This game is and will forever be a tech demo. Our events and open world segments are tests for features in other games.
I don't just blame HI3 for DMC: PoC becoming an APHO clone. I also blame it for Mihoyo owning the DMC franchise so much even DMC clones are more HI3 than DMC. FF16 plays like a rotation based gacha slasher like ZZZ or Honkai Impact 3 or PGR. Except in those games you also rotate between combos whereas in 16 you have just the one combo lmao. HI3 is so powerful that Square Enix ripped it off for a mainline FF game.

Weirdly, the other Hoyo games made me appreciate HI3 more because of stuff they lack which HI3 has.
Part 1 features a fair bit of disastrous characters chapter focused arc (Cyberangel and Dual ego don't save the shitshow that's the sea of quanta arc), and Arc City, the best arc of part 1 blend plot & character arc while keeping plot at the forefront. And good chapter with character work like Nagazora get ruined by the fact that they don't go anywhere plotwise with Mei doing fuckall at World serpent.
Part 2 main issue is trying to cram all the world building into the first 2 chapters, which Part 1 managed to avoid with a lot of supplementary materials and a shittons of retcons over those whenever they actually decided to address those points. Chapter 2 is already starting a shift back to character focus and chapter 3 is purely a songque chapter who weaves it with the plot, and it's a pretty great chapter.
