights 2, Cave Story, Civilization, CrossCode, Cultist Simulator, Darkest Dungeon, Darkwood, DashBored, Dead Cells, The Desolate Hope, Disco Elysium, Environmental Station Alpha, FTL, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Knytt, LISA, Lobotomy Corp, Loop Hero, Machinarium, Middens, Monolith, Monster Train, Noita, OFF, OneShot, Rimworld, Rain World, Slay the Spire, Starsector, Subnautica, Sunless Skies, Underrail, VA-11 HALL-A, Yume Nikki, etc., as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Pillars of Eternity, Rayman, and Valkyria Chronicles. /jrpg/ is welcome. Idle, roguelite, shmup, 4x / RTS / city-builders, and RPGMaker games are cool too.
Mobile or consoles, Flash or Unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.
>Can I talk about games that already have a general? We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads, however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

at least I have brutal doom
>>528741974Brutal Doom is garbage
Currently playing starsector but I have some problems with it mostly regarding pirates and hostile engagements.
1. You should have the option to surrender to hostile fleets, especially pirates, by giving them resources or following some kind of demands they have. You know since that's how real pirates operate, right now they are basically just mass murderers.
2. Pirates attacking your colonies even if you are friendly with them is also stupid but IMO "Pirates" as a whole shouldn't even have a single reputation since they aren't supposed to be a real faction but a loosely associated group of people right? Then there should be a bunch of independent pirate groups with their own reputations and pirates should just be a label for anyone not part of the major factions.
Perhaps some actions can affect your reputation with all the pirate groups and some only with a specific one for example.
I feel like the game right now is difficult to play without save-scumming and I have no idea how anyone does it. You can literally just be traveling around hyperspace and some pirate fleet who's way too fast decides to massacre you for no reason and if you have no story points to escape then you just gotta start over, which I assume no one ever does.
The game is good but I feel like 90% of the fun is the combat and reffing your ships. A lot of things outside of that feels like they are not well though out.

>>528742425Bro, those flying scrapyards are basically free supply deliveries.
Your fleet is abject garbage if it can't handle pirates.
You also won't even be seeing large fleets like pirate armadas before you should have the means to deal with them. Whether through combat or outmaneuvering them. Basically, git gud scrub.
>>528740835 (OP)>"Winter has come" EditionExpanded to the iron ore so I can get an industrial sector going to import some food.
Can't sustain my economy on charcoal alone and currently that's my only export.
>>528747989Me being a shitter aside I still think their behavior should be changed to make the game more immersive and reflect how real world pirates act, like how they have so much money if all they do is destroy and loot scraps from destroyed fleets?
Considering pirates are way more ubiquitous than any other faction in the game how can they fund their activities to such an extent if they never do any real pirating and make enemies of everyone by committing random acts of mass murder?
>>528741974>can't run beyond citadel because it's optimized like shitReally? Are you playing games on a toaster?

Pretty much something your throw up in the background while listening to a podcast or sitting in a voice chan with your friends

From memory the beginning is super punishing, especially if you don't know what you're doing as a new player and then it can get super easy at parts when you have some strong builds
>>528770848I assume that you can do that in Medieval Dynasty too? The title of the game literally says it.
>>528771087I don't know! Again, I never played Medieval Dynasty.
>>528770618Now that you say it, it's kinda interesting to explore my own views on this.
I'm sometimes fine with playing a game while also consuming some other medium or talking to people, but usually if it's some grindy/monotonous game.
Sometimes I'm also fine with playing a game while listening to a podcast. But I know it's a bad habit. In essence it's not too different from going on a walk while listening to something, except it's less healthy.
Meanwhile I'm absolutely baffled by people who have movies on "in the background" while doing something else. Especially if it's a movie they've never seen before.
I'm okay with people who listen to music while focusing on something else, but I'm also a huge advocate for listening to music consciously" and if possible in albums rather than playlists.
There's a remaster coming. Are we going to replay FFT for a 3rd time? Are there indie Tactics games that come close to FFT? The many I've played are either very underwhelming or lacking in depth.

>>528855345How should I know? Probably some pointless drama with the devs being retarded as usual. Happens every now and then.
In any case, it's peak eurojank and the best game out there for galactic scale exploration from on-foot FPS gameplay to massive capital vs capital ship space combat. Tons of unique planetary POIs to explore, plus loads of ships and a bunch of space stations. All vessels are built from lego blocks, but it's not autistic physics sim like Spengies.
The core gameplay loop is entertaining, but the game is hard carried by huge content overhaul mods like Project Eden and Reforged Galaxy.
Explore a galaxy with stuff worth exploring (not like NMS with the same handful of static POIs on literally every planet) on a mothership *you* built and designed, launching smaller vessels off it. Or just use stock/workshop ships if you don't care about lego building. It's a great game.
>>528855345NTA but it's very, VERY jank. It's cobbled together by devs that were way in over their head and had no clue what they were doing, and it shows with lots of questionable design decisions, glacial update pace, a plethora of free Unity assets, and overall bugginess. On-foot combat in particular is dreadful and borderline nonfunctional.
But, it's the only Space Engineers-like that's an actual game instead of an aimless lego set, with planets to explore and POIs to raid that actually gives meaning to the shit you build, and there is a pretty good amount of stuff to look at and steal. And the existence of energy shields means your ship isn't instantly destroyed by a single missile and one small scuffle won't set you back 30 hours of grinding. Also has better and more expansive mods.
>>528856450Should I play Vanilla first or with Project Eden/Reforged Galaxy from the start?
>>528856619Up to you, might be a good idea to familiarize yourself with the simpler vanilla content first and get a taste for the core gameplay and drop it if it's not your thing. Also seeing the vanilla compaign will make you appreciate mods even more.
Then start a long-term game with latest Reforged Eden.
>>528856543>On-foot combat>borderline nonfunctionalThat's a bit much innit?
It's just got animation jank. People play boomer shooters with literal sprites for animation.
>>528857959It didn't even have damage feedback until last year. The only way you knew you were getting shot was your health dropping, even Doom had the screen flash. And the AI is still fully capable of shooting through walls, they just don't because they can't target you, so if they bug out and lock onto you, or spawn inside a wall, the hitscanners will gun you down from 3 floors below you.
>>528859274>hitscanners will gun you down from 3 floors belowFunny how I don't remember that ever happening.
Sorry, but I know you're just trying to enforce your point by lying. That's not how collision works.
Have you really never noclipped around in creative/godmode?
Projectiles and hitscans alike can't hit anything if there's any visible block face between them and their target.
If you clip inside a wall, you can see/shoot what's on the other side. It's just a consequence of basic optimization--don't draw or collide with invisible polygon faces. But you can't see or hit what's 3 walls away, because there would still be 2 visible, colliding surfaces between you and the target.
By the way, countless 3D games including AAA games over the years have had the same bug. Clipping your camera inside a wall, for example with modded FOV or other camera adjustments, allows you to see or shoot through it into adjacent rooms, unless occlusion culling is smart enough not to draw them.

It's a slice of life type RPG that not everyone is going to like but I wish there'd be more of. You're literally just some dude. The only reason you're even a game protagonist is because you are in the right place at the right time. You don't know how to fight and it could be hours of gameplay until you kill your first enemy.
Also don't get frustrated if the combat is janky and unintuitive, especially in the beginning when your skills a low. I personally really love the harmony between Henry being bad at fighting and the player not being good at the combat system yet. It isn't the type of game where you can mow down hordes of enemies and sometimes (often) avoiding a fight might be your best call (As it would be irl)
Also unfortunately some of the RPG parts are jank. There were quite a few times where I wish the story would have been paced differently or you had a couple more choice how to approach an objective.

In much the same way the story of a lot of Independent polities boils down to "no one can invade them because no one would tolerate the balance of power shifting that way", I've always thought of pirates as filling the niche of plausible deniability and wetwork for the major factions. Want to damage your opponent's economy? Incentivize pirates to run drugs to them. Pay them to harass their trade fleets. They'll do things to people that would get you condemned if you did it yourself. I reckon that's why high-profile leaders like Kanta are allowed to exist; the major factions -want- to have one charismatic warlord to deal with on these matters, instead of like ten petty warlords that shift daily.
That said, use tugs and augmented drive field mods to keep your fleet speed high and remember to right click to view further ahead of your fleet in motion to avoid incoming stuff. Remember you can pause, and remember that emergency burn lets you turn on a dime.
>>528888995It's good? I thought it was just one of those Souls-like + linear hack and slash games.
>>528889353Only a handful, though unfortunately it's not always clear which ones those are. For instance very early on there is a mission that starts by a member of the nobility to meet them first thing tomorrow morning. I always complied, because otherwise it would break my immersion, but as far as I know you can let him wait for literal weeks and it's fine.
This is my pet peeve with this (and so many other RPGs) that the pacing of the story rarely accounts for sidequests and if you try to immerse yourself into your character and do missions according to their urgency, there's barely any downtime to go explore or do side content.
I mostly meant taking it slow in terms of mindset, if that makes sense. Accepting that you won't be some cool local hero knight for a long time. And at least to me that made the progression very satisfying when you finally did afford that high level armor and sword

