Twitter and reddit are just the worst places to house a community. They form echo chambers and reward hot takes and engagement bait. Perfect for an endless outrage factory.
>3) Incompetent leadership
Any time the “leaders” of this community are forced to make a decision, it turns into a disaster. The Hax debacle speaks for itself. Just terrible communication and transparency from the TOs. But this can also be seen with the controller discourse. It takes years for decisions about rules to be made and often we end up with shitty half-measures. Basically, any time TOs have to make a decision, it gets dragged out over years and turns into yet another endless social media drama shitshow. For player discipline cases, there exists no clear criteria for rules violations or punishments. The leaders are simply not qualified to handle the responsibility they have assigned to themselves, often leading to confusion and a divide in the community.

And when I look at HDR, yeah, more characters have more combo options and combos last longer, but I still see some of the same combos replicated in vanilla SSBU. So HDR homogenizes the gameplay more while SSBU, a number of characters don't have long combos and have to play more strategic since they have more neutral interactions to win which leads to a greater diversity of playstyles.

Melee and even just competitive Smash is a bubble and many people foolishly believe there is a potential demographic to get from comp Smash
The highest viewed tournament set has 3.8 million views. That's 11% of Smash Ultimate's sales, and that's taking the most generous quantifiable means of measuring a potential demographic there is.
Unless your game costs so little that you make a return on investment with a budget below a million (which pays what, a year of salary for a very small team tasked for programming/art/music and sound design/netcode?), it's literally worthless.
The driving force of Smash, its characters, simply isn't there too. At most you're gonna attract a subset of that demographic by asking for a partnership with a indie dev you can reach, like idk, Peppino, Shovel Knight, UT/DR characters, Touhou shit and so on, but it's scraps.
Smashfags at large are like crack addicts, they want crack or something stronger. A new honeymoon period where them and their peers can enjoy the game without being jaded, or the satisfaction of discovering shit/being clueless and excited. An indie dev can never deliver that, only a mildly amusing distraction that a few thousands at the very most will commt to.

I tried Slippi for the first time(and thus melee for the first time since 2010), and despite everywhere I'd seen it discussed being full of complaints about BM and poor sportsmanship, no one quit out on me, and one guy even stuck around for two games practicing crouching canceling (?) my moves while also deliberately playing at a level I could react to him some of the time. Like he killed me twice real quick, realized I was a noob, and spent seven minutes of his own time being a live opponent for me to familiarize myself with the gameplay against.

Absolutely going to need a proper controller for this though. Dolphin doesn't have a way to recognize steam controller inputs properly, and my Xbone just doesn't feel right. I don't remember struggling to shorthop as a kid...

But this can also be seen with the controller discourse. It takes years for decisions about rules to be made and often we end up with shitty half-measures. Basically, any time TOs have to make a decision, it gets dragged out over years and turns into yet another endless social media drama shitshow. For player discipline cases, there exists no clear criteria for rules violations or punishments. The leaders are simply not qualified to handle the responsibility they have assigned to themselves, often leading to confusion and a divide in the community.

Melee still has all of those things, and Melee was chasing dollars since the beginning. Melee has always been hamstrung by Nintendo, not lack of appeal(all the five gods had serious sponsorships, the OGs played in MLG tournaments...).

Melee has been in the mainstream since the beginning. The relative decline of banter has more to do with the changing social mores in society at large than it does with any sort of conscious decision by any Melee community. I went to a couple locals in my city nd the crowd is just a different set of people. The core community has shifted values as the player base has gradually moved towards late millenials and early zoomers. Ken is 39. Moky is 26... If anything, the biggest driver of change besides the actual people being replaced with new ones is that most of the pros stream on Twitch and they have to abide by the Twitch TOS to keep their income; that probably has more to do with the scenes changing character than melee as a whole trying to commercialize.

This is also ignoring the part where talking about Melee as a whole as a community is dumb and wrong, but that's a typical tourist take. My nearest local is gay because it's run by students at the local university, which means that the rules reflect what university students believe or have to pretend to believe today. I tried Slippi for the first time(and thus melee for the first time since 2010), and despite everywhere I'd seen it discussed being full of complaints about BM and poor sportsmanship, no one quit out on me, and one guy even stuck around for two games practicing crouching canceling (?) my moves while also deliberately playing at a level I could react to him some of the time. Like he killed me twice real quick, realized I was a noob, and spent seven minutes of his own time being a live opponent for me to familiarize myself with the gameplay against.

Absolutely going to need a proper controller for this though. Dolphin doesn't have a way to recognize steam controller inputs properly, and my Xbone just doesn't feel right. I don't remember struggling to shorthop as a kid...

I really like Toon Link, but I just don't get the character. I'm pretty good with the other 2 Links. Link hits like a truck and has great combos and one-offs, pretty great reach too, bomb is absolutely great. Young is faster, but still hits hard, not as much reach, but still has great combos, the arrows are very fucking good.

Toon link is... None of that, and sure, I get they want to differentiate the characters, but there's really nothing going on for him. His reach sucks, and he lacks the power of the other Links, and I have a lot of hard times smashing people out, despite him being fast, doesn't matter that much when they have to be at 100+ percentage to take them out, barely, and the reach only makes it worse. I can juggle more with him, sure, but, again, doesn't matter that much when I can take them out off the juggle. The bombs sucks, the boomerang sucks, and the arrows have to be the worse part.

How the fuck do I use him? His only good thing is the down stab, but that also usually means that if your opponent dodges, you are absolutely fucked.

Is Melee really going to get more fun as I improve? Win or lose I'm so uninterested whenever I play, it's not exciting at all. Everyone says the game gets way better as you improve but I don't know how much more I have left in me. Downtilt is good against Luigi. You'll have to practice shorthopping, and you'll want to wall him out with shorthop nair. You'll have to learn to edgeguard him, if you can't edgeguard him, it's easier for him to combo you than you to combo him.

Juggling Luigi is good. He has really low air speed. His downair is big and disjointed and he can challenge your upair or uptilt if you're infront and below him (with perfect timing, your uair beats his dair, but timing is hard and he gets to select his fastfall timing, and it's very easy to trade, and if it trades, he probably reversals), so when you juggle him, you want to stay behind him.

So in summary:
on ground, wall with downtilt and short hop nair. Kill him offstage (kinda hard if they're good at recovery). Get him above you, and juggle him by staying behind him.
