best ai senpai to write code for me while I consume pornography?
I think that I did not failed in my goal of finding alternatives to combat and violence.
There's actually a broad spectrum of alternatives in game design, and specially things like board games and card games.
There's more than kill or be killed victory conditions in games.
Like carry a token to another place, reach a place faster, control more territory, collect some special token or token combination, get the most points.
And there's also more ways to lose a game than being killed, like getting the less points in the end, being eliminated, being pushed outside the ring, not pressing enough buttons, a timer, etc.
I'm so glad these threads have healed
have they? still seem quite lacking in games

>>528855917Yes, enginedev is pointless, but only for general purpose engines. If you think you can spend time upfront on a general purpose engine and use it for all your later games then you might as well use Unreal or Unity.
"General Purpose" sucks dick, because it's mediocre at everything.
I just write my game in C, the engine and game is tightly coupled, i.e, the engine is designed to support a specific game. This drastically reduce development time, meanwhile increasing the overall quality of game.
Unreal/Unity sucks because they are trying to be a general purpose engine.

Day 26 on a Thread for Project C-Con โ "Be Just Or Be Dead" Edition
Journal logs are being posted into /agdg/ daily.
Mind the random Guilty Gear song plug in the thread tag, it's pretty good in my opinion. Anyways, horribly moody weather but great day, fought random guys I saw at a field and won by pin in a few seconds--training alongside game dev and waging has been going well. Might get a new job though. For Project C-Con today in specific we finished a little cube animation that taught us how keyframes work and how to easily use them, picrel is the small animation made in a few seconds tonight. That's it, goodnight Anon, see you daily.
What is Project C-Con?

I'm an artlet and plan to use preexisting CC0/CC-BY stuff, RPGs seem easy to do because enemies aren't necessarily animated.
The other game type that seemed easy to make is a platformer/action-adventure, but I'm not sure how to make enemies for that that feel "right".
>>528850323Well, do you want custom glyphs for Chinese logographs? If not, then donโt. Just use an existing font for Chinese.
Most text rendering libraries have some logic for falling back to other fonts if the main one does not have a glyph; and if you write your own text rendering (which obv. youโre gonna do, what good would a custom font be otherwise?) then you have complete freedom ofc.
>>528872813Well we all thought you meant parkour as popularized by the game BRINK (2011)
I am not sure, but Pyre (by Supergiant Games) may also have had real-time elements? Or was that speedball kinda game which makes for the combat in this title fully turn-based?
Also something like Cultist Simulator could be interesting, if card placement was made more tricky in some way, like, you golf/curl them to the desired destination and if you land a more precise shot the effect will be more powerful. (Obv. the "card" metaphor might have to be replaced with something else in such a design.)

i'm not a weeb but a japanophile. for me, it all depends on how waifuable a character is. just because she's anime doesn't mean she's waifuable. they spend alot of time and money into crafting waifuable characters, this is something a solo indie doesn't have. it's really obvious when a grifter is trying to use anime girls in order to increase sales because it lacks soul.

Anime is one of the hardest genres to find success is as an indie, because anime fans have taste and want things that are actually good. -Lower the texture resolution until sufficiently blocky using nearest neighbor filtering
Deluding yourself into thinking you'll make it works wonders for motivation and resilience but when it comes to actually releasing your game... yeah that's when it all crashes down.
>>528894501are you married?
>>528896864my advice is to gather quality photo references, so you're not clueless about how something looks.
as for practical advice, learn the rules of proportion, how to measure proportions in a reference.
It's also a good idea to draw using krita line and square tools over your reference to have an idea of how the edge flow should look like.
It's much easier to not guess and just copy your reference with a drawn wireframe.
As for those textures, you should look up a texturing tool like armor paint (It's free if you can compile it) and just take photo textures and use a tool to downscale them to psx resolutions, like 128x128 and use gif compression exporting settings.