Also Tarkov to a lesser extend. I've since found out that actually has a good singleplayer mod, but by then kind of lost interest in the game.
The game I was referring to is called Sand https://store.steampowered.com/app/1431300/Sand/ Looks a bit barebones because Early Access and not even out yet, but it looks like it would be so down my lane if it was Singleplayer/Coop

And yeah, I get you. I tried Hunt Showndown because friend was a fan of it, but he stopped playing when I started, and since I'm very, very nervous, I play alone to not be a dead weight, and... well, it's a horrible game solo.
>>528898315This is me with rougelikes/lites and boomer shooters, so many of them it's gotten old
Though extraction shooters are mid too, they go out of their way to make single player on them trash
>>528899346>Extraction shooter Ew
>>528899346If you liked the setting, can I recommend you Blood West? I never played the hunt so I couldnt say if the gameplay is similar or comparable, but I liked the aspect of how you're just a mostly normal dude (technically you're immortal in lore since you can respawn, but its very easy to get your shit kicked in), enemy visual design is top notch imo, gunplay is nice and guns feel strong and worth the use even with the consequence in mind (reloading is slow because of 18th century weaponry) and I liked the level design.
>>528905210Blood West can be brutal, losing streaks can brick your save.
>>528905326The trick is just not to care about the debuffs from death until you get one that is so delibitating it make the game unfun, then you pop one of those purple potion which are suprisingly plentiful if you check every nook and cranny of cabins and the likes. Most of the debuffs are effectively inconsequential and can be safely ignored, and/or tolerated even when at full strenght. I recall how I had a whole stash of them in my chest and 1 on me at all time for when I died too often.
>>528889790It's great. Not a hack and slash, proper soulslike combat most reminiscent of Bloodborne but by no means a copy. It is 'linear' like Darksouls 3 where you are mostly going through a series of areas but each one is pretty large and loops back on itself a few times. The variety and complexity of enemies is far beyond what Fromsoft does, barely any reuse of enemy types between levels. Several cases of a unique non-boss enemy appearing just once to make a cool encounter. Same for weapon variety, each weapon has its own unique moveset, plus they are divided into blade & handle which can be mix-and-matched to combine the reach/weight of one weapon with the moveset of another. Defensive options are also more varied, you naturally end up dodging, blocking, and parrying (perfectly timed block) in equal measure.
Lies of P feels like the first time any developer (including Fromsoft) has held a magnifying glass to the genre and put deliberate thought into what works and what could be improved. In most cases (including Fromsoft) things are copied without any thought or changed just for the sake of being different. You can tell just from navigating the menus that the developers put thought into every little detail.
>>528910949Sounds like trash. Like Lord of the Fallen.
I tried it, it swore me off Souls like forever.
>>528911113Also tried LotF and am in agreement that it is trash. It's one of the games I had in mind when mentioning others which imitate without thought or make changes for no reason. The people who made that game never stopped to ask 'is this enjoyable. Code Vein is almost serviceable but has the same problem. Lies of P on the other hand is a genuine quality game. It can seriously be considered alongside the better Fromsoft games, in a similar vein to how Project Wingman is above all the Ace Combat imitators (and the worse entries in that franchise).

>>528760931>Can I get some recommendations for good games in this genre that aren't Vampire Survivors? If you want a low investment recommendations play holocure. It's the same concept (+ some extra features) and it's free. If you fully hate how it plays, then you'll see it there.
As for people hating the genre, calling it shit and "survivorslop": I mean, yeah. These games aren't made to be the Disco Elysium, Bioshock or Baldurs Gate. These games are made to be "have something that's kinda entertaining for usually under 5 bucks". To use an overused food analogy: It's the fast food burger of video games. Is it the most nourishing game you can get? No, but it'll keep your attention for a few hours, few more hours if you're a completionist kinda guy.
Personally? Yeah, I feel like the runs get boring after a while. But also by that time I got my entertainments worth.
I compare it to doing shit like buying Watch Dogs 2 on sale. Is watchdogs 2 an amazing game? No, it's an okay game, not horrible but also on no ones "must play" list. But is it worth 10 bucks? Fuck yeah. Okayish GTA clone with hacking for a tenner? That's great value!
Any non-mmo non diablo style ARPG games that let you have a pet or summon class/build? I'm a sucker for swarming my enemies with minions but it seems like outside of the afforementioned genres it's fucking illegal. I know Darktide recently added a DLC class with a pet and it's one of the few recent examples I can think of.
>>528971750Since you mentioned it, Darktides pet class is surprisingly good. But if you like to micro your pets you might be disappointed as the only micro is pinging enemies for it to attack, otherwise it's immortal and attacks enemies near you, saved me from CC before. not OP but far from useless

any comfy indie games like hotel dusk? adventure games basically? or unique experiences like rain world?
>>528972740Yeah, I heard the Darktide class is really good, but I'm just not wanting to spend any more money on that game. I'm still kinda salty on how shit it was on release, even if it's a lot better now. And for the record: I don't care much if there's not much pet controll if the AI is not mega stupid.
>palworldyeah I guess all the Pokemon games and their copy cats would count, but not exactly what I'm looking for. Same like, FFX Yuna sommons. That's just you playing a different character, ya know?
I kinda like Guild Wars 1's system of letting you "pet-ify" team members so you can play a dead game without needing to find a 8 man team. It also has a killer pet class in the necromancer summoning dozens of minions. But the game is old as fuck now. So it seems like games with pet / minion classes are pretty fucking rare.

>>528932956>>528987868I'll never stop being a bit of an elitist about slow burn games. Some of my favorite games have a very slow start. Seeing the world in the calm before the storm for a while (as an example) just makes the chaos of a game's climax hit so much harder.

>Froever Skiesfairly recently survivalcraft shit. Wishlisted it while it was still Early Access when I was trying to fill a subnautica shaped hole in my heart. It looked decent enough, but you never know with these kinds of games, definetely will need to watch some reviews.
The premise as far as I know is that your "base" is a mobile airship that you build and the ground is covered in toxic gas so you have limited time to explore before having to return back to your ship
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1641960/Forever_Skies/
One thing I am super skeptical about (before even getting into gameplay) is how shitty the ships look in the screenshots. I get that it has to be modular if the player is supposed to build their own, but it looks a little too "blocky" to me.
I think Subnautica did a great job with ow its bases looked, though of course the setting lends itself well to that.
>>529010134Oh, I remember now, it's this one : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyYit3AkDBM. Apparently not too bad, but sicknesses don't go away when you die, and building IS blocky, but placing furniture seem to be a lot more freeform.

>>529021461>Stalker 2Really wanna give that a shot and try some of the freeplay mods for the original games too, but I'm getting filtered by Clear Sky and I really want to play the OG games, especially after loving SoC so much
>>529014642>is it really still popular? The modding aspect does surprise me as well. The truth is that in-game AI is actually quite primitive, and once you figure out how it works, it doesn't feel as unnerving ever again. And it's not like the developers don't know it, they purposefully ramped up the difficulty in the Choir Main Hall (the "final boss" section of the game) by adding tons of Brutes that you're expected to avoid using prior knowledge of their behavior. The Justine DLC makes things even more obvious by forcing you to be in very, VERY close proximity with the monsters, something the main game doesn't do. Now because of the main threat of the game being so easy to read, mod devs have to go through some extensive hoops to keep things entertaining, and as you would expect, they usually fail. While I've seen some clever ideas, in most cases it revolves around adding more cheap jumpscares or shifting focus to storybuilding, which wears out its welcome very quickly. And even clever ideas can always fall flat because of the mod developers' inexperience with the engine or its limitations, which is understandable because of Frictional's engine being in-house and not used by anyone else. So I really don't know how the TDD modding scene still exists and if it's still able to impress, you'd expect every trick in the book to be common knowledge at this point.
>the dev peaked with penumbra black plagueFrictional's other titles never interested me, can't say much.
>they milked the ip dry"Milked" is a harsh word, but it's true that Amnesia could've been handled better. With through-the-roof expectations after TDD, A Machine for Pigs ended up being too short to be called a full-fledged sequel (there wouldn't be anywhere near as much hate if it was a DLC), and Rebirth ended up being painfully mediocre. In my eyes, Rebirth is the only "bad" Amnesia game (without having played The Bunker), so it's more "not living up to expectations" than full-force, soulless milking.
>>529015708>a) the fact that it spawned a bunch of copycats that retroactively made it less uniqueI literally can't name a single Amnesia copycat. Indie horror in general got more popular around that time, yes, but Amnesia doesn't seem to be the inspiration behind them. Interactible inventory system? Barely exists in indie horror. Sanity mechanic? Barely exists in indie horror. Pre-20th century setting? Barely exists in indie horror. Physics-based puzzles? Barely exist in indie horror. I WISH Amnesia had more copycats, but it doesn't seem to be the case. Only thing that comes to mind is the homage to Kaernk in Spooky's House of Jumpscares, but it's just a lovely reference, nothing more than that. Unless I'm oblivious to something you know about, Amnesia had little to do with those cookie-cutter made-in-a-week horror games. Slender: The Eight Pages spawned those, pretty sure, and it came out two years after Amnesia.
>b) the fact that everyone and their mom milked it for getting fake scared on facecam contentMakes sense why one would avoid it, yeah.

