basically if you see something {{withNoSpacesAndWithinDoubleCurlyBrackets}} it's a macro that frontends, particularly SillyTavern, replace with certain values before sending it off as an API request
{{char}} is a macro tied to the character's name, so "{{char}} is Elizabeth" is redundant, it would resolve to "Elizabeth is Elizabeth". Not the end of the world in that case, but unnecessary.
Another macro of note is {{user}}, which is replaced with the currently selected persona's name.
Type /help macros into any ST chat to get a list of every macro and what it resolves to, if you're curious to see all the ones ST recognizes. {{char}} and {{user}} are universal, though, so they're the only ones you'd need to think about

There's no TLDR, but whatever you set the cache depth level to informs what must not change between messages. For example, if it's 4, the 4th most recent message, up to your initial system prompt, must not change. If it's good, as you swipe or send messages, you'll get cache hits and a request price reduction; if not, you get a cache miss and it'll write another cache, which can be costly if it needs to keep doing that.
Rules of thumb are: don't use world info (if you have to, move it to in-chat at a depth before the cache depth level, OR you can set the WI entries to constantly active so they don't deactivate and cause a cache miss) and remember that the cache expires after 5 minutes of inactivity. You might want to use https://github.com/OneinfinityN7/Cache-Refresh-SillyTavern for that last point.
Also, don't use caching on chats that have reached max context, either

One more thing to add if using OpenRouter, set Middle-Out Transform to Forbid (under Max Response Length). I think middle-out kicks in (removes middle context) around 50% of model context size so you probably won't notice anything if you're always under, but it's one thing that can possibly kill cache.
OR seemed to have fixed the explicit 5m TTL parameter issue on Vertex/Bedrock (1h only works on Anthropic; more specifically the other two don't actually support the explicit TTL parameter), but I notice a few misses on Vertex possibly because of Vertex Europe vs Global.

What kind of switching? If it's two Claude models, it'd basically be you juggling between them within the span of 5 minutes to avoid the cache being deleted. If it's one Claude and a non-Claude model, I guess it'd just be a case of making sure you go back to that Claude one to keep the cache warm
Or you could not do that. Switch a lot, I mean. Cache writing often probably won't hurt that much on the sonnets, but it's when you get to Opus that you should be more intentional with that.

If you ever reach a point where you don't know how to respond in your chat that just means whatever character you're playing isn't sufficiently defined. A good character should have a good response for any given situation.