>>528901812> There are many skills that have hard IQ requirements to learn at a higher, commercially competitive levelI don't understand the point of this comment, I'm not saying everyone can go out and be a nobel winning chemist or some shit. But in 2025 especially with the internet/youtube and shit it's literally like impossible to not learn new things, you have to actively be ignorant. For reference, I didn't even ice skate once in my entire life until I was 25 and did it on a date with a girl. After realizing I could stand on the ice and I was an adult with free will by the following week I had spent $500 on gear and signed up for the learn to play class. I still to this day improve and keep playing twice a week minimum. Even though I didn't start until my late 20s and I'm in my mid 30s I can outskate and stick handle ex high schoolers in my league. I'll never be as good as someone who started 20 years earlier than I ever could but there was nothing stopping me from learning at all.
I also bought a house at 25 and I've owned it for 10 years. I built an entire addition in my basement for it without ever framing or anything before but it wasn't difficult to learn and do myself. I've saved so much money in my life by just going and learning whatever I need to do and I'm not some "high IQ" genius lmao. I fix and repair my own car and motorcycle, I do all repairs in my home, and I didn't learn blender until I was probably almost 30 as well. I can't think of a single thing I can't do if I put my time into it.
>>528899171>because i don't really understand the appeal of these gamesI've got so many genres like this. Usually don't play too much small games so it's really hard to come up with good ideas for small games.

High IQ is only useful when you have the autism to hyperfixate on one thing and become the best at it. Gamedev is a combination of multiple things and one person simply cannot master them all so that sort of high iq behavior isn't really useful.
>>528903210Gamedev is a combination of talents. You can't compare it to ice skating like that. Being good at gamedev is more comparable to someone being extremely good at ice skating, singing, painting all while having a doctorate in mathematics.

>Gamedev is incredibly competitive...Even if you cope about how you're not in this for the money, whether you like it or not, you are competing for player attention, a competition that you will lose without a high degree of competency. This is dumb because attention has nothing to do with anything but luck after a certain point. Also doing gamedev for money is dumb anyways. You're better off learning how to be a programmer or artist and getting a nice stable career job than trying to "make it" with your unique game and that's just a fact. I know quite a few indie game devs who have had success with their own games in the past (late 90s/early 00s) and they all work for big companies now raking it easy cash with their knowledge because it's much better. They still make their own games but mostly because they want to in their free time. Personally I am making the game that doesn't exist I want to play. My job makes me more than enough money and lifestyle to live happily.

History has literally proven that. Regardless, most things necessary to learn for gamedev take about a year of focus to become better than like 70% of everyone else doing it lol. You can become a decent 2D artist in 6 months if you focus on it and take courses. I remember when I took a drawing course in college the very first day I remember all we did was learn and practice drawing straight lines. That always stuck with me because for all my prior years of art education that was never once a lesson until then. Before then it was about being creative (where a lot of the people here get stuck and don't move beyond like nortubel, galduen, etc.) once you start learning the methods like light, shadows, expression, etc. it all clicks and boom now you have something. I've had a kid from HS on my FB who one year went from never drawing to drawing comic book style characters because he hyper focused on it and took courses and learned how to draw for a year.
Same thing when I first started learning music theory in high school. One of the first lessons was ACEGBDF and saying ABCDEFGFEDCBA front and back memorized. Ever since then I can sit down at a piano and play chords and melodies. I had been playing guitar and bass for years at that point and then suddenly I could basically play or do anything and my fretboard unlocked for me.
Programming is basically the same way, but a harder point to reach at the beginning. You need to understand the syntax of the language and learn methods and eventually things just click and you understand the tools and why you would use one over another. TBC...

It's not some impossible task to do this and be good and efficient at each necessary skill. The problem most people have on agdg and in the world in general is they get too impatient and want everything immediately and just half ass learning. No one wants to be told they need to spend 3 years learning skills before they can begin doing what they want to do. They just want to go do it.
I don't understand the appeal of idle games, survivor likes, 4 player coop, cozy gaming, mobas and hero shooters. I'm just too old.

i say this humbly, i'm a flopdev, but if he could learn how to improve the presence of his games on the correct media platforms, i think he'll reliably make it
i'm a slopdev so i have no idea how to promote the types of artistic games he makes, but i think his best option would be to find successful examples of similar games, ans just do what they did to be promoted

>>528905236>If you are the kind of person that managed to spend all of 2015-2025 without utilizing any of those resource and learn any skills out of pure curiosity, then you don't have that willpower or spark in you to make yourself learn what it takes to make a game.I think it's possible they spent that time focused on something else that interested them. It's not like every gamedev knows at 10yo they want to make games and having the skillset and mindset that is able to put himself to work is extremely valuable and is one of the things required for success. Most people here don't have it which is why they keep failing. You know who you are. I'm sorry it's uncomfortable to hear but that's how it is.
>>528905265>>528905446>You don't need to be the master of everything to be a decent game dev thoughIndeed but mastering and being good enough are two different things. To talk about mastering ice skating and comparing it to gamedev as if it's something you can master alone is silly.