I'm mainly put off by how it's just more of the second half of SoC (ie big fuckoff battles). My favorite parts of that game were the quiet and tense walks through the Zone, everything north of Army Warehouses felt like a drop in quality and the main reason it didn't bother me was probably because I was riding the high of the game so far and also because I really liked the ending.
>Personally, id say just enjoy anomaly stalker standalone mod on pc rather than get stalker 2Shame. I did give one of those modpacks a very quick try before deciding to play the OG games first. And I had a great time, but the disjointed level design kind of took away from it. Anyone got any experience with Supermarket together as a solo game? How does it hold up vs Supermarket Sim?
RAVENSBURG got an update that includes a new romance for the game's co-protagonist vampire girl. Honestly I'm kinda baffled the dev took so long and added romance to other less important girls first but better later than never.

I had to find an old installer, extract and convert the flv to find relive this one video, part of the Wulfram II installer, of the game's dev "Slurpy".
i think perfect parrying in Lies Of P gave me tendonitis
>>529073187Dafuq is that guy doing? What is in the jar?
>>529073281probably very clean distilled water in subfreezing temperatures
ice needs a starting point for crystallization
>>529073281"Hot ice, or sodium acetate, is made by dissolving baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in vinegar, then heating the solution to evaporate most of the water and create a supersaturated solution"
You probably won't find these anywhere else now: https://files.catbox.moe/7r86i2.zip Hypnospace got a lot right.
Apparently, Johnathan Blow had a hand in the first version with Bernt Habermeier in '96.
>>529071876Ooooh. I definitely see the ressemblance.
>>529062339I believe its the final possible contract for the "???", the collector slug I think, whence instead of facing the anomaly you're tasked with you instead face a big ass ship which is on par with first phase flagship.
>>529073187You can get by with dodging and blocking just fine. Even the special attacks for which the game encourages deflections can be dodged with careful positioning.
Alright bought Riftbreaker. I have access now to the workshop mods and I can play multiplayer with people. Plus the polski devs are good eggs.
Also started again from zero just because.
Says before the kill count reaches the hundred thousands.
>Find new incredible weapon in ftl
>Get to use it once or twice
>Next ship afterward get a lucky strike on my guns and proceed to curbstomp me as everything go fubar in literal seconds
God damn it, it was so stupidly strong too, 1 power for 60 crew damage and 10 shield piercing, all on a 8 sec cooldown... Im starting to remember why I had dropped FTL all those years ago.
>>529083881It's good fun. Like Factorio, but good.
Can't vouch for DLCs though.
>>528761831I've now played this game, and fuck me this might be the worst survivor clone I've seen yet. I like the coomer concept, but god damn, this should have been free to play at best.
>>529088136Play VS, it looks like shit but it quickly becomes charming.
The guy made a point of preserving all of the graphical quirks with the engine switch from a browser game
Don't see a separate general for it, so I'll write it here: I am not a fan of the final boss of the Lies of P DLC. It does everything I don't like
>Phase 1 is so easy, and phase 2 is so hard, that the experience of fighting phase 1 is ruined: you're not having fun, it's a time wasting chore, you're just paying the tax to see the super moves later on that keep killing you.
>Wow, that super move is so cool. It looks cool, it sounds cool, it is cool, it's cool in every way. How can we make sure that the player will be completely fucking sick of it, with 100% certainty? Make him need to spend at least an hour labbing that one fucking move out to dodge it perfectly, since he'll do it again at 10% HP when you're out of healing.
>Difficulty based around halty jerky baity attack animations that you have to unlearn muscle memory to avoid or parry, and AoEs that are carefully calibrated to look like there's safe zones but aren't, iframing is required.
>Claptrap dialogue that won't shut the fuck up the whole time.
Really not a fun fight to learn. IMO one of the prime examples of a boss that's more fun to watch Ongbal nohit than to lab out yourself.
>there's a goddamn fishing minigame submod for ftl multiverse
One step closer to FTL becoming a true sandbox RPG.
Don't see a separate general for it, so I'll write it here: I am not a fan of the axe of Medievil. It does everything I don't like
>looks fucking cool
>range sucks on the primary attack, and no combo, with long recovery
>on secondary attack, the missile is slow, and doesn't come back right away in your hand
>primary attack forces you to be very aggressive to get the demons in range, but Daniel swings slower than he can walk, so you end up taking contact damage from just touching the demons
>secondary attack forces you to run around the map which makes you look like a prancing lala homo

๐
>>529051338Can't be, no animal ears.
>>529097309That is a terrible animation. Half a notch above GMod-tier and that's pushing it.
>>529091946>Phase 1 is so easyI struggled with it so much that I was not expecting a phase 2. But after getting it down enjoyed the contrast between mastering the first phase to barely surviving in the second. That's probably what the devs were going for.
>he'll do it againLiked that, ended up grinning the first time I died to it because of course the devs would repeat it to ensure the first time wasn't a fluke. Barely making it through with no healing left was an adrenaline rush games hadn't evoked in years. Porbably would have soured on it if it had taken another dozen attempts though.
>halty jerky baity attack animationsI was parrying as soon as I saw the hit coming same as with most other attacks. Was also tricked by how the AoE looks, but didn't notice baity animations, maybe they were too fast for me see? Aside from the grab which was initially frustrating. The delay is long and clearly meant to cause panic, but consistent. Wasn't so bad after learning to take a breath and wait. Problem was that it did over a full healthbar of damage. Had to level up for the first time in thee DLC because a 1-hit kill is too much.
>dialogueYeah that wore thin, had to turn it (and the music) down to better hear audio cues, the sound effects of his attacks seemed quieter than before. Overall it was certainly a step down from the other bosses. Not as creative as the puppeteer or enjoyable as the giant monster. But still impressive how much care and effort went into it, even if it didn't all pay off.
Anika

๐
>>529097795Yup. But I stopped doing animations a while ago, so the few skills I had rusted.
>>529098003I feel that phase 1 is pretty easy because you don't practically die in one hit for missing a block. If you fuck up the timing and imperfect block, the chip damage is recoverable and he gives you openings to do it. His combos are flashy but it's actually pretty forgiving. A lot of people tend to forget that in Lies of P you actually can just block damage. Whereas in phase 2, when you fuck up, boom there goes almost all your life bar every time.
>>529094054Is multiverse an open world? Just a linear sector rush like the vanilla game?
>>529103031Still a linear sector rush, it was just a joke. But there is a console command to effectively turn off the Rebel fleet so you can freely explore the sector
It is (slightly) more of an RPG than vanilla though, so all it really needs it the open world.
>>529103741What a shame.
I remember back when FTL was new, there was a mod that turned it into endless open world.
The idea was excellent, far better than vanilla FTL, but it was rather hastily made and poorly balanced.
>>529103994Supposedly Multiverse will be getting an endless-mode addon come 6.0, but considering development is almost as glacial as Project Zomboid, that's still years away.
>>529104676That doesn't sound like much.
If all the content bloat it has had been designed for an open-ended but somewhat structured world rather than a linear sector corridor, it could be an amazing game.
Just finished Beyond Citadel. I don't really understand what the lore was; I've seen posts on things like Tycho and Martyr fucking at some point between games and Martyr getting pregnant, but I didn't run across anything suggesting that in the game. I thought Martyr fucked her brother and was punished (by the machine angels?) for it, but Elulu took the bullet for her. I have no clue how he would have done that either.
In the end, I wish there were more games like this. It reminds me of a cross between Marathon, Blame!, and NGE.
I'm so fucking torn on these /indie/, they all look good, I got the cash, hell cash isn't an issue for these or upcoming games I want, but my backlog man.
I'm even tempted to try before I buy if you know what I mean, but I'd rather not go through the hassle of trying all 3 first.
Thoughts, Anons? Someone mentioned Ravenfield last thread and there's a few GRIP clips, not sure on Severed Steel. If I had to get one I'd get GRIP.

