I think one of the biggest realizations that will help beginner dev is that there really isn't a "right" way to do anything. Just start making it in the way that makes sense to you. If you totally fuck it up, you can always refactor later. Just making it sloppily is much better than sticking your thumb up your ass and letting days pass as you ponder the correct perfect way to make it.

Thoughts on this blorb model? My new workflow is baking vertex painting from a HDRI and then manually editing it a bit.

How do I bake the current render view? Once I've baked in the vertex paint and everything, and THEN put it with a different HDRI, it looks the way I want. But if I bake it again it doesn't look the same as in the render. I'm probably misunderstanding something fundamentally.

Now lets see an actual full sized game that looks like this running in godot, you can plop down HQ assets into any engine and throw some fog on top to get a pretty render, making it function as a game is something else entirely.

Godot's main failing is that scenes can't be baked into more primitive data that the servers directly work with, every piece of information has to be managed by of nodes on top of nodes on top nodes and you very quickly hit a size limit on how big your scenes can be because they bloat the fuck out of the scene tree.

The only thing Godot is missing is an asset store full of assets that "just werks". Unity and Unreal games look better on average because any kid with mom's credit card can get decently looking assets into the engine moving around, whereas Godaughters are forced to fight with imports. Godot also starts with all postprocessing turned off by default, as opposed to Unreal which turns on all bloat by default. Most retards aren't even aware of where the menu for those options are in either engine.

I haven't been convinced by enough competent looking 3D games coming out of Godot. That planet artillery game is a really good example though, if more projects start coming out like that I'd begin to trust Godot a lot more. Right now I can just recommend Unity or Unreal with 100% assurance that a dev can make literally whatever they want to the highest possible quality level and get it shipped. Godot hasn't fully crossed the line yet, it's only very experienced devs that have switched over that have managed to do anything decent. And that number is still very small.

Opinions vary! Some won't buy a game with only half the levels, even if the last one of the current batch is pretty replayable. I would guess you can do that after a year of practice? I dunno. Start with a humanoid base mesh, don't fall for the sculpting meme.

The problem is once you've sweated blood modelling, uv unwrapping and texturing, you have to repeat at least the texturing to create other armies, ranks, roles etc.

You then have to rig and and animate it all yourself because as nice as Mixamo is it doesn't have 18th century muzzle loading musket line formation infantryman animation sets. And that's a completely different skillet to the one you just spent a year practicing