why wasn't I deving when I was young, I mean I was but I was only dabbling, no serious coding, no nothing

>>528904819No cope anon, I've been successful before (touring signed musician) and it's literally just who you know and luck after the initial talent. I've worked with plenty of people in multiple fields with talent far better than mine with no success.
>>528905236>No. This is absolute insane delusion. You literally can't. It's physically impossible. My hobby sport is tennis, and it's a running joke among tennis elites that more than half of adult male amateur tennis players think they can take a game off of a pro, and that is absolutely insane hubris. There is zero chance. The level is just too far apart. If you keep treating it at as a hobby yes it would be delusion. I'm literally talking about as if it suddenly became the only thing you focused on in your life 24/7. There's definitely levels to it though and some are easier than others (like golf). This of course isn't talking about a normal person either it is assumed you are athletic and hard working.
I'm just starting to realize how painfully generic my taste in video games is. The only games I want to make are hero shooter MOBAs, or third-person action adventure games. Imagine Smite or Dragon's Dogma. Those are the only two games I can compare my dream game to.

>4 player coopeven sort-of-shit games can be fun with friends, it really is the social part that makes it good
>cozy gamingI don't even know what this is
>mobas and hero shooterscompetitive format will always have appeal but the characters and their skills add a level of complexity that I believe appeals to the problem solving and 'git gud' part of gaming, the character you pick changes on how you play the game which provides depth and if you can learn to exploit that depth you'll stand above others in the game
>>528906787Early days of Unity are a bit tough, remember Chatgpt can help with some of that foundational knowledge, like passing data around, how to set various settings if needed. Takes away a lot of learning pains. But remember to to ask "what else should i know" or "when should I not do it this way" to get a wider response from chat.

>>528857025>I still don't get how going engineless "improves" development time. It's the problems you face toward the last 10% of development, like proper occlusion culling, shader compilation, and fixing collision bugs. Using a general-purpose engine, you ignore a lot of this at the start because they provide a checkbox for occlusion culling, a shader graph, and a collision system and can remain unaware of the abstraction, but once players start to complain about flickering objects, performance issues, and bugs, the abstraction 'leaks' and you have to learn the engine internals to fix it. If it can be fixed at all.
If you bake your own engine then those problems are much easier to solve because there's less abstractions, and those that do exist you created yourself.
A good video about these problems appearing in Unity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PpkAhVZMDc
>Shaders and materials not behaving consistently >Broken camera issues in a plugin that previously solved all his issues>Corrupted files breaking his map>Level building tools which work until they break or lack critical features>Unexplainable input bugs>meanwhile Unity marks most issues as 'fixed' or ignores them outright.A lot more people should follow Balatro's example and use a game framework instead.
>>528908547Or, you just never fix them, because your game is already shipped and players will still buy it.
>>528908186i can skip the babyshit ive already been posting here for years absorbing good game design practices and i'm a webdev by trade

Why some people think getting a job is below them? You can always dev after work right?
>>528908767Right, and there's definitely merit in getting 'on base' with something like a Miziziziziz or Danni game instead of constantly doing engineDev. I have a theory that most people who develop their own engines aren't really aspiring game developers, but are actually are tool developers who should really find a team that they can support instead.
However, enginedev doesn't need to be a grind. Most people think you have to learn OpenGL and roll your own graphics pipeline, which is an illusion. It's perfectly fine to delegate stuff like that to a dedicated framework that you do all your scripting on top of like with PyGame(Python) or Love2D(Lua) which both exist on top of SDL I believe.
Most of what you buy with Unreal, Godot, Unity, aside from their graphics pipelines, are editors with a class system. Once you realize this, it becomes very easy to create your own editor and your own method of organization, so you're thinking in the problem domain with minimal abstraction, not how you'd do something with blueprints, components, or node trees, but the actual problem itself. And because what you write isn't written in an engine it's way more portable, so you accumulate more tools over time that you've written that won't be deprecated by engine updates.
Godot is the least bad general-purpose engine because it causes developers to realize that a scripting language on top of a framework is fine and editor tooling isn't so hard to make.