๐
>>529073281It's one of those chemistry tricks
>>529098003Question on the game: How open is it?
Is it fully linear, or more Souls-esque, with closed of levels that still have some openness to them (I'm shit at describing these things)
>>529117273There's more lore in the dev's twitter posts
Tycho and Martyr fucked in Citadel but then they died at the end of the game when Martyt set off the purifying nuke. Esqua (their child) somehow survived as an embryo (because he had no sin) and was picked off by a starship (???).
Both Elulu and Martyr ended up paying for their sin of incest, Elulu was ripped apart and Martyr had their incest babies ripped off from her.
>>529119538Always try before buying if you can.
>>529096575>weapon so slow it ends up with you taking contact damage half the timeHate this shit.
>>529119538Severed Steel is a pretty neat game, but if you just want to beat the game to fill up your checklist, then I'd say skip it and just buy Echo Point Nova (or wait for a deeper discount) by the same dev.
>>529138127It's even more of an issue in old games where just touching the enemy is enough to kill you. And since it's an old game, enemies are fast.
>>529139538pic unrelated?
>>529145108Yes. I wanted to comment on the priory having lava caves underneath it but then someone commented and I forgot I had the picture linked.
>>529126798It's not very open. Each level is basically a straight line from beginning to boss. It's a lot like the middle part of DS3 between Undead Settlement and Irithyll in that regard. It's more of a combat game like Sekiro. Personally, I think Lies of P's combat is the pinnacle of the genre.
>>529119538Buy GRIP Anon, it's good, and cheap
Not sure on the other two, like
>>529138523 said might be best to just wait til the other devs game gets a bigger discount, looks really good. And that Ravenfield one looks a little pricy, if you're gonna pirate before you buy do it with the most expensive one
>>529126798>>529146780Openness of each area varies between DS3 and Bloodborne levels. 'straight line' isn't quite right though, the path frequently loops back on itself with unlocked shortcuts, and there are plenty of diversionary side paths. But it's just never enough to get lost exploring like in DS1. The DLC does large, more open areas with more complex layouts. I got lost a few times in the underground facility.
>>529091946Remind me of ghost of tsushima dlc final boss
FUCK that spear wombo combo she spam. I could deal with her every other weapon style no hit but her spear attacks come to freaking quickly its nigh impossible to dodge or parry them reliably. It feel like having a duel in elden ring/dark soul against a guy who genuinely excel at the game, but randomly switch to the most cancerous meta shit possible every few combos.
>>529162693I still haven't finished Gohst of Tsushima, but fuck, it's good.

so, i reached slay the princess ending of me and her becoming gods and me ultimately killing her in the cabin and creating a painless world but how do i go for the other endings/chapter ramifications?
like, is the hero and the princess always chapter one and depeding on minimal choices i get the extra cgs from it? i'm very confused
>>529173161Don't buy porn games, use kemono or F95, might be able to find some Anons with links on lewd boards
>>529182435ryuugames is also useful for jap stuff.
>>529173161Generally the only porn games I recommend are Race (especially Sengoku) and Monster Girl Quest. They're the best games that happen to also be porn.
Other than that, just find whatever you're into and get that.
I bought Aska the other day. I like it, but man, I cannot seem to get a decent start going at all.
>>529182435>>529173161I'm looking to get https://store.steampowered.com/app/2529520/Magical_Girl_Konoha/ at least it has been in my backlog since it came out.
Anyone knows how good the combat is? Does it need +18 patch?
>>529182869>Sengoku RanceMan, that game's combat is fucking addictive. I wish someone made a game with that combat and expanded map and units. Came for the lewds, stayed for the combat.
>>529184608I love the village building in that game, is like Medieval Dynasty but with better combat and village mechanics.
I remember I tried Assassinโs creed 1 a long time ago but the weird machine that reads genetic memory was kinda a derpy concept for me, and the gameplay didn't really click. Should I give it another go?
>you can scan some plants to increase their research levels so they give more resources
>but you can get a chance for a random drop of research if you destroy the plant too
>same for animals, but they give damage bonus
I like how the game incentives destroying the local fauna and flora
Also dafuq is happening with 4chan? I'm getting errors loading the captcha and sending posts.
>>529189979One of my gripes with the game is how much it talks about preserving and coexisting with nature, but literally every single mechanic pushes you towards being an engine of ecological devastation that would make a Captain Planet villain think you're a goddamn nutcase. If there was anything at all that made 'going green' even possible, even just a Factorio-esque pollution mechanic for the base attacks, that'd be one thing, but the narrative just falls flat on its face from how entirely disconnected it is from the gameplay.
>>529191302Why not? The game has a like a bazillion continuations. Something must be fun.
>>529189469Better off watching a "movie" of AssCreed 1 and start with 2 instead.
1 is just clunky and I can't find myself replaying it, but 2 feels more fluid and welcoming even.
>>529189469If you're only in it for the gameplay, starting with 2 might be better because 1 was pretty damn rough.
>>529193248Yeah, but... not the first games.
>>529127158It was originally supposed to be an h-game, wasn't it?
Also, how does sin and punishment work? A bunch of angels inexplicably show up and tear off your limbs?
I feel like there must have been some translation errors that made things more difficult to understand: angels, true angels, fake angels, machine angels, angel ships, etc.
Were there ever any actual angels? I initially thought that the angels were cybernetic life or cyborgs, but there's that one artifact text saying that the angels kept replacing body parts with cybernetics.
I wish doekuramori would just make a manga.
I just reached the Vault and beat the last boss of Halls of Torment.
Turns out the last/extra boss is the merchant npc that becomes the lord of greed and there is even a ending cutscene, Diablo 1-2 style, with a hook for a sequel.
This is so kino for a surviorslop game.
Remember to always love yourself. It's the best revenge against those that have wronged you.

But, VNs. Not games.
>>529196790I should write one of these.
bro went all in on their dream world and forgot to make it playable
>>529201909That game is obtuse and lacks information on purpose, as per the dev's "vision".
I don't recommend it.
>>529146780>DS3 between Undead Settlement and IrithyllAssuming you're excluding Undead Cathedral from that, since that is probably one of my favorite Dark Souls levels in terms of how it loops back on itself
>>528870160I doubt the solo dev considered that making literally everything a physics object, from bullets to ejected rounds (empty or screwed up because you suck at cycling), then multiplying that by 15 enemies at once with automatic weapons might tax systems.
>>529090859How was this anyway? Heard it got repetitive too early
>>529194850Originally the Martyr was actually supposed to be the "Medium" of Delirium, the angel of lust. Her armor was supposed to represent that, and act as a sort of psi-op for dudes with their head in their groin for her to kill them easier. there's some argument for the soldiers you kill in the game being nothing more than mindless clones, made entirely female to PTSD guys so bad they'd refuse to fight because they can't accept pretty things can be dangerous. Similar to how and why the Martyr is cloned so much. It's also why Delirium looks suspiciously like her and her brother fused at the groin.
She instead became an "animal" of sorts. Because they are so simple, they can't actually sin, it's just nature. They only have the power to punish the sinful. Because Elulu took the full blame, she was absolved. They tried to go back and punish her once they realized he was taking the blame, she had forced herself on him, but having committed the purification for that sin already, they had blown their mandate. She was equivalent to an animal at that point. So they treated her like one. This is where she was taken and made into a Martyr. This is also why she can kill demons, and angels, and can't directly suffer their punishment like why Charity didn't just do that same thing to you in the intermission you fight him in. There is no inherent sinful intent in her acts; she is a programmed animal. All she has is the mandate.
>>529168040Is this cultic? Has there been any news on chapter 2?
>>529190967>>529189979>Not being big brained enough to understand how since you are on the planet, you also now part of that planet ecosystem and thus any action you do is technically also part of that ecosystem, thus is entirely natural and ecofriendly to wipe out competing lifeforms.
>>529205097From reading the cg tips in Beyond Citadel, Ilulu sacrifying hinself for martyr sake feel like a coping mechanism by her, as its implied in the wording that the life of their unborn child is what was taken instead of her own. I should redownload the game to verify, I think its the cg for full conpletion of the 5th or 6th chapter
>>529201909The setting of this game reminds me of muv luv(unlimited?).
>>529205097I don't think I've ever seen a thinner veil for someone's fetish. Like why even try to hide it at that point.
>>529206324Man is of nature, thus all man's creations and actions are natural.
>>529186636It's nice, yeah. My main issue with it so far is that I keep misjudging how much space I'll need so everything ends up being rather haphazard in its placement and that just triggers me something fierce. I'm super particular with that stuff when it comes to games like this.
Also, I haven't quite figured out how the whole logistics thing works yet. I never seem to have enough of what I need with tons of excess of other stuff just laying around.

>>529205097Hard to answer, but I think it's... not very good. Not enough weapon variety, always ammo shortages, and enemies are raelly annoying to deal with. Very hard, too.
if I wanted to be a good goy and buy say Hades 2, but I've been playing a torrent of it, can I pull the save file and put it through the game on steam? Or should I just continue pirating it
>>529213403That's what I thought. Selaco is the same way in every regard, just sci-fi'd. Glad I spent that on Turbo Overkill.
>>529215550Honestly up to you, I might buy just because they always increase the price on release and Hades 1 was pretty fun and I think you can use your save if you pirated a steam version
>>529215723I mean, I got a LOT of artefacts, so maybe I'm not playing properly, but an artefact that let me recover health when I kill enemies is useless if I'm out of ammos for the pistol and the shotgun and I'm stuck using slow-missiles weapons to kill a fast, flying enemy.
Boltgun is a lot more to my taste.
>>529210990Its actually aint that bad of a ship, but the lack of shield basically mean you're fucked if you didnt cripple the enemy means of damaging you during the stealth. So in turn if you dont get a lucky hacking system early on you hit a wall during late game because the ships have so much shields you cant damage their sys enough to save yourself. Or you get wep with shield piercing, but then you get fucked the moment they have a defende drone.
>>529215550Pretty sure saves are kept apart from the gamefile for 99% of games, just make a backup incase there is a conflict or it corrupt your save due to incompatibility between versions.
>>529216015sounds like forgive me father in a way. You use the infinite ammo talisman, it lasts for like 5 seconds, 2 of which are you putting the talisman away.
>>529215918I went back to Hades 1 last week and wow, made me realize just how much more 2 has
>>529216440cool, good to know
it wouldn't be the *worst* thing to start from scratch, but its nice to get past the mandatory "erm, can't do X because you gotta play more arbitrarily"
>>529216916Nah, more like... Artefacts are semi-rare, I got 9 of the basic vampire one, but I tend to play very slowly since my aim is shit and maps are big.
There's one that reflect all missiles but I never use it.
>>529205097How does punishment work though? Or purification, absolution, and [insert Christian buzzword here]? So Martyr and Elulu fugged, and some angels swooped down to judge him, but Martyr tanked the punishment? But nugget Elulu went through that whole body deterioration phase, so do the angels only metaphorically tear people apart through disease/viruses and so on?
What's the mechanism for all of these things?
>>529216943turns out I didn't need to do anything, it auto loaded the save despite being in a totally different file
>>529220632there's a lot of stuff that's detailed lore that would go into explaining this completely, but the jist is that these angels and demons have power and protection against you if you've truly committed their opposite. If you haven't, they have to go after you physically. However, if they're going after you physically, it means they have no protection against you, either. It's why the war between angels and humans was an actual war for quite some time, instead of just an immediate starry night. It's also why the Martyr only has the soulless mandate. No maliciousness nor virtue in the intent. Only a goal. She's starting to malfunction and is an unreliable narrator for all the nugget scenes, by the way, meaning you can't trust those entirely. The images she sees of Elulu are also extremely suspect, considering that the fragments you're carrying around and where you find them all seem to be in places the Martyr would want to visit, with things she'd want to hear. The idea that 10 billion humans were harvested to form these fragments, and his personality would be the dominant one, is... Well, the devil shows you what you like to see, and considering how the script was flipped it on what was holy or not, you weren't making "God."

>>529119538severed steel is great but short. Might be able to single-session it if you get good at it. But it opens up in a way afterwards that as you get better, you start seeing the levels in different ways so might want to try and re-do them in increasingly crazy ways. Then it has the roguelike mode and level editor.
>>529229260last time I checked on ravenfield they had a Total Conversion that was Guardsmen vs. Necrons. Not sure how that mod's doing.
>>529227973also, Elulu tanked for martyr, not the other way around. She forced herself on him, he was innocent. He felt like such dead weight to her he thought he'd free her by being dead well before this on top of it. He still loved her regardless, so took the punishment instead. Once the sin had been cleansed, they realized it hadn't been his, and turned on the Martyr physically to "right their mistake."
There's some other speculations, but none of it is crystal clear, so don't get too deep into a "clear system". Like how Elulu had a cyber-spine in one of the fragment scenes, meaning this was a thing for humans before the apocalypse and may have been related to his nugget-ism. Or how Martyr is classified as a divine object, which is for human made objects that are kept like museum pieces, meaning she was made by humans and never activated in time to actually save anyone.
>>529227973>power and protectionIs this like the Sleeping God's Enlightenment wave? A cogitohazard sort of thing?
>truly committed their oppositeSo angels and demons can only affect you like this if you're diametrically opposed to them in thought and action? Or can they only affect you a certain degree? Like let's say you're not particularly proud, gluttonous, envious, wrathful, or greedy, but you're really slothful and lustful, the angels would be able to get to you but not as much as someone who was more sinful?

Wait, what the fuck did I just stumble into?
Either way, yellow paint is stupid in most cases, especially if you're trying to go for a realistic look. I think Far Cry 3(?) had a better solution, where climbable ledges had some ropes strewn on them. Also kinda silly when you think about it, but a little less intrusive.
I think a big culprit is visuals getting more and more realistic looking. In a low poly PS1 game it's easy to suspend disbelief and accept that only some doors have handles and comically large keyholes and only those are operable. In a realistic looking game that might look silly.
Either way, using yellow paint as your marker feels like admitting defeat that you couldn't come up with anything more creative

>>529266640Oh, there's a general, sorry.
It doesn't fully click for me, but I really liked the idea of having upgrades that weren't just firepower boosts like sentries and such, but it seems the devs cut back on these big times. No more transports, not sure the ballistic shield is still interesting...
>>529267498I want the tank and IFV back. It seems it is the same engine of HD1 but tweaked, which explains why the reticence in adding a bigger vehicle and bigger maps like in HD1. Now Arrowhead(the devs) are the only company that works with that engine, now that Autodesk(the maker of said enghine) discontinued the development and sale of the engine. Which explains why it runs like shit.
I should upgrade my ageing PC, but 80 to 90% of the games I play run perfectly fine, and if you ignore random BSDs I get every now and then, it works fine, so I really prefer to spend the money on more indies or other hobbies. /blog
Same with Darktide btw. I bought it because I loved L4D2, and I told it was similar but 40k, which I love dearly too. But it also just doesn't click for me.
Both Darktide and HD2 have been my worst purchases in the last couple of years. Which overall isn't that bad, given that I know people with an endless Steam library full of games that they never played.
>>529268475I like Darktides, but at the same time, I prefer Warhammer Fantasy to Warhammer 40000, so I still prefer Vermintides 2 to it. But what made me drop Darktides was that the game is poorly optimized, run like crap, AND the Arbites that was announced a while ago... is a paid DLC.
>my worst purchases in the last couple of yearsI got you beaten. Mine were Starforge, Clockwork Empire, and EYE Divine Cybermancy. One of these isn't as shitty as the others, but still a big regret.
>>529268728>I still prefer Vermintides 2I tried Vermintide 2, but I don't really fancy Fantasy. And the free weekend I played put me with a lot of people that didn't know what they were doing, so the general experience was kinda bad. So I just gave up on it.
With Darktide I also hated, how randoms would aggro the daemons and get everyone killed. How difficult is not aggroing what will if not wipe, at least severely injure all the party, with one or two losses?
>>529266640The only co-op game that I really kept playing for a long time was DRG, everything else I fell for due to friends wanting to play it only to end up the only one to still be playing after 20 or so hours. But DRG? It's great with randoms I didn't tire of it until 700+ hours.

>>529269192Maybe at launch it was this bad, but nowadays people actively avoid Deamonhosts, and on average randoms tend to be pretty competent, even before the DLC I'd clear the 2nd hardest mission diff with only moderate effort. >>529228097sovl overload, I remember these games
>>529312739Exactly. How to use them?
You'd figure that question out if you had a brain.
I died during a perma-death save while playing Subnautica (went toward the ship after getting the rad suit, not knowing Levantines hang out there) Now I don't have the drive to start over. The game was honestly kinda boring and sloppy. If there was no perma-death the game would be piss easy and wouldn't be scary or interesting at all. Survival crafting as a genre was a mistake.
>>529316728it is a game about exploration
past about half an hour in you should be entirely unthreatened by food or water and nothing will kill you by surprise unless you're blind and deaf
time for another adventure /indie/!
>>529316728>play perma death>drop after dyingmany such cases. For the future: Don't enable perma death in games where it's optional, unless you are the kind of mega autist who enjoys doing the same boring shit over and over again.
Perma death is good in games that are designed for it: Roguelikes, Xcom, that kinda stuff. Every other game that I've ever played with optional hardcore / perma death mode just involved boringly starting over again and being repetitive as shit.
Best example: Diablo / PoE. I truly do not see what people enjoy about the hardcore mode in these games. All the fun is in the end-game, the high level dungeons/rifts/maps/ubers or whatever. You make one mistake, take on more than you can handle, or hell, your internet or the server lags? It's bag to hours and hours of fucking grind for you. Where is the fun in being forced to do the non-threatening, un-interesting boring level grind again when you fuck up? Granted, you certainly care more about not dying, and might have a huge emotional response if you die, but is that truly worth all that fucking grind again? Who the fuck enjoys dying in The Last of Us and then playing through all that story again? Permadeath was already annoying in coinmunchers, but a game like Metal Slug could be beat in about an hour, so starting fresh was not that big a deal when you had to come back another day with more coins. But games where you spend like 10 hours grinding, base building and collecting shit only to lose it to some nonsense? Fuck me. I truly do not get why people enjoy that shit. "Hey congratz you died, you get to do the worst part of the game again!"
>>529258964>>529312502nta, but like many other "help" options, yellow paint should be a toggle. Because giving players who need help, help is always a good thing. But you need to do it in a way that doesn't ruin it for everyone else. There's nothing worse, than playing a game like God of War that has light puzzle elements, being just about to figure out the puzzle, and then hearing boy go: "I wonder if you can use your axe on that thing over there" or whatever. Even worse in games that don't have a pet boy, where your character just starts fucking talking to themselves.
Yellow paint is the same thing: It robs you of the abilitly of finding out naturally where to go, by plastering a big bright "CHECK THIS OUT".
And while there's nothing wrong with a game organically leading you towards stuff (this has existed basically forever, prime example is Mario 64 and Banjo using coins / notes to lead you to places of interest) Yellow paint does it in such an intrusive way that it becomes annoying.
I actually complained about this when playing the Tomb Raider reboot. All the valid targets for rope arrows had rope tied around it to create a white surface, even in places where it made no sense for rope to be tied up. Like, why the fuck is there a bunch of rope tied around these Japanese style gates? Why is there tons of rope on part of a random door? Why is there rope around a random tree? Environmentally, it made no sense.
But I get that some players get fucking lost as all hell, that not everyone has a thousand fucking games on steam and thus is adept in figuring this shit out, so some people need help in knowing where to shoot a rope, where they can climb, what is breakable, and how to figure out the puzzle they're stuck on without asking online. So to me the most sensible solution is: Make it an optional toggle. You wouldn't put on a color blind filter by default with no option to turn it off, so why do it with this kind of help?
>>529323684I played a demo that had it as a toggle during next fest, felt good.
Also I agree completely, games are always guiding the player, but if it's done well, you'll never notice you're being guided. Yellow paint is so obvious that it absolutely becomes annoying.
>>529329625Yeah. Having a toggle, or having a "give me a hint" button is I think a great solution. Because I don't want to be one of these "git gud" assholes, who just expects every player to have same level of expertise as them. I played vidya for decades, so I don't need that shit. But I also want to be able to sit someone in front of a game who has never gamed in their life, and let them have a chance of getting through it.
People often don't realize how much "video game training" they have had, and how shit that comes naturally to people like us, is rocket science to outsiders.
>>529330693I mean when I was a child, shadow of the colossus was one of the first third person adventure games I played and I didn't really need gigantic GO HERE hints on every little ledge to figure it out.
It's a fine accessibility option but I think the overwhelming majority of people should be able to find their way through a game if the devs paid a little attention to their level design.
>>529331129The reason you didn't need such help in the era of PS2 games, was because these games were much more limited in the options they give you, so when something was interactable, it was much more obvious. You didn't have as many ways to go (in most cases), and even then Shadow of Colossus literally had a sword that would beam a ray of light to where you need to go. So your example of "we don't need that kinda help" literally has that kinda help. Ocarina of Time as well, noticed that it's easy to get lost on where to go, so Navi annoys you every 30 minutes.
And I'm not so sure about overwhelming majority. I think this is exactly what I was talking about: You see how easy it is for you, you probably don't consider yourself the greatest gamer of all time, so you think it probably must be pretty easy for most people. But trust me: Video game skill goes LOW. I've seen people struggle to run straight on a controller. But still all that being said: I still think a toggle is the best option. There for the ones who need it, able to be turned off for the people who played games before.
i am really starting to get tired of these shitty anime aesthetic games with female protagonists
>>529332220The sword didn't really tell you how to get there, it just pointed you in a general direction. Finer navigation than that was up to you. The trip to every colossus was sort of a short adventure rather than following a waypoint on a compass.
If we compared it to modern direction it would have just had a big line of some kind of paint lead you to the region and cover the ledges you needed to use in paint.
I was a borderline toddler at the time so I doubt my gaming skill and intuition was incredible.
>>529332673Welcome to 4ch, it's not as bad on other sites where you can filter out the weeb crap but it's literally baked into this sites DNA
>>529335532why are you here
>>529323684Its a level design issue, because there so much visual clutter due to over emphasis on graphical design, it would be easy to dismiss a potential avenue as part of the decor, so they compensate by making the way to go contrast with said decor. That in turn create a dissonance because you're effectively being railroaded toward a specific point, so the level end up feeling like a fancy corridor where the path forward is beyond obvious, which often clash with the implications caused by the realistic visual style, that insinuate you could go wherever like irl whennyou obviously cant due to engine limitations.
Basically, its a crutch to compensate bad level design. Not an inherently bad thing, but its used way too often and tend to turn the game from a puzzle solving pov (ie how do I cross this hazard?) to purely mechanical reflex and pattern recognition (oh rope is there, so I shoot it with rope arrow then I can climb), which severely hamper immersion and replayability.

>>529337595I mean, I wouldn't always call it "bad level design". It is a fact that games these days have a shitton more detail than games did 20 years ago. You are correct that these days it is much easier to mistake something as part of the decor. Almost every game puts a white dot on interactables that are on tables and such, because while 20 years ago, you would have had one table in a room, with maybe 1 lamp, and one big obvious item on it that would make you want to go check it out, these days you can have a photorealistic table, and the fact that there is something on the table that is relevant to the story, is not so obvious because it might be hard to distinuish it from all the other photorealistic clutter. And there is very little in terms of level design that can change that, unless we go back to mostly empty rooms
>>529343181>Playing Rampage knights multiplayer with my dad and had to keep telling him not to hit the coloured barrels.Exactly what I'm talking about. There was also this youtuber making his non-gaming GF play games, and if I recall correctly there was stuff like her not realizing she could look around with the mouse. Something that you and I just do instinctively, without even thinking about it. And sometimes, because this now comes as natural to us as breathing, we forget that this is skill we learned, and not an inate, natural knowledge.
>>529332220Not the guy you're talking to but I actually got stuck on SotC and I was probably like 17 or 18 at the time, more specifically I got to the third colossus and couldn't figure out what to do to beat it and had to look it up.
The idea that you could use the environment to break the colossus's club by baiting him to attack you on the concrete circle in the middle blew my mind, an entire lifetime of gaming up to that point without things of that nature being possible meant I'd never have even considered it and I would have been stuck forever unless I randomly got lucky. Some of us are just stuck in our own way of thinking.

>>529366295>What genre is it?It's an action platformer.
>What is a run like?A run is basically going through levels looking for level up scrolls that provide one of three stat boosts. You're still incentivized to kill enemies because your enemies give you: (1) money for purchasing better equipment from merchants, (2) potential cell blueprints for gear to be added to your seed generation and (3) because you get an improved gear reward at the end of a biome for killing a set number of enemies.
After every 2 biomes, you get a boss. The run ends after a 4th boss (or a fifth on the highest difficulty).
All gear has randomized Diablo-like affixes, though unlike Diablo you have way more control over your affixes. Over the course of the run, you make a build that can melt through bosses and content.
>Endgame goal?Getting all the hundreds of cell blueprints (they all give you weapons with very diverse ways of playing).
Unlocking all the dozens and dozens of costumes, most of which are hidden behind challenge restrictions (like beating bosses on the hardest difficulty without taking damage).
Leveling up and maxing out a forge that adds permanent buffs to your weapons.
Beating all five "boss cell" difficulty levels (technically, it's six if you count your initial starting difficulty)
>Why is it special? The sheer amount of difficulty tuning and quality of life.
The difficulty can be as accessible or as insanely hard as you want it to be.
It has a training mode that allows you to practice against any enemy or boss you have already encountered at least once.
You can lock generated seeds to practice on them.
You can roll back your game to earlier balance patches.
And a ton of other amazing things, like the utterly amazing animation work and satisfying gamefeel.

The game has accumulated a ton of content updates over the years. As a result, you now have a shit ton of options for how you can map your run. Pic related.
Important note: The game advertises itself as a "Souls-lite". Not a Souls-Like, but a Souls-lite. This is a very deliberate choice of words from the developers, because other than some thematic resemblances (dying kingdom, undead hero), the combat plays nothing like a Souls game. Which is good because I hate Souls games but love Dead Cells.
Unlike a Souls game, Dead Cells is all about speed and crowd control. Mastery of the game involves being able to blaze through biomes to find level up scrolls while also carefully kiting, killing and managing the crowds of enemies coming your way, all while not getting hit and being able to make do with whatever weapons and tools the game gives you over the course of a run.
On the highest difficulty, enemies can hound you almost forever because they can teleport to you and sense you if you're in an adjacent room.
>>529373314>>529373614Thanks for the long and detailed redpill, senpai. Maybe I'll buy that shit on sale.

>>529374965How important is the DLC?
Base game is a little over $4 in Vietnam
>>529378004You still get a hefty amount of content just from the base game, but the DLC has so many fun weapons, cool biomes and tough boss fights.
The DLC package is on sale often, so just get the base game and try it out. The base game alone have more than enough content and replayability to keep you satisfied until the next major DLC package sale.

>>529372191I recall hearing a lot of drama about how the game went to shit back when Gearbox brought out the original dev, and it seem a recent update to the EULA by take-two is the source of the most recent reason for outrage. And from what I'm reading, its pure bullshit that seem outright illegal in many countries.
>>529382036Should I get the original ROR or ROR2? Or are the ROR games bad and I should avoid them?
>>529382119Just pirate them, original dev doesn't exist anymore so its just Gearbox and Taketwo, both of whom you shouldn't give money to because they're greedy and shitty companies. In term of gameplay they're fine, never played 1 but the 2nd is an allright roguelike albeit the rng from the roguelike mechanics piss me off, since buffs comes from random item which may not work with your current character when they aren't outright detrimental.
Only annoying thing from pirating it is you can't play multi which is fun, but its entirely doable to play the game alone.

Call me a normie, but The Talos Principle 2 did "philosophy quotes" thing much, much better than The Witness. In The Witness, it's just meaningless babble. In Talos Principle 2, it's actually an interesting debate that's plot-relevant.
>>529480512Well, yes? I don't think anyone seriously argues against Talos Principle 2 doing philosophizing better than The Witness.

What you want to do is just buy either the base game, or base + survivors. I actively do not recommend getting the full bundle with seekers for a new player. Seekers adds a fuck ton of new shit that will feel impenetrable and overwhelming for someone who hasn't exhausted the base game. Survivors adds very little in comparison but some of the new items make the game much easier and more fun. But if money is a thing then the base game is still good too it's just more challenging.

>>529524968Glad you enjoyed it.
Feel free to ask me anything, and I'll answer to the best of my abilities.
Since you just started, your goal should be to unlock all permanent runes first so that you can get the abilities (like slamming on the ground so that you can break cracked floors or climbing vines) that actually allow you to access any biome you want.
You should also focus on getting flask upgrades and other beneficial permanent upgrades you can get at the Collector in exchange for your cells. See: https://deadcells.wiki.gg/wiki/Runes_and_upgrades
Finally, in terms of permanent upgrades, you should also focus on maxing out your blacksmith's forge. Pic related. Doing so will help immensely in your runs, as they will guarantee that your gear will be always be the best possible quality.
Don't worry too much about pushing through with higher boss cells right now.
You need to make sure you have good gameplay fundamentals, like understanding how to dodge enemies, how to crowd control, how to use each weapon (you don't have to master each weapon, you just have to make sure you understand how to use them so that you don't get fucked up in a run if you get a weapon you are unfamiliar with how to use).
Also take the time to really learn what every enemy is capable of doing. Don't be one of those scrubby retards who always run past specific tougher enemies because they can't be bothered to learn how to fight them. You have a training room you can unlock. If there is a tough enemy, take the time to lab out that enemy and learn everything it can do.
>>529559084I tried it. Despite being years older, it runs even worse than Palworld, and I'm not sure how feeding works. I'd rather play Conan Exiles than ARK.

Go try Chinese Frontiers it's getting a patch that'll hopefully be good.
>>529577306>its super grindyThe grind entirely depends on the settings. Enabling small tribes and difficulty level to 5 (meaning: levels come in increments of 5) is a good start.
Beyond that, I removed the need to breed for mutations in mine by setting wild dino levels higher using a mod, saving time for boss prep. Adjusted harvesting rates to still have a little grind but not make it a slog, XP rates were boosted and stat gains per player level were boosted too. I also modified stack sizes so wood and stone etc holds 200.
The .ini's in the game are powerful tools once you read up on what adjusts what, I haven't played ARK in a hot minute but I'd be willing to give some more pointers if you wanna give it another shot.

>>529597114The gameplay is actually fun, only wish I could play with someone else as the multi seem fun due to synergies between the classes. Brought it on a whim, imo worth it, butt, boobs and hips slider are a thing but whatever, a little fanservice never killed anybody.
>>529558591>>529559084Man, I tried Palworld, and it fucking sucked. It's boring as all hell, catching mons gets hella annoying, specially since the "can't kill mons" ring doesn't apply to all forms of damage, so I hope you don't deal poison or fire damage! I believe it also doesn't count for the mons you have out, so that fucks the entire concept because you have to unequip the fuckers and not bring them with you, aaaaaah.
The whole thing is also unbalanced as all shit. Everyone on the internet tells you "crank up the multiplier options!!" and boy, they weren't kidding. I've played Idle games with less pointless waiting around. Why design your game like this? What is the point in making shit arbitrarily slow? Just fucking balance the game in a way that people don't NEED to crank up the multipliers. Why do you need to catch FUCKING TWELVE of every god damn monster??? What's the god forsaken fucking point of that??? Even Pokemon only made you catch 1 of every mon. There's 187 mons in there now, that's 2244 captures. Talk about fucking stretching your content out.
Honestly, everything in this fucking game is like a 4/10 execution of a pretty cool Idea.
Anons, I've never played Medieval / Sengoku Dynasty, which game would you recommend more to a newfag and why? Or which game is just straight up better? Sengoku is cheaper at least, without any DLC but then again, you know, no DLC to play.
>>529604451The fuck is a "limited game" in this context. Early access?
>>529010134Duskers is a good game, but it's a smaller scale one, and a little niche. The claim to fame is you mostly interact with the world from a remote place, basically using command line commands on an aliens aesthetic tech.
It's a fun gimmick, but it's not the hours and hours that something like subnautica is -- more of a one and done for a few hours kind of thing. Its a nice way to blow a weekend.
>>529559429Yeah I've got the vines and I have upgraded my health flask to two chugs and I got the random starting melee weapon. I'm still often dying embarrassingly early but it's all part of the fun.
>>529584291well bros? why does it feel like I'm the only one playing this damn game
How do boars work in 9 kings? Do your units mount them if they're on adjacent plots, or adjacent in battle? I think if they were mountable in battle, they'd just say near them, so adjacent likely refers to the plots
That makes their placement so fucky. Because they need HP, and I always place my HP+ forest things in a + pattern so that four units gain from it at the same time
>>529634684What the fuck is nine kings.
>>529634684you can't expect everyone to know your game in a general which, quite possibly, encompasses the most games out of all of them
>>529635691Wrong. That's be the Mario general.
>>529634749>>529635691Not that guy, but I figured most here would know 9 kings since seemingly ever indietuber's been playing the demo and now release to death.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2784470/9_Kings/
>>529189469What the other anson said. AssCreed 1 was pretty cool and unique for its time, but the later games refined some of the mechanics.
I think I prefer 1 conceptually over 2, because you are actually already a highly trained assassin and all the missions are either hits or prep work for the hits, but it gets a bit repetitive quite quickly. 2 is more of a coming of age story of someone who isn't an Assassin finding into their world.
As for the genetic memory machine I do agree that it's kinda funky as a premise, but at least it allows them to tie all the games taking place in all sorts of places in times into a single narrative (at least up until 3, dunno where it went from there). And I personally am a sucker for the whole "What if every conspiracy theory is true and all of history is fake" thing they got going.
>>529636317>city builder>roguelikeI'm curiou-

>Mfw the mine launching arty ship
God what an heap of shit. I mean sure it does a ton of dmg, but is so slow to fire It just serve to execute the nearly dead enemy, and the 2 mine launchers it start with are dogshit worth only their scrap at the merchant.
>>529649167Yes, but it also explains why the game is noticeably darker and philosophical, don't get me wrong, it's still a very light game but some of the conversations are a lot more mature and nuanced than previous games. Light spoiler for the mid game (shrine 4):
The first mention of tamitaya (the spell that banish monsters back to the forest of beginning instead of killing them) is very late in the game compared to other entries and comes with a character saying there is no real difference for the living since monsters leave corpses and can never come back to this plane of existence. That's a very dark way to turn the "no we're not really killing them, we're sending them to the great farm in the sky" spell into something darker without retconning anything or making the game feel too dark, it's a logical expansion on established lore.
Anon, in Sengoku Dynasty, when I set a villager to harvest, does my village location & what's around matter for what they harvest? Or is it just: "If you set it for this resource, that amount will magically appear in your storage"? Like for food can I just set them to collect hundreds of fucking eggs and be apparently pretty set on food? (specially considering I haven't seen a single bird around)
>>529652615Wait... do you actually banish them?
>>529653061Yes, kinda. It's region-based and season-based, so if you tell your peasants to gather, I dunno, iron in a region where there's none, then they can't.
As far as I know, the ressource just magically appear, no matter how far from your village the nodes are. Your villagers just find a way.
>>529655501Ah, I didn't even get the option to gather Iron. I'm not sure if that's because it's not unlocked, or if that's because my region has no Iron. The game seems a bit janky with not much great info on it out there, but I don't hate it so far. (I'm normally playing eurojank) I noticed I essentially wasted a large part of the first season by going to sleep at night like a total idiot, lmao. (Despite the ability to sleep, and you having survival meters as well as a day / night cycle, sleep does not seem to be necessary)
>>529655942It's an example, but a lot of advanced ressources are region-locked. The starting region has copper, you get tin later to make bronze, and I dropped some iron stuff, so I know it's an option.
Honestly your character is busted: you don't need to sleep, you respawn instantly when killed (which helps with village raids), and you can get a lot of food/wood/medicines if the village starts lacking with something.
And also, you can eat water from a well to fill your hunger bar.
>>529656435I got unlucky and got a raid thread on literally my first day. Luckily it only cost 100 coins to tell them to fuck off, and stone axes sold for almost 10 coins, so I gave the dude a bunch of axes, so that he gave me coin, and then gave him back the coin to tell him to fuck off. I wasn't sure if I could handle a raid so soon.
But yeah so far this reminds me a lot of playing "Minecolonies" a minecraft mod that lets you create a little town where villagers gather all kinds of shit in all kinds of specialized buildings and then make them into more advanced items.
>>529657801The strength of the raid depends from your wealth. My first raid was in the second year, I think, but they came in force, at night, after all my guards went to bed, so I was alone to defend the village.
Died three times, but not a single one survived.
I was curious whether or not they'd attack since I already liberated the region by killing the bandit leader.
I guess it works the same? Dunno, I just find it pretty cozy, though you always need ressources, it's insane.
>>529655501Your weapons and tools are enchanted with a spell that send their souls back to the forest of beginnings which is basically monster's native world. They stay there for a few centuries until they recover their strength and come back. That's the lore reason for why your cutesy farming game has combat and creature husbandry.
>>529659908I see. I don't remember if Rune Factory is the same or not, but I do remember World of Final Fantasy being the same.

>>529666624No. They can't read, sadly.
>>529672574oh shit, I just tried them and figured it out
holy fuck it's broken
I thought spiders die in one turn
goddamn
>>529678074>I thought spiders die in one turnThey're strong.
I want to confess.
I can't replay story games.
Not because i am afraid it will ruin the initial impressions or i will suddenly realize that it's worse than i remember, but because they feel complete. I don't want to return to them, especially after 100% them, even if they're enjoyable mechanically because every character has finished their story and it feels like my job to guide them is done once and for all.
>>529680245Heh, I have a similar kind of autism.
It doesn't prevent me from actually replaying story games. But let's imagine I've gotten a good ending, some part deep down feels bad for clicking the "new game" button, because now I'm ripping away the happy ending from the character and forcing them to go through the whole story again, maybe even to end up with a worse ending, simply because that's the one I was missing for 100%
>>529681083For me, I always remember my first playthought. So even if I replay the game later to get a better ending, in my head, the real ending is the one where the tiefling bard died.
>>529666126"Don't forget: You're here forever." is a classic. Try some anti union ones: "Unions steal your wages". "Would you rather pay a union, or enjoy that PS5?" "You don't need a union, we're already a family" "If you hear someone discussing wages, report them to management!" "Help wanted! Nobody wants to work any more these days!"
"Want to join the career ladder? Apply now for unpaid internship!" "Sexual harassment is not a police matter, talk to Susan in HR!" "Company loyalty รผber alles"
>>529681083I think the only exception to this is probably my favorite game of all time. It was so good, i actually didn't want to finish it for dozens of hours after "completing" it, even though the game allows for this kind of replayability. Then, after finishing it, i immediately restarted.
But it's seated so deeply in my heart that i've spent nearly a whole year after the first discovery just thinking about it constantly during all my free time. And i still think about it years later.
>>529680245>>529681083This reminds me of the Longing (and I think Undertale does this to if you get a certain ending) where it's actually impossible to replay the game (unless you delete some file in your installation folder.
And honestly I can respect that. For the longing it felt very fitting, even though I got what felt a little bit like the joke ending
>>529682947It's possible to nearly guaranteed that with a remote server nowadays unless you're willing to buy new hardware or flash it on the electronic level. Write a very robust client (preferably on assembly and also obfuscate it as fuck to make reverse engineering more difficult), grab client UUIDs, motherboard and CPU serials, and you can almost guarantee that the user won't be able to reset progress. The more redundancy checks - the better, throw in MAC for a good measure too.
First time I'm here in Nightmare Mode! Wish me luck!
>>529680245I can't replay any story based game because I remember them perfectly on next playthrought, but only when I think about playing the game in question. Id hover my mouse over the game in my library, and as I ponder wether or not I should replay because I enjoyed it, I instantly remember the whole game. There are few exceptions to this trend, but alas I'm kind of annoyed it also prevent me from enjoying newer content of some games as I can't be bothered to replay the entire game yet another time to access said content (ie elden ring dlc, which I have yet to try despite going out of my way to avoid any spoiler about it for months now).
>>529683870That sounds dumb.
Have the user buy a one-time login key. Save the CC details.
>>529685205Fortunately Nightmare Mode doesn't do anything to Kolmisilmรค. He was a pushover after the ordinary mobs. Nightmare Mode clear!

>>529686509Keys can be spoofed, then it depends on how the save is handled post-login

Getting some real mixed feelings from Forever Skies. The premise is nice, even though I'm not a fan of "you're sick, go get a cure" thing as a plot device to build tension. Didn't like it in Subnautica, didn't like it in Cyberpunk. It already is a life or death situation, and it kind of takes away from the little comfyness you have left.
And somehow this just doesn't grab me. I'm a sucker for the very beginnings of survival games, where you take stock of your new surroundings and figure out how to meet your basic needs for just long enough to make some progress. The race against the clock while learning about water collection and purification was neat.
But I dunno man, the airship looks lame and I'm just not quite feeling it yet. Also apparently parts of the map are procedurally generated and I hate that shit.
>>529683870>>529686509Dunno man. I think a simple file in your install folder is enough. It signals that this the intended experience while not being too much effort and having no side effects like making the game unplayable, once you run out of money for the server unless that's part of your artistic intention, that the game is only playable for a limited amount of time
Everything beyond that is up to the player and their conscience. As I said, I respect that the Longing devs intended their game to be only played once, so I won't replay it even if I technically could. But just how an author can't force me to read their short story in one sitting or a movie director can't stop me from doing the laundry while watching their movie with split attention someone will inevitably find a way to play your game in an "unintended" way, and it's their loss.
>Subanutica 2 lead devs leave the company after the publisher puts some other dude in charge
well this doesn't sound good.
>>529691976>well this doesn't sound good.Depends, Subnautica 2 was not heading in a good direction. Who are the new guys?
>>529688909>The race against the clock while learning about water collection and purification was neat.>build water collector>craft water filter>wait for collector to fill>pick water>boil water>???>profitFood and water is so trivialized in that game that it is just a chore. Also depending on what part of the map I was I got huge lagspikes.
>>529692953Can't find the original source. Apparently it's the dude who was responsible for Callisto Protocol who's known for crunching his devs.
Tbh I was highly skeptical of how the game would turn out from the start
>>529693687Yeah I know. I was talking about finding how that works and which resources you need for it for the first time is always exciting.
I don't mind it these survival mechanics being a bit of a chore of you can streamline and automate them later to feel like progress.
But I don't know man, so far this game feels like a refund, unfortunately
>>529681602>Try some anti union onesOoooh, yes. You are a genius!
>>529688909Man, I just want a survival game to enjoy again, but you have to dig through so much garbage until you finally find one of the fun ones.
And honestly I can't even quite nail down what makes me like or dislike one of those games until I try it. I think a handcrafted map is a big draw for me. Exploration feels way shallower otherwise.
>can't put roof over wall, can only put it on floor
>don't have any floor tile, only foundations
>all my buildings are lacking roofs
This is pain.
>>529701401valheim has really good exploration with randomly generated maps
Can anyone explain this to me? I tried toggling it on and off and can't tell what it does. Is it purely cosmetic? It just flips the circles? What's the point of that? In what way could anyone care about that?
>>529704068I hate Valheim for that reason. For some reason, when I played, the bosses spawned everywhere but nearby.
Crossing through Mistlands (T5-land) to reach the Mountain boss (T4) was not fun.
>>529704394bosses spawn in multiple locations so you aren't required to go to one specific place if it's annoying to reach
>>529701542>toot incline with the boisfrench is fucking wild
why not toot decline with the gals
>>529704068>>529704394>>529704753Screw that shit. I use a Valheim world generator to either spoil me on the shape of the world I've made or just generate a world with reasonable boss locations or even just the starting land having decent amount of black forest.
Way too many times I've had randomly generated world with a mere sliver of black forest that can't even spawn graydwarves on exclusively meadow + mountain island. Fuck rafting to another shore for bronze.
The intern is taking a loooong break.
>>529704753No they don't? Or is it new? I remember when we went for mountain boss, we could only find ONE location for these.
>>529704946Toit, not toot.
>>529709537That man is dead.
Palworld is fun, but like Craftopia before it, it's feature creeps without a good plan.
One example is how to get rid of unwanted pals: the game tells you to capture five "lambs" for the tutorial, but you cannot really get rid of them until you unlock the butcher knife, at level 12 or so. Until them, they hog your facilities, and Palworld doesn't have any way to turn off a facility, so they just chill in the farm all day.
There's also the issue of sitting spots: it's never clear which way the stools and benches are facing, so...
Since I have a wood surplus, I made a bar. It serves absolutely no purpose since this is all cosmetics, but I like it.
And the problem is that since I can't put roofs, the sun just shines in, and as I said earlier, I have no idea how to tell which ways stools are facing, so most of them, once sitting on them, have the character sitting toward the south wall.
>>529704394>>529705247Speaking of Valheim, has it gotten better for single player?
I remember it being a huge slog, and unlike ARK it had no settings to adjust harvesting rates
>>529709537they always have
>>529709537Valheim laways had multiple boss spawn points.
The signpost runes, however the fuck you pronounce their name, only shows the CLOSEST one.
So you could find one sign post that shows one Elder spawner, then travel to other side of the world to find another sighpost and it could point to a different spawner.
>>529704068Valheim is sadism
>>529713487Nah that gotta be recent.
Finally figured out a way of doing it, and it's a big dumb. Basically, you build up triangle on the back to serve as foundations, then you remove them.
>>529713442It's an enormous grindfest
but you can now change resource multipliers and toggle portal limits
